Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
My nephew is helping me stuff my engine in the Satellite Saturday. I finished up the mods to the oil pan today and the new engine mounts came in this afternoon. Sunday I'm going to try and work on the truck. If I need a bathroom I will have to use the out house. You know the back yard. Ha Ha Ha. The adjuster was out looking at the damage yesterday. hopefully they will start fixing the damage next week. I might have line on the marble I installed back in 2008 keeping my finger crossed.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Managed to get the engine install in my Satellite on Saturday along with some complications the fuel tank did not come with gaskets the flex plate TCI sold me was universal one they said would fit and hit the starter motor had to fix it. broke the reverse switch when stuffing the engine and trans at the same time. Forgot to remove a bracket on the old trans. Next week end should be able to finish it up. Finally got some work done today on my truck and installed the rear end. Now that the rear end is out of the garage I can start working on the D60 front replacing bearings and seals.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
look at what I found in my side yard today left rear 1972 door panel. I knew I had one and it is very clean, now I have 2.
Hi Scott The Dirty Dingo mount was the only one I found when searching at the time that fit 4X4 and it looked good not realizing it sets the engine lower than 2 wheel truck frame by 1.5" and making headers an issue. |

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
That is the reason I asked about them. Pacific fabrication is in gilroy but haven't heard much about them from actual users I have asked to see the benefits or problems with each. Not much response. What is the reason for the movement or location change?

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Are you asking about the 1.5" difference in-between the 4X4 mount and the 2 wheel drive mount. I think it's how Dirty Dingo built the mount. I did move my engine forward about 1" to clear the coil pack on the right side.

The comment you made about moving the engine forward after using the DD mounts to clear the coils is what I am talking about. I didn't want to order one over the other without hearing from someone that used either one of them. Thanks Scott

The problem I noticed is the headers that are offered are built for 2 wheel drive 67 to 72 truck. The cross member in 2 wheel drive holds the engine up about 1.5" higher than the LS engine mounts that are being offered for 4X4 frames. I do have a set of block huger headers from Headman that do fit. I'm going to see what I can do the modify the Doug Thorley headers. I know the right side hits the frame. left I think will fit with the NV4500 trans do to the slave cylinder being on the right under the starter motor. |

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I tried painting my origional green set using the adheasion coat and plastic paint but the paint is already rubbing off in places. I have 2 black sets waiting in the wings.
I like the statement "my side of the yard" pretty much what my wife and i hsve worked out. Kinda odd seeing a rear one with no holes for the arm rest or open lever.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Is there a reason why the motors are so much lower on a 4x4 than a 2wd?
Sorry to ask this on your build tread.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
The cross member on 2 wheel drive supports the front suspension and A arms. it is much larger than the cross member in a 4X4 frame only holding the engine.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Saturday my nephew Travis help me clean up and I finally got my garage cleaned out and moved things around so I can get the frame in the garage when I'm not working on it after the D60 is back together. Sunday I fixed my kitchen table and took the D60 apart. found broken spindle nut so I will order new on. Every thing else looked good. The lower king pins took some beating with a hammer and chisel to get them off. Started cleaning up some part and painting. All in all good week end.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Got some more work done on the d60 axle today. The break pistons and calipers were very dirty in side so I took them apart and cleaned them up. I used my air compressor to remove the pistons and the first one almost took my head off when it shot out of the caliper and went flying across the garage. The 2nd one I turned it over to push it out with air on the bench and it was a lot safer. Got the axle housing painted too. should be able to start putting it back together end of next week. I had to ordered 2 new spindles both of them looked like metal chunks were galling up the bearing and seal surfaces.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Ryan that picture is just the base coat I clear coated it Sunday. Hay swamp rat its been a while from your last post. you busy doing other things. I have been working grave yard for the last month so I get up early and work on the truck for couple hours about 3 days a week. I get most truck stuff done on the week ends. 4 Wheel parts called me today and they don't have the spindles and can't get them for about a month. I call my friend Pat to see if he can find a couple by the end of the week. Today I installed the ARP studs in the stearing knuckles and removed the seals and races from the hubs today. Only problem the hubs don't fit in my blasting cabinet. Going to see about getting gravity blasting gun at harbor Freight tomorrow so I don't have to fire up the big blasting pot.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I ordered the spindles from ORD this afternoon. Should have them by Thursday. I almost forgot I bought a gravity spray gun from Harbor Freight about 2 months ago and used it to spray the D60 this week end and it work good. I don't think I would use it to spray body panels as the spray pattern is a heavy top and bottom. All in all not bad for inexpensive spray gun for spraying parts.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I used that gun to spray my home theater screen paint and it worked very well. For $15 or so you can't beat the quality, however i'd also be hesitant on spraying panels.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
What type of rear spring hangers are you using? Do they drop lower? Is this the reason you don't need the 4" block?
PS your project looks awesome! |
