Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Today's progress includes making 4 frame rail sides and welding them in. Next up will be tops and bottoms and patch plates over the connection of old and new for extra beefiness. I've got a project to bring home on a car hauler trailer and I can't have my tow vehicle's frame break in two!

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Welded in 4 patch plate reinforcements where I connected to the front of the old frame last night. Also cut and fit up the tops and bottoms of the new frame, sorry no pics though.

Hey Drew, are you going to have to cut your bed floor to accommodate the new braces? Looks like you are beefing up the frame considerably.

Yes, the frame will protrude through the floor about 5 inches, I'm currently thinking I'll get a new set of wheel tubs and tub it out to hide it. But the tubs may be short to just cover the frame? Kinda stair stepped.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Two nights worth of work here in these pics.
I raised the frame so much, I had to mount my snubbers on raised blocks. Later if I decide it needs to be lower I've got an easy inch and a half by taking them out. I even welded a nut inside the frame to screw the snubber straight to the frame. I know I'll want to play again!
Also I have my airbag helpers set up with mounts on the frame and axle.
These Afco coil-over shocks are a tight fit with the quadrasteer, but I managed to make room for them. I'm still working on the upper mount in these pictures.
I think by tomorrow I'll be done welding and can throw some black paint on. Gnande my helper will be home for Easter and I'll have him cutting the bed floor while I'm painting the frame. Maybe get everything hooked back up on Saturday and then be ready for family members here for Easter lunch to help me set the bed back on.

Here you can see the upper and lower suspension mounts I crafted to mount the coil overs.

Can't wait to get this thing back together!

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

See where I'm going with this?

Limiting straps, snubbers, coils, shocks, air bags - all done.

Now to rewire the rear and reinstall the Quadrasteer computer.

Oh and of course, what started this all, A Straight Panhard Rod!

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Whew, got that done in the nick of time.

Tonight I can hook up the lights and pop on the tailgate and be rolling tomorrow.

I'll still have a lot of sheet metal repair to do, but I can drive it while messing with that at night.

I just tested it over the one bump that always bottomed me out and it sailed right over it no problem.

Looks tight! Nice job. Are you just gonna make double-width tubs?

Pretty much, just not quite double the width.

I've got a question for anyone: If your truck is completely level, are the wheel arches exactly the same distance off the ground?

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

One coil over had to come off tonight. Brand new and it sprung a leak at the rebound adjustment screw. Oil is all over, good thing I haven't buttoned up my tubs yet. That also sure made it easy to remove. You can see I am suspended on my backup airbag suspension - What? doesn't everyone have 2 types of suspension ready and usable at all times???

Actually I am able to drive it this way on my overload airbag, it just rides a little low on that corner.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Just found this thread while searching for CCSB builds. Holy smokes. Absolutely amazing. I secifically remember seeing this truck in Hot Rod Magazine, because my first thought was, "Dang, that thing's broken!" Took me 6 solid hours to read it all thoroughly. I giggled like a girl when the quadrasteer was revealed.

Favorite parts of the truck: Kids inside hamming it up, brake dust on the wheels, dirt on the frame and the dirt in the box.

It means you use it. That's what it's there for. It's why you built it in the first place.

If I ever run down through west Tennessee I'll PM you and see if I can come get a picture of this awesome machine.

Of course, if you ever run through Smyrna, I'd love to see it!

P.S. Are you running out to Knoxvegas for the power tour this year?
