Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Gabriel, the windshield to have install would of been about 260$ the local glass place sold the windshield for 95$ ans since i already had a gasket we just did it our selfs, was actually pretty easy. The bed liner was easy to do, but easy to over spray i taped everything up and noticed the next day a couple of black specs on the back of the cab 2 feet about the bed, i have not used it yet but considering its about $130 to do it your self i think its well worth it. As far as your truck bring it down and we can spray it.

So i pulled the govenor out of the tranney, nothing wrong with it, pulled the pan, looks pretty clean no metal chunks any ways. Found the problem with the TCC my 3/4 pulse switch which is supposed to be NC is open, so will be replacing those. I am still trying to figure out the no shift, i will drop the valve body tomorrow. I also picked up my new trans temp sensor.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

I should also be able to see the TCC signal with my lap top. I need to check that the P/N switch and spedo are registering through the computer. With the key on i get a 12v on pin A which is from the brake circuit, i get 12v on pin B which says its the high gear sig to the ECM so i guessing it shorts it out and tells the computer its in 4th. But no power or ground on pin D, which is what i would expect since the ECM sends the ground signal. On another note i realized the tranny was from an 88 and up truck, so the switches and pan set up are a little different than the 87, i hope thats all thats keeping the TCC from working. The spedo is way off, i just shifts into 4th and the spedo says your going 80. I need to look up the correct replacement gear and get one on order.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

I got some more tuning done today. I put a new 195 thermostat in, hooked up a new fuel pressure guage and ran the engine with my laptop hooked up, idled for a while and the computer showed the temp slowly rising and that it was in open loop and running lean. I bumped the fuel pressure up to almost 14 and then realized that the computer temp was not getting above 182 deg. I also noticed the o2 sensor seemed to be very slow in changing. I went and got a new temp sensor and a 4 wire o2 sensor, all i could get no one had a 3 wire that was not a bosch, but the 4 wire is an ac delco universal with not plug juist the wire and pins. I hooked it up, ign power for the heater, body ground for the heater, signal for the comp and a seperate ground to the engine. Fired the truck back up the o2 sensor was much more active, and the temp came up better and finally it went into closed loop. Then it was a little on the rich side so i dropped the fuel down to 12.5 and made a run with it, it seems to be pretty close even with the short drive i didnt get a lean or rich condition, however i did manage to make my knock sensor check engine light come on, not sure why, then a mile later it went out. I did re-use the old sensor, maybe a new one would be better. I am also having more tranny issues, it was working but not its stuck in 1st, and the TCC is not locking.

The computer is sending the TCC lockup signal but i am not getting a 4th gear indication on the winALDL program, guess i half to drop the pan and look at the sensors. I also confirmed the P/N switch is working and the VSS is working, funny when you drive it the spedometer and the computer give different readings. The VSS seems to be correst and the spedometer is was too fast, i am thinking the speedometer is bad, it has gotten stuck at the 15 mph spot, that required a couple of taps to get it to come back.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

I did notice that my wiper position needs some attention, its not wiping all the way on the drivers side. The aligment i think is off a touch it seems to wander back and forth a touch. I need to replace the wiper switch its totally worn out, and the delay does not work. My trans temp sender broke, the new one will be here in the morning. The brakes seemed to pull a little to the right with heavy braking, but if i remember i did replace one of the calipers. More to come im sure, dont have time to notice everything when your concentrating on the eng and trans.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Ordered some more tranney parts, should have the lock up issue fixed after christmas. I the computer is reading my over all fuel as a little rich, the BLM is about 115, so a little more lean and then another test run.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Tranney is back together, should be better than before. Just waiting for my new torque converter to throw it back in. I also decided to replace the input seal on the transfer case, the old one was cracked bad and i think i was leaking down the case.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Found some of the pan bolts and dust shield bolts were stripped out, got a heli coil kit and fixed them up. I also added some rubber mounting to the fuel pump hopefully that will quiet it down a little. Torque converter should be here tomorrow.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Fedex failed again, now the converter has been delayed another day. I thought i would replace the delay switch, pulled the column apart what a pain. You half to de-pin the connectors and pull the wiring out. I replaced the turn signal switch, and wiper delay switch, swapped out the steering wheel, and installed my jeep cherokee steering shaft out of a 95. The shaft fit pretty good, i did not alter it at all, the length was even correct. All i had to do was put a little grind on the column output for the bolt to slide across it. The wiper delay is now working, it would not stop before even when turned off, i found the stop switch on the motor was not engaging the ramp. I pulled the motor out and ran it, wow did it sound horrible, grinding all the way. I got a new motor and installed it, but of course nothing is simple. The new motor would park about 1/3 the way up the windshield. The plastic wheel in the motor was installed in the wrong position for stopping the motor. The store did not have any more so i pulled it apart drove the roll pin out and moved the wheel to a different position and amazingly it works great. The fuel pump is also quieter now. I put rubber under the clamps and washers and rubber bushings under the screw heads.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Nice work! I just installed my wipers last week. Mine were wanting to go backwards pulling the wiper arms down to the hood. I finally figured out I had the arm that attaches to the motor 180 degrees in the wrong direction!

That XJ shaft looks good. I hear those are a lot stronger than the stock rag joint.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

I had some slop in my steering and it felt a little wandering on the few miles i drove it. It turns out the original was slightly loose where it slipped on the bottom of the column, and i found a clamp on the pitman arm that i did not torque down all the way so there was a little play there too, it feels really tight. I cant wait to get it on the road again and feel the difference.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Well i ordered what should be the last of my parts, wheel well trim, fuel filler hose, spedo drive housing, and some other small things. This has been quite a project and over involved. To recap it is a 77 2wd silverado frame, cab, bumpers, and rad support. 1980 hood, 79 grille, 73 dr fender, repo pass fender, repo inner fenders, 90 jimmy doors, 84 box, 90 rear axle, 87 front axle and trans case, 88 trans, 80's rh fuel tank, repo pass fuel tank, dash and guages from 87, 70's 350 engine with tbi heads, 87 fuel injection system, 01 silverado rims, 90's serpentine system, and a bunch of other small stuff thanks to a pick and pull and craigslist. It does make it challenging to get parts at the store, i half to remember what i put in it.

I have watched your build. Your truck has gone through an awesome transformation!

Mine is a mut also. 87' frame and drive train, 83' cab, 89' Suburban wiring harness and front clip, and 90' serpintine belt setup. Not sure what year the bed is from. I think you got me beat though!

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Well time to catch up. I had some issues with the spedo drive holder. I ordered a 700R4 for the transfer case since it uses the 700 style spedo gear. The have 2 different holders one for 34-39T gears and one for 40-45. Of couse i had to go from a 40T to a 38T for the ratio and tire size. Well it turns out the NP208 uses a TH400 gear holder. I found that the hole in the holder is off set and you can put it and rotate it opposite of where it normally sits and it works, at least for a 38T. All i had to do was make a new holder for it. I got the torque converter and put my tranny back in. Took it for a drive, steering is now awesome, just a little off center. Still could not tell if the TC was locking, and the spedo was still fast but no longer bouncing after i oiled the cable up and loosened the routing. Well i went about 20 miles about half way got a check engine light for the knock sensor and erg valve, this is the second time for the knock sensor, so i ordered a new one since it was original to the burban i got the parts from and drove back home. I got home and noticed a tick in the engine at idle.

I also found the EGR valve is leaking when closed you can blow air through the valve part, i got lucky and rock auto had one ac delco part with matching numbers for $35.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Thanks bruiser, i have been lucky i guess mechanically inclined i have been told. Anyways i grew up with two older brothers that were pretty good with small engines. When i was in high school i had a couple years of auto mechanics and i had a job at a automotive repair garage for a couple of years. I have always fixed everything myself. About the only thing i have done for me has been alignments and mounting and balancing tires.

Re: Rusty, crushy, but trysty.

Spent friday working on the front center caps, i took out the cutting tool i got from harbor freight and cut them out. It worked pretty good, i put some glue between the metal and plastic inner so it would not rattle, since these are two layers. I finished removing the old cam, the only damage i found was the cam lobe and lifter. The new parts came in friday morning. I got the new cam installed and all buttoned up. I finally got it running today, i ran straight 30W with break in additive. The break in was terrible, i guessed on the timing to get it close and then i kept wanting to overheat. The stupid gm style plastic locking thing that goes in the water pump started leaking again. Guess they are one time use only. I had to shut down twice during the break in to cool and get more water in it, it had a big bubble that didnt want to come out. I also got a new rad cap as the one i had was not working too good. Once i got the run done i was able to idle it and top off the cooling system, get the timing back to 0 and change the oil. It is ready for the road again and some fine tuning.
