Follow up and picture archive to post #338.
It is a 576 Custom Two-Tone of 525 light yellow primary and a 504 Medium Olive roof.
The base mirrors hown are correct for the truck per the SPID. Unlike the bundled Promo Package Highlanders, trim upgrade trucks like this left the mirrors and all other model options free choice.

Lets find this a home guys! Its a keeper.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Thanks to the efforts of Bruceman1968 we have a good idea of what it looked like new with P01 wheelcovers and PU8 whitewall tires.

BTW the U69 AM/FM is not original to the truck, still a nice upgrade.

Tim, do you know when the Promo Packages first started being offered for the 1972 model year trucks?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

That is a good question and one I hope to eventually nail down. But here is a tidbit.
Shown is a mailer dated May 72

--"NEW CHEVY
HIGHANDER
----_SPECIAL.
PRICED
-$260.50 LESS*."

Inside it announced

------"NOW YOU CAN
----------COMBINE
HIGHLANDER LUXURY
-----WITH POPULAR
--FACTORY OPTIONS
------------PRICED
-----$260.50 LESS*."

The back cover also noted
"Your Chevy Dealer is in a national sales contest and he is anxious to give you a great truck deal RIGHT NOW!"

So take away from that what you will but it sure sounds close to if not an inital national release. Plus it also again confirms the Highander was a seperate trim upgrade option that the Promo Package trucks included and were based upon.

Might just have to do a Promo (YG6-8) build date survey thread.

I could take a look at the truck for someone on here if they are serious about it.

Great idea Tim. Do you know if the broadcast sheet have the actual date the truck was built listed on it? My non-promo Highlander was delivered July 5th, 1972 and looking at the way it is optioned I am pretty certain it was ordered specifically by the original owner. As of yet I haven't looked for the broadcast sheet in my truck.

The build/broadcast sheets have the SCHEDULED build date in the upper left corner, box 10 (see the 12/71 below).

The only true and closest date of build documentation is the Protect-O-Plate as I have posted before. It has the full and only engine assembly code correct for a specific vehicle.
The build month is also keyed as well confirming vehicle assembly month.

Plus,
Your engine block (if original) should be very close to the actual vehicle build date. The engine assembly code date is what you would want to see. Its stamped into the block, forward of the right head looking down. THis will match the POP on an original build truck.

Also,
The driver's blue door certification sticker has the build month in the upper right corner. It will match the POP build month.

Finding a build/broadcast sheet in a truck other than a "Z" Fremont build is very unlikely. When you do find one look closely to make sure it isn't another truck's.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Speaking of Longhorn Custom Camper Highlanders - this is truly THE "one that got away"... I went to see it in Scottsdale when I lived in Mesa - I'm embarrassed to admit how low the guy came down on the price to sell this and I still didn't bite. I had just sunk an arm and a leg into my white 72, so couldn't justify buying this, even though it was also a big block with tool box and YG8. I called him back a year later (just like I did on the one I currently have) and never got a reply. It was TRULY a great truck and it was for sale for $4500. Yes, that's what I said, $4500... I've never forgiven myself. I even already had a set of steelies to go in it with the PO3s... Ugh.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I've never faked anything in my life (other than an orgasm) ( ) but I am going to check on getting yellow plaid for my ochre truck. My dad had the black vinyl seat redone in 1990 and it's so full of cushion that my thighs rub the steering wheel. When I get that fixed I am going to try and go with the yellow/black plaid and white (parchment) vinyl seats I see on here.

Since my dad made his own bed out of 1/8 steel my truck will never be original so I might as well make it look a bit nicer.

SS Tim, Could you give your opinion if this is a Highlander? It has an order number so I am thinking that is what the customer wanted. Going to pick it up tomorrow.

It sure is!
Nice SPID with good basic options that compares very favorably with another (124 units higher and a 618 Highlander) built there at Flint.
Notably your truck also has both the chromed front and rear bumpers that are so often added on.
Lower bodyside molding and full wheel covers round out the exterior.

618 Orange Plaid is of course what makes it a Highlander, an upgrade for the Z62 Custom Deluxe trim option.

We of course expect more pictures very soon and right here is a good place to start. Hope all goes well tomorrow!
