Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
i sure hope you'll be nice to that beautiful green and polished aluminum motor you're working on... it looked to me like you thrashed your other motor builds until parts were sticking out all over the place.
be nice to this one, its too pretty to blowup. closing in on break in time... |

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I haven't heard of using the razor blade on primer and paint. I have heard about using it on clear though. Not saying it wouldn't work, not to mention primer isn't that hard to sand. Just don't sand THAT part alone as you'll put a dip in the primer that you'll see later. (I don't know what you know and don't know when it comes to painting) Sorry if that sounded a$$ish

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I found it on different sites using it on solid color and clear. The reason I wanted to try it is so I don't sand down to the primer. If I can just knock down the runs and then scuff the white then I will just reshoot it without having to primer again.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I stopped by the garage on the way home from work to see how the paint dried. I was very disgusted/disappointed/depressed over how it came out when I left Sunday. Well seeing it today dried I feel much better. The sections where the paint came out smooth have an awesome satin eggshell sheen. The front pillars and inside the door jams look great and the front eyebrow.
The back does have a million drips I will have to cut and respray. The top I am torn on. It is very smooth around the edges but out in the center it has bad orange peel. Too bad its the Satin paint if it was gloss I am sure I could cut it and buff it out. Not sure yet if I will respray it. I have enough paint left to spray the back so I will focus on that first. Just hate having to do things twice after all that prep work, but that's what comes from being a rookie painter.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
i hear ya bro... don't get down on yourself. theres just a ton of things that can go wrong in paint work. even the most experienced painter can get major mishaps. and doing stuff twice, i guess its part of the deal. a good way to look at it is... its only time, not thousands of dollars you'd be spending to have someone else do it for you. and the DIY pride when finished will be huge.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I sanded all the runs out on the back of the cab. Today was a beautiful 72*. Perfect day for painting. Masked off the back on the side of the sail panels and shot some paint on. It came out great this time. 2nd times the charm.
I am very impressed with the fine line tape I bought. I only had one little place on the front driver A pillar mess up. 20150129_131853 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_131858 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_131904 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_131912 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_132035 by bjohnson388, on Flickr This paint has a very unigue texture when it dries. At first I thought the roof had orange peeled. But I think it is just the way the paint dries. A very cool Egg shell satin. 20150129_132105 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_132117 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_132215 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_131936 by bjohnson388, on Flickr 20150129_131800 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Need to get the bodywork finished on the bottom half and order some Blue paint. I think by the time I get through painting the whole truck I will have this painting thing figured out. Maybe!

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Nice! I got the same way when I painted. I feel like I need to hurry before the paint dries in the gun or something. I know it won't but like you said just work on the technique. Keep up the progress. Looks great. Best of all your learning from the mistakes. There are a lot of people that don't have the ability to. They put the blame on other things.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Thanks Clem. I appreciate the support you gave in an earlier post. It helps keep me motivated by the tremendous support on this forum. I would really like to come to your event in October with Rian and Martin but I don't think I will be able to make it this year. Hopefully when my truck is done maybe I can make it.

Thanks TJ. Still waiting to see your 292 come together. I forgot to post it but I found a picture on facebook of a guy that put a 6-71 blower on his inline six. Was going to post it in your thread but can't find it now. Not sure what kind of an intake he was using it. At first I thought it was yours because it looked almost identical and then I saw the timing chain cover and it didn't have the detail you put on yours.

Nice save on the paint, had to do mine a couple times too. I think our trucks look great with a white top and that satin looks classy
