Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

a couple of bigger ones I made patches for, ones that were where I was putting reinforcement plating I plug welded to the plate. Some tiny holes I put a screw threw it, welded it up and then cut the remaining screw off.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

8-24 Sunday. Got four hours in today. Sanded down some duraglass on the firewall. Stripped roof and the whole back of cab. Coated roof and back bottom of cab. Put some Rage on a portion of the back wall to smooth is out a little more. Should be spraying epoxy on the back wall, its getting white paint. Doesn't look like much, but it was a lot of stripping today.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

thanks, all I used was a 4.5" grinder with flap discs (which were beat) and then switched over to a cut off disc.

Great work. All the hours add up. Your cab color does look a lot like mine! What will you use as a sound deadener for the cab?

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

thanks fellas. 49' indeed very similar patinas. As for sound deadner. I'v used double sided heat shield in my 51', used two rolls of 4x6'. I also bought a little bit of hush mat for it. So on this truck I kinda wanted to try all the sticky type hushmat, dyno mat etc style deadner. I honestly don't know what works better, but I think the sticky type would make laying carpet easier, everything will be nice and tight. Only thing I don't like about the double sided heat shield is you can't really work on that stuff as starts kinda flaking off. I put mine in on my 51' then wired it and it just started letting off fine granulations you'd have to sweep off. I think I will get some of that for behind the seat on the back wall though and do the sticky stuff on rest of truck.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

8-31 Sunday, fastest and rainiest summer ever. Anyway, more boring cab work. Did up the other side cab corner, live and learn. Just buy the dang corners. Don't have and english wheel yet so I had to make this one in pieces.

Finally got the Herculiner on. I just brushed it.

Next on my list is the clutch, then I can get trans in. Also priming and painting the firewall so I can get cab on frame. Then I'm going full on with the brakes. Still need money for that stuff. But I did get Stainless Russel brake hoses and some copper nickel line. Just need the calipers, rotors, MC and prop valve, some fittings and pads. I'll also be doing all the pedals and steering column.

Once all that is done, all I'll need is a driveshaft and I should be able to move it. Shooting for October.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

AD thanks man, always like your uplifting posts. Yeah I really wanna get this thing on the road by late fall. Work on small details over the winter. I just tallied up my hrs in the cab, for everything so far, all the patches I made and put in, the whole floor, all the stripping of everything, coating you name it...120.5 hrs.

I literally replaced every single part on the cab, minus the rockers, firewall and some of the toe boards. Next one I'll be able to cut that time down alot.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

That's one solid floor!! I will have to totally replace mine as well, so I'll def look back at this when the time comes.

All that elbow grease is a pain but look how far you've come (and how much $$ you've saved by using what you have.) Great inspiration for anyone on a limited budget!

You should do a comparison with materials of what you have used vs patch panels/parts, etc. Be really cool to see how much you've saved.

Can't wait to see and hear this thing roll!!

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

49' its a catch 22, I'v said before that the idea of bringing a basket case cab back to life is to do it with a reasonable budget. OR why not just find a good cab and pay up. So it all probably evens out somehow. My take on alot of things while building these are spreading your time and money evenly. For the cost of all the patch panels I would have needed, I literally could have bought a whole truck (no matter condition, having something to work with is what matters). So in a rough nutshell here are some costs if you were to buy the patches. Prices are from classicparts
Outer cowls $40x2=80(this is for the lower portion, the full portion are 60 per)
Inner cowl $45x2=90
Inner kick panels $28x2 is 56
Floor (say the "streetrod" one has tunnel, toe board and floor) $325 Full stock floor is 5-600)
Door pillars (two front hinges, two back pillars) 4 x $28 =112
inner cab corners $27 x 2 =54
outter corners 2x$30 = 60
So this sums up to $777 without shipping. That could easily go up if you need more than just those common patches. I salvaged the front of my rockers.

My costs I don't know for sure, but I used close to a 10x4' sheet of 18g which cost $60. I used alot of tubing, well over 100ft, so lets just say atleast $100
Say atleast a full tank plus on shielding gas (just for cab) $60 and about 10lbs of wire so thats about $30, roughly about $250 worth of material but alot of time. Not to mention my floor is tunneled differently than any aftermarket floor, so I couldn't just buy that. These are rough figures, always have misc expenses like cutoff disc, electricity etc.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

9-5, Closed up a couple more big holes in the firewall. Shot some SPI epoxy on the wall, inside door pillars, roof and back window area of the cab. Hoping to get the paint on the firewall this weekend so cab will be ready to put on frame. The firewall should be same color as the rims, as is the dash. The back roof area will be white.

Clutch is on its way, so I gotta finish cleaning and painting the trans, once clutch is in and I run a few lines I can put cab on. Then onto the pedals and steering and chipping away at the brakes.

Got some Herculiner on the gas tank as well. I have to put a little filler in on some of the factory ripples on the firewall, hit with some highbuild and so on.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

9-6 Thanks guys. today I touched up a few areas and put more epoxy on. I'll wait till next weekend to put some high build on, then sealer then paint. Monday I'm gonna work on some brake and fuel line, also get my clutch I just got put in. Dual friction rated around 500hp from phoenix friction.

Gotta clean up trans and paint it, hopefully get it in monday too. Then next weekend if I paint cab, I can most likely set it back on frame. Can't wait for that. Then I can start on pedals and steering.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

9-8 Didn't get to work as much as I like today. Spent way to long getting the grease off this trans. Frigging pressure washer bit the dust so I didn't even get to try that. Just scrapped, sprayed, scraped sprayed, used air gun alot, used degreaser and break cleaner. Took I prolly have 3-4hrs in this thing. But its coming along. I should have it in this weekend. shot some self etching primer, then some paint thats made for rims.

Got some clamps with the rubber on them to run some fuel, brake and air line before I get cab back on. Next weekend will be spraying high build and touching up some areas. Maybe the 3rd weekend of Sept I can have cab on. Start on the pedals.
