$120 worth of metal etch and high build primer later, and the bedsides are all one color. Primer is a color. They found one small dent after the primer was laid down, so that will be fixed and a little more primer shot on. Cab corner mud work appears to be done, and I think the drivers door is done as well. Once those are primed, will be time for a block party!

It's still early in the week. You could have that painted and put together by Friday, you know. You just have to provide the proper "motivation"......

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

Considering it is the only thing in the shop to work on right now, it is being worked on more than I want to admit. Monday we took in 1 job. 1. Ouch. And now we're waiting on a reinspect for it.

Anyways, got the cab and front end blocked just about. Of course the cab corners and drivers door needs more primer and some blocking, but for the most part everything blocked out pretty easy and quick. Got some edge sanding to do and then we'll wrap up the cab for primer and some jamb work.
Next step, guide coat and block the bedsides I suppose.

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

Oooohhh, that sucks. The other estimator was out most of last week and yesterday, so I was pretty busy. We still don't have a lot going, but I have a few big jobs in here. Seems like everyone bailed for spring break.

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

I am trying to blame spring break myself, but sure does seem like in the past our spring break weeks were busy. Mostly with college kids who are home and getting their cars fixed while they can borrow mom and dads car or whatever. I know I'm seeing a lot more cars running around with damage, so some are just choosing not to fix them I suppose.

Back to the truck. Got the cab primed and the bed blocked, also got the tailgate in primer. Might be able to get the jambs done tomorrow. Talked myself out of doing the inside of the bed today. Maybe once things pick up and I get a few bucks I'll have it bedlinered or something. Right now I just can not justify spending the materials to paint in there.

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

Well, my painter was going to paint the bed and tailgate today, but decided to get the jambs done on the cab first. One thing led to another, and since we are doing pins and bushings anyways, we took the doors totally off. Since they were off.... we decided to go ahead and jamb them. I guess by the time we're done the only original paint that shows is the firewall and inside the bed (bed liner later in life). I am not restoring this truck. I am not restoring this truck. I am not restoring this truck.

that red looks like it is going to be nice. Is that a factory red, to go along with your restoration objectives?

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

I just have to explain to the wife why we had to order paint today, and there are really no cars in the shop to show why. Some basic supplies, gallon of clear and hardener and couple extra quarts of the red toner that goes in the paint formula mix... $1200.
My jobber better step up and refund some of this like they said they would, or I might be calling DuPont or Sherwin Williams again.

And yes Pockets, that is the factory red that goes on it. The white two tone will be the bright white that goes on the GM trucks.

Maybe he is going for that "original" patina. But it's not a restoration. Seriously. It's not.

It still has the original carpet in it in, and original dash pad and door panels, plus original suspension bushings. No where near a restoration right? Painter is blowing the bed off, has it wrapped up and about to roll it in the booth. I'm excited to finally see some of the exterior "done".

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

That's right. Keep the original bushings in it, and it isn't a restoration. When it's painted and lettered, sounds like an advertising expense to me. Is the front half about ready to spray?

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

Yes, the front clip is almost 100% prepped, as is the cab. Probably needs a little edge sanding here and there, that's all. Body man will hopefully get the doors back on it with new pins and bushings today and then I might see it all painted before the weekend.
Of course I have not ordered any of the belt moldings yet, but I have enough stuff here to get a start on reassembly this weekend if it does get painted. I also need to track down a roll of body side molding. Used to be able to get it from Finishmasters, have to call them and see about it I guess.

a gallon of clear and some quarts of red for $1200? That better be some top notch stuff!

I have to agree with Jonboy, sounds like a good advertising write off to me

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

Red toner (we mix our own colors here) that makes up the majority of this color cost me $123.35 per quart. Gallon of clear costs me $217.40, quart of hardener for the clear is $100.08, reducer is $51.65 a gallon. Rest of the order was some other reducers, a few other mixing toners, plastic sheeting, sand papers, panel bonding adhesive (have a bedside job in the shop) etc.

With what I've jambed already, primer and sealer and all the stuff that goes with it, no doubt in my mind it will have about $800 in materials, my cost. And yes, none of this stuff is anything you can buy at O'Reillys. If I had it to do over again, I would have just gotten two gallons of Centari or Delstar (enamel), if they still even make it. Some of the best paint jobs I've ever had came from Delstar with two final coats of color that were 1/2 and 1/2 mix with urethane clear (cocktailed if you would).

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

OK, that makes more sense then on the price. I didn't catch the "toner" part in the previous message.

$800 seems like a really good price. I've seen cost sheets that were in the low 1k range for name brand stuff for all the liquid materials used, and I would certainly expect you should get some kind of price break being a shop that buys a lot.

Can't wait to see it finished!

Re: Shop Truck refurb, code name Chaser

I was watching him mix primer, and it was running about $30 per mixed quart on the primer. All in all we probably have 2 gallons of mixed primer on it.

The white is on the bed and tailgate! Just got masked off so he can start laying the red base on. Can't wait to see it with clear on it.!

However, found one more dent in the passenger door. Fixing that real fast, will push the cab to being painted tomorrow. I'm not saying this is a perfectly straight truck now, but most the other imperfections in the metal are in normal areas where even new they had waves. This dent however, would bother me.
