good quality chrome work uses copper then nickel and then chrome.

are you going to prime it to fill in the pits before you paint it ..

Looking good buddy! Reminds me of my old setup. 57 bel air hood ornament with turn signal tail fins on the sides. Sticking with that setup when my truck is done for sure. lol

Thanks tj, that looks good on your truck. The signal lights look just like the originals on my dads satellite

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Loving this thread man, excellent work so far. My truck finally has the cab off and a friend is helping with the body work as I am not overly skilled with a welder. But I know what you mean with finding rust everywhere. That is what happened with mine and I basically have an all new floor now when it will be done.

Love the hood ornament Nik. It will make a nice custom touch.

Thanks Dale.

Even though I already painted the shifter I decided to go a different direction, a piston shifter. I got a lawnmower engine for free but it had some bad knocking in the bottom end when I fired it up plus it burned blue. So I pulled the piston and rod then cleaned it up. Then I put a little spring behind the wrist pin to increase the tension so it won't wobble around when driving

Thanks, the one thing I need to figure out is how I'm going to mount the rod to the pre existing shifter

Crappy drawing, but remove the one bolt for the bearing sleevd and make a same size threaded end on your shifter rod.

Hope that makes sense

I ended up getting rid of the bearing cap and making a piece to bolt on

Once it was bolted in place I then made little side covers out of plastic with a vinyl look to pretty things up and give it a cleaner look

And here's a pic of it all finished up and installed. Now all I need to do is find a way to put the shift pattern on the top of the piston

Thanks bill, that is an idea but If someone else drives my truck I don't want them accidentally putting it in reverse when going down the highway lol.

You could probably have a sign (or wrap) shop create some kind of sticker for it.

or

http://www.ebay.com/bhp/shift-pattern-decal

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

huge thanks to very nice guy! Member bfoley was kind enough to offer and give me some old school cool era correct gauges for my truck. What I received was two autometer gages, a oil pressure and water temp that have a vintage look to them. And two super cool Stewart Warner gauges, a vaccum gauge and an ammeter. He also threw in a couple of sweet toggle switches. Thanks again Ben.
