I love your smoothing efforts but feel mechanical functionality is more important, clean hard lines and/or another cover would be my vote. Love the progress, can't wait to see the paint.

I'll start by saying I'm not a pro mechanic, but I've been doing this stuff for about 30 years. I have run auto trannies with and without using the cooler in the radiator. No problems. But living up north where the temps can regularly be below zero, it's makes a difference on the tranny warm up. A cold tranny shifts slow and feels like its not quite locking up in the torque converter properly. So using the radiator cooler is probably a good idea if you are planning to drive it when it is very cold.

Frankly, I don't see that happening with your truck. Tranny lifetimes are usually prolonged by running cooler over the life of it. I've never heard or read about tranny failure due to running it below a certain temp for a few minutes until it warms up. The pump, the flow through the tranny and torque converter, etc. will warm the tranny fluid on its own.

As for the holes on the cover for the tranny cooler lines, maybe weld a piece on that looks like an old rivet head. They had both rounded (like the head of a carriage bolt) and pointed ones. If it needs clearancing on the lower one you could drill or grind out the back side. Might even be able to find those bolt head covers to use, which are just stamped out sheetmetal, like what some of the bumper bolts had. Instead of a chrome bolt some had a cover over the head.

BTW, if everything worked perfect the first time you made it, well where's the fun in that?

thanks guys, and the cover that is on there now has just turned into a glorified pattern, both sides are getting completely redone...LOL, but now i know they will fit perfect because my patterns are coming out NICE !! 3 times a charm ...right !

When I ordered my transmission from Bowtie Overdrives, they would not warranty the trans unless I ran it through the radiator then my auxiliary cooler. I set it up like that and with my trans temp gauge, I found that I never got up to 160° like it was supposed to, so I ended up taking the aux cooler out. Now, it gets up to 160° quick and stays there no matter how hot it gets outside, which in southern Louisiana is pretty damn hot!

I have read that for every 10° above 160° that your trans runs, you will cut your trans life in half. How accurate that is I have no idea.

I'm curious though, all of these people that run just an auxiliary cooler instead of using the radiator, how many guys actually have a trans temp gauge and what does it read when you are sitting in traffic with the A/C blowing cold on a 95° day? I know mine will read 160°!

plug the radiator trans lines so you have no lines going to it and you will have a cleaner look , put a small external cooler and call it a day , you will be fine , that's the way i have mine set up , here at 100 degrees and humidity in south florida

got my new SS7 bags in from Porterbuilt today , anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Bolt on Bodydrop !! Made my underhood panels for the third and hopefullly last time last night , plan on beadrolling , bending and dimple dying tomorrow night ! picking up SLOSH TUBZ SQUARED from the body shop and taking them to the fiberglass shop early in the morning ! lots going on ! this baby is getting done !
