Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
I think it's a 250. But what do I know?! Wish we could see the pass. side of it better. If it's a 230 you could still use it, but I don't know much about that engine.

Re : Buying A Straight Six
I can tell you it has the Rochester Series ' B' carby and those were used from 1963 ~ 1968 on the thinwall L6's .
Can you rustle up a compression tester & test it there ? . it's simple , easy & cheap and will prevent you from buying junk . -Nate Quote:

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
a good 230 is still a nice engine.... if its good deal I would go for it.... if I was buying one for an honest price i would look 250 for the other 20 ci... Just my opinion...

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
If you can get the "dress numbers" off the machined pad just behind the distributor hole, you can run the numbers online and find out the displacement if it's a 230 or a 250. 292s are more obvious to the educated eye: Asymmetrical motor mounts (pass side mount and fuel pump are in the opposite places), Taller deck, Taller --6" lifter panel covers on the 292, 4" on the 250, Extra hoses coming out of the water pump.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
I asked him if he could send me the casting numbers but he is laggin it after a week. I found a 1967 chevy truck 250 still sitting on the frame that the guy will start up for me. If it is good I will be buyin it for my 67 c10. I hope it works cause I do not have a motor in my truck anymore. Looks like a 4x4 now haha I WISH

Re : MY Straight Six Pics!
From my 1976GMC C2500 .
Pics 1 & 2 are from the day I bought it , note the old T-Shirt stuffed in the oil filler hole . Pic # 3 is the original exhaust manifold , this is why you don't stupidly keep driving it when it has exhaust leaks ! .

Re : MORE 292 Pix
Here we have the engine ready for cleanup , the original intake manifold cleaned & re painted and the various accessory brackets all painted and ready to go back on .
I wish I could figure out how to put text between each picture ! .

Re : 292 Pics Fin
Pic # 1 : various rubber grommets sourced from local FLAPS , Pep Boys , Kreagen , Shucks Ect. , just take your old crumbly ones and match 'em up in the " HELP ! " aisle ~ Dorman Products makes tons of good stuff and new grommets staunch those pesky oil leaks .
New radiator hoses too . Last pic : ready to re assemble . I paid $700 for this truck (no rust) and dumped $3,700.00 worth of parts into it and felt lucky to get $600 back out after it did the one long distance hauling job I bought it for , admirably .

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
I know ! they're coming (so is Christmas yadda yadda) , please bear with me ~ I don't know how you alls got those super clear underhood pictures but I'll give it a go as I'm the deepest L6 lover you'll ever meet .
It's still crappy weather here in La La Land ~ I must needs drive my truck Thursday & Friday so I'll try to remember to take my camera and grab some snaps . It's just another clapped out old 250 , not a shining thing like some here but then it's a real workhorse in spite of burning all that darned oil .

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
Pulled this Inline 250 out of a 1967 chevy c10 stepside and going to put it in my 67 c10 longbed. Question: I have a rochester Single barrel carb and do not know where the passing gear cabel attaches to.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
That's a Rochester Series 'B' carby and the kickdown cable attaches to the lower arm on the throttle linkage , you may have to go rob it off some old Nova / Chevelle Ect. in Pick-A-Part , for now it's not important as you can always manually pull the shift lever down one notch , that's a better way anyway .
Congrats on your new (to you) 250 C.I.D. ! now strip off all the accessories , mounts & ect. , plug the holes and scrub it Hospital clean & re spray it , then the accessories gloss black so when you re assemble it , it'll look really nice .

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
What color should I paint it? Last time I sprayed my old straight 8 buick 320 it burned the paint right off hahaaaa. I used the engine spray from auto parts store too. Do i spray the the intake manifold and exhaust manifold too? or just the block and the valve cover/oilpan?

Re : Post Your Straight Six Pics!
Engine paint is a subjective thing unless you're restoring it .
I like Chevrolet / GMC red , others prefer Chevrolet orange and still others prefer the passenger car blue . The main thing is to paint the entire lump including manifolds then assemble the accessories and drive it , the exhast manifold paint will burn off quickly and the contrast of black motor mounts , starter , power steering pump and so on against the engine color and bare metal carby , dizzy and alternator , will make it look ' factory ' even if you choose some engine color that more matches or accentuates the truck's color . See ? . I suppose it's obvious I built & sold used vehicles for many years , the devil as they say , is always in the details , a dealer engine overhaul/rebuild or replcement , was *very* persnickity in this manny back in the day . If you take the time to really scrub it clean , especially in the corners & crevices , the new paint will stick well and last a long time . DO NOT use cheapo paint ! . I took some pix of my 250 yesterday and will try to post them , it's nothing special as I've said so no whining about the HEI or chrome rockerbox please ! .

I'd rethink that PCV System before I made that determination.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!
I've been making a little progress on my 292 build.
Milo can't wait! One thing I need to know-what is this: And does it go in the big hole on the upper side of the oil filter place?:
