thanks for the kudos guys
fiberglass is fun, cheap and fairly basic once you figure out how to form it. i need to photoshop a brake pedal in that pic. every time i post it some wise guy comments on it dransport, that WAS my feeble attempt at a thread rebuild. 6 yrs of build pics and comments in that thread did you ever do do anything with you new fg skills?

Yeah, my back panel is done, the console and dash skirts are half done and the speaker pods are started. Unfortunately, the wife has me building a new deck and she wants the house trim painted, etc. No work on the truck this year so far, but I'm hoping to start up again late June.

Hey ogre, know its been awhile since the thread has been posted in but im the one that had the questions.
When your making things such as the radiator cover, wiper cowl, steering column cover, etc. Are you just shaping it out with cardboard, then taping the cardboard into place, then fiberglassing over the cardboard, and once dried, peeling it apart from the fiberglass and strengthening it? Im sure not sure on how to get some certain shapes that your making, such as the steering column cover, how its so round and everything. Im really interested in glassing and pretty disappointed i never got to check out the fiberglass forum, so let me know if its anything you could help explain. |

i wish the link for fiberglassforums.com still worked, i had detailed pics of the forms i used in my interior build thread.
i used a mixture of cardboard, plywood, plastic, mdf frames, staples, hot glue, fabric, masking tape and paste wax to make each form. nothing is molded in the sense of making a mold, fiberglassing and popping the finished product out of a mold. many of the forms are left in place, some are removed if it's possible and some forms are partially removed. the radiator cover is mostly cardboard and masking tape first i taped cardboard on the radiator to give some space to keep heat off and allow for air circulation then i formed up the shape i wanted with more cardboard once i get the shape i wanted, i covered everything in masking tape and waxed the surface with paste wax. you can see the angle brackets that bolt to the upper radiator bolts here. fg makes a mess. cover everything in news paper and start glassing this is the rough form glassed with paper removed then i pulled the form off and added more glass to the underside since i waxed the tape over the cardboard form, all of the form came out of this piece. i had to use wax and grease remover and then rough up the inside with 36 grit to apply more glass. after some reshaping i started finishing it. basic body work. filler and block sanding fiberglass is full of pin holes, everything needs to be covered in filler. the filler needs to be primed enough to hide all the pin holes and blemishes. then add some paint.

the steering column cover is made out of cardboard mailing tube, plywood and a mdf piece i made to go finish fit the steering column.
the dark areas are cardboard mailing tube, i pie cut the tube to make the curve to follow the dash. hot glue, staples and super glue temporarily hold everything together until you glass it. then glassed over everything, i glassed most parts in place so that they held their form. you can see tape over my finished dash, i waxed the dash but not wax anything on the form as i wanted the glass to hold to that part. there are hidden bolts embedded in the wood to fasten everything in place once your done. most of the form is still in place on this piece, i pulled out some cardboard, but most of the wood is still there. here you can see some of the brackets i welded to the dash to hold everything in place this is the finished shape painted. it changed shape a couple times to cover the hi beam switch and neutral safety switch and associated wires.

this is the right side of the dash fascia.
made of a piece of plywood with fasteners in it and then cardboard mailing tube for the curved portions. i did not wax anything here, most of the form is still in place. cardboard impregnated with resin is pretty much permanent and structural again, i built and glassed this in place, bolted to the dash so it would hold it's shape. waxed tape protected the finished dash.

part of the challenge of doing any fiberglass work is securing it in place and making it removable.
some of my fasteners are obvious and in sight, most are hidden built into the item being fiberglassed. but all the parts have to be able to unbolt for working on stuff under the dash. most of my parts have captive bolts glassed in, so that a couple of nuts are all that is required to secure them in place. there are 2 exposed fasteners in my whole dash/console, 2 big bolts into the steering column. i figured out later they were not required due to all the other fasteners i had in the column cover. i used a lot of T-nuts and bolts for the console and armrest.

i hope i answered all your questions.
if not ask here and i'll do my best to answer. fiberglassing can be a little intimidating when you start out. use mdf frames for openings like the radio, ac vents, speakers and end pieces. free form shapes require a little thought and a glance around the shop to see what is on hand once you figure out that any shape can be made and glassed, the world is your oyster...

i cut curved 2x4s to match the shape of my trunk and attached plywood to it
i taped foil on the plywood. bad idea, i should have primed the plywood and then waxed it to release the fiberglass. the foil made the glass wavy, i've used foil before on smaller parts with good results. this took a lot of work to get it smooth after rough cutting the shape, i added ribs for comfort... i meant for strength added glass on top of the ribs to make them homogeneous and added steel plates to attach the hinges body finished the top, 5 coats of primer, endless hrs of block sanding and add paint
