Sharp eye there Jason. Yes they are. Set off all the car alarms in the neighborhood when they were on my Chevelle, dumping just in front of the real axle - so I had them cut off and saved them for the truck.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Hey Mac.....first off congrats on the break-in. I was wondering about the resonators you mentioned. What, where, and do they tone it down a bit? I have the 40's dumpin' in front of the rear tires and it about knocks stuff off the walls. I wouldn't mind turning it down to about 7.........thanx.

Summit Racing: Hedman Hedders 17120 - Hedman Hot Tips Chrome Exhaust Tips: $23.95

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-17120/

But be aware - these are only 2" diameter inlets and 2.5" outlet, so if you’re going for big time street performance - forget it. My small block has a stock cast iron manifold and a two barrel Rochester, so don’t consider these particular parts if you’re pulling a big CFM carb. There has to be somebody else in the Summit line (or Jegs) that carry larger diameter units. The main effect of the resonator tips I have is it curbs that ‘drag strip’ thunder just a bit. Like I said before - when I ran the mufflers on the Chevelle I thought I was going to have to go to the dentist regularly to have my fillings replaced. Great for 1320 feet (oh, sorry: 1,000 feet now), but not for a hundred mile road trip.

Yeah, I hate when that happens. It’s almost like the muffler manufacturers need showrooms with either ten engine/muffler set-ups or at least audio recordings of what they’ll sound like.

Thanks Alan, it has taken about five times longer than it should have - but I’ve learned a great deal along the way, and without a back-up vehicle it would have been a butcher job that I would have ended up fighting for its first 50,000 miles

Off to home to have 'The Tan' towed - one last time - to HB Transmission.

According to the OC Sheriff's office - it rarely, if ever happens that way on these old classics. Usually the're skipped out-of-state or south of the border.

This idiot, for some drug-related reason, took my perfectly good straight six and TH350 out of the truck - threw them in the bed, and proceed to put a 283 V-8 and old granny farmer's 3-speed in the vehicle.

My re-builder said he'd never seen a block with so many cracks. I have no answers for why Mr. 3-Time-Loser did what he did to my fine old truck.

Yeah that makes no sense, I guess some people just have V8 on their mind and really have no idea about anything else. On a side note, and apologies I am not trying hijack the thread but will a TH350 bolt up to an L6 without too much problems?

Perfectly. Unfortunately - when I let the 6 go I forgot to take the flex-plate off (just lazy) and had to buy one from Jeg's for the 283.

A Homer moment.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Hey Mac, good to hear you got the tan running. The thread is entertaining as can be! Did I remind you about drilling the bleed hole in the thermostat lip? If not sorry about that. A 1/4 hole in the lip lets the air bleed out and if you keep the cap off and the coolant level about an inch below the top of the radiator, it usually will not puke over the top when the thermostat opens.
Do you have a spin on oil filter? If so remember the oil change interval for that new engine. I think I posted it for you somewhere in here. If not let me know, I'll repost it. Lastly will you have this back in time for the Brothers Truck Show this year. If not you should go anyway, take your son and grandson. It is full of a lot of cool old Chevy trucks. Plus you may meet some board members there.

Yeah. And at my last visit, Friday before last, he said he'd "call when it was ready." Which basically translates to - don't call us, we'll call you.

Not so much. My 3-page list may be pressing this guy's patience a bit.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

So, I swerved by HB Transmission Friday afternoon to see if they’d auctioned off my truck, or, if it had been stolen again. The helper guy was the only one there - washing his truck before he closed the shop down and he was kind enough to let me walk under my truck, up on the rack.

I was truly amazed. If this thing might possibly work half-as-well as it looks, I’m going to be a happy camper. I instructed (via my 3-page list) them to go through my brake system (because I knew it was becoming dangerous) and what they did, along with the drive-line work and rear end rebuild, makes those units look like they did on the factory assembly line!

I’m going to leave this sleeping dog alone and not harass the owners over taking so long. The pile of parts that came off the under-carriage of that truck were truly scary - including the busted front springs. (And here I thought it was by gigantic caboose that was causing my C10 to lean toward the front-left corner.)

Mac.

Funny you should say that - I just picked this up recently.

I wasn't going to say anything, because I haven't figured out the computer interface yet, but everything in its good time. And you know how quick I can be with this kind of stuff.
