Re: Senior Project Build

Yep LKQ rocks. I will be calling them soon to source a starter and alternator and whatever pulleys I need. Anyone know how to create a front drive setup that just has an alternator, water, and steering pump?

Lucky...As much as ive read over your build I think im on board for the carbed ls series motor myself..Ive been reading up on it and its so much more simple then I ever knew..We actually used to build the stock intake setup at boush for ls2-ls7 and it s what always made me second guess messing with these newer ls series..but now that ive sone the research on it all Im in complete aw at how much sence it makes...the hp/torque specs are extreme and I really like the idea of just pluging up the msd 6L and hitting the road....So in on board myself and im suscribed

Re: Senior Project Build

Got the motor out of the *gasp* ford and into the garage.

And started pulling things apart....

Dirty! I found out that the stock intake mani weighs 20 lbs. and the new GMPP aluminum one weighs 10. Throw a big Holley on there and it should be closer to 20-25

Now come the craigslist ads to sell all the stuff I won't use.... if you are interested in any of the stuff I have for sale just LMK

Truck ex. mani.- $70
Truck intake- $80
317 Alum. heads- $150
Just to name a few

What color are you gonna paint it? Cat yellow or Cummins red would be sweet!

Paint the motor? Planning on a clean silver/aluminum and black engine bay.

Aw, but everyone has one painted silver. Dont you want it to be unique?

No, everyone has a red (Chevy orange) motor or a black motor. All silver painted is much less seen.

Re: Senior Project Build

So you got an LQ9, not an LQ4?

Honestly, the tops are probably worth about $100 complete maybe $150. They are plentiful.

Heads are the 317 aluminum series. Why sell them? Same on LQ4 & LQ9 engines. LQ9 is higher compression with better rods, 345 HP stock. LQ4 has dished pistons, 300 HP.

Carb'd setup with cam should be a solid 400HP motor.

Re: Senior Project Build

I wouldn't paint it anything other than the factory color unless it was a charcoal or medium grey. I am sick to death of seeing Chevy Orange, Red and Blue motors!

Re: Senior Project Build

I am getting rid of the 317's and going with a set of L92's. They are some crazy cool stock heads, and I should be able to push more than 400 horse with them. Now you say I have an LQ9, is that because of the vehicle it was in?

Oh and it will be silver, there is a good reason why people don't like yellow/blue/red/orange, it *usually* looks bad. None of those colors would go well with my truck, unless I could exactly match the red to the rest of the paint. A silver and black engine bay will look very classy

Re: Senior Project Build

If it's out of a '02 Yukon then it's an LQ4. Some LQ4's were rated at 325hp (like my old '01 Sierra C3). With L92 heads, MSD ignition, and a good carb setup you should be getting around 400hp...add a bigger cam and you should be over that.

Re: Senior Project Build

I pulled the heads today.... are my pistons/cylinders supposed to have this layer of filth on them? Got some action pics of me doing some work to prove to my teachers that I actually did it haha.

Re: Senior Project Build

lots of carbon build up...thats all. Use your shop vac and vaccum that stuff out of the cylinders as best you can, then maybe blow the remainder out...unless someone else has a better idea?

look at those heads though....the top of the heads and the springs are nice and clean...and sludge free.

Re: Senior Project Build

Cool score man. I just nabbed me a Cummins today, so I am fixing to be neck deep in a swap too.

I like the direction you are going with the truck, it seems to me for your age you have your poop in a group.

You know when I was in high school back in the *gasp* 90's I would have killed to get a LS1 in my truck. You are awful damn lucky. I think this truck is going to wind up being Sick.

One piece of advice though, never sell it, Id give about anything to have my old truck back. I miss it like crazy.

As far as the fan goes, I am not sure on a LS1, but many in that era had just a nut that was threaded the opposite rotation of the fan, just have to follow the belt path and find out which direction it spins, and the fan will probably spin off the opposite.
