Finally an update from me been meaning to for the past few days but I guess it was still in development anyway here goes.

I was able to finally put my brackets onto my newly polished outer Grille shell so she certainly looks perty now just waiting for my inner to be resprayed since I sanded it down a bit going metallic silver same paint as my wood bed slats just wont be shiny so no clear for that. Was thinking about writing up a full how-to on riveting it together when it's pulled apart since I found nothing on the site that supports putting new ones or re-done grille's back together pretty straightforward but wanted to throw my twist into it thoughts??

To my knowledge my tailgate is on it's way to having some sealer on it by sunday or possibly late Saturday night I'll be grabbing pictures tmrw of that process. Just got my factory assembly manual so I'm going to look for the exact hole locations for the the rear trim on the gate and bezels.

Now here's the goodies I got a cigarette lighter assembly since mine was missing and I like the fact that most of my truck works now so I'm buttoning up the last few things on it per say the factory steering wheel I just bought to restore next week along with factory door panel inserts (going black on these to see what they look like in my interior chrome trim) and also still looking for thee best headliner to put into this durn roof of mine since I have the dimensions and trim to do so now.

Minor stuff I finally changed my fuel filter to a visible to see if gunk is getting to the carb thankfully she's clean so far and also replaced all of my plugs since well the pictures says a thousand words.

Those plugs look a bit oily on the threads. Do you have a leaky valve cover?

yes I'm having issues with getting my covers to seal the best way. This last round is the best I've had it but it's still getting out somewhere even gooped up with black urethane to get any bad spots on the covers themselves.

Bummer I had issues with leaks when I first rebuilt my engine and went through three different types of rubber gaskets before I landed on Mr. Gasket extra thick cork/rubber gaskets. I was surprised tat they performed better than the rubber seals but they stopped the leak. I have T handles and would turn them each week just a bit to finally seat them. took about a month before they stopped needing another turn.

Hmm high end low end? I've never used cork before and I have re-usable rubber ones on right now I can't stand the leaking and would like it gone before show season starts

I would not say they are high end but they are not low end either. I got them at Auto Zone. I was ready to try anything since I was washing my new rebuild with 30 weight every time I turned the engine on. I did not use any sealer just put them on the top of the heads them clamped them down. You have to take some time and align them just right on the head so they do not slip off while tightening the valve cover. My valve covers do not have a lip, just a flat piece of powder coated aluminum, so slippage was an issue.

If your using steel valve covers make sure the sealing flanges are flat and level. Another words make sure that there are no high spots. Over the years many people have probably had their hands in those covers and they can get pretty beat up. I have had very good luck with the Felpro permatorque vc gaskets. They are thick and have a little metal ring where the bolts go through so that you can't over torque them.

Mine are a newer brand something like you see at the swap meets or in the books with Chevrolet written across the top. They have a lip but it has chipped areas around that lip. Shawn I believe I'm running a similar gasket as you are where the metal flange is surrounded by rubber. I shouldn't have an issue with cork ones since I have somewhat of a lip so maybe I need to try some and be sure not to over tighten

Just got my insert panels in tonight so I'll begin the stripping process of the old wood grain and I'm going to either black them out and have polished trim around the edges or go wild and try to recreate the wood grain

Maybe its the covers. I had very good luck with those gaskets, but I had Mickey Thompson valve covers on that engine.

I'm starting to think the same which is a complete bummer because i modeled the look of this engine after these covers literally bought them first before the main parts. I may have to grab some cork gaskets tmrw morning and do a quick swap and wash before the big game

and thanks Eric that's one vote for the black with original silver stripe and polished trim around it

Big thanks to KrazyRay here on the board for selling me these door panels here's the current ideal design for them at this point thanks to my lovely girlfriend and her artistic photo-editing skills

No I'm going to strip the panels wood grain off and paint them with something that'll match the semi gloss black on the glove box door for now. Then ill recreate the silver embossed strip and polish the trim rings to accent it

#175 which are 3/16" thick

or these?? #179 which are 5/16" thick


Going to pick some up tmrw from my O'reilly store down my street they've done excellent service with me nothing against Autozone

Sorry I have been at work all day today, long day with two jobs and I am just seeing this, they look similar although the pic was pretty small, Mine were closer to 3/8 thick. But I really dont think it was the thickness but more the composition that was fix. Just remember that they will compress for a bit after install. so be ready to turn 1/4 or 1/2 more as needed.

No problem business is understood over the hobbies anyway I picked them up and went ahead an installed them tonight just snugged right now ill check them when I get to work in the morning (10 mile drive) I got new grommets as well to see if they could help since I saw my breather was soaked as well as the top of the cover may get a new PVC valve as well just to be sure. Now I'm fortunate enough to have a header leak all bolts are tight hope it's not cracked
