Re: Bubba's recycling project

Got a Mr Gasket Universal throttle cable , now all I need is a different gas pedal set-up.
I scrounged one from a Impala but it is not the right configuration. Back to the pick-a-part yard ...

Next question .. Are you guys using the ported vacuum or full manifold vacuum to the HEI ??

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I'm hooked to ported vacuum.
I've used gas pedals from old 68-78 Novas before.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I just went out and messed with mine for like an hour. I don't see a big diff. I did have it the way holley says to do it "tuned vac". I switched it and adjusted my timing. 4* with everything pluged. I just left it hooked up to full. Went for a couple test drives I don't see a difference.

Okay things are not done ,but I am done enough it is drivable again. Daughter is whining, School is almost out and She wants it to finish out the school year

I made the throttle cable plate from a scrap of 12 gauge sheet metal. I will remake it from a piece of 1/8 aluminum and polish it a little since the design is working.

Size: 44.2 KB Plan D on the throttle and pedal. The Nova pedal did not quite fit , so a D@&GE pick-up throttle linkage was donated up and modified a bunch. Heated and straightened to fit better and a GM foot pedal was attached .

I had planned a old school "Barefoot" pedal but daughter turned up her nose and said NO!!
I added a second attachment hole to the linkage to mount a second cable which will attach to the TH350 transmission for a detent cable in the future.
Getting the detent cable long enough to mount at the carb linkage is a PIA.

I set up the HEI advance on full manifold vacuum. I have timed this thing all different ways on ported and full vacuum and it seems to like full vacuum better, I may have to get a adjustable vacuum advance as I am at 40+ total timing. I think it is a little much but the motor is not pinging.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Looks good. Aluminum bracket will look good polished up. I've used 1/8 inch aluminum plate to make air cleaners with. It paints easy too.
For your kick down why not use 2 kickdown cables and build a bracket to join them together in series. Shouldn't be hard to do. And one end could be hooked to your carb.
If 2 cables hooked together are too long look for a shorter one. Lots of bikes and motorcycles use shorter cables.

Hmmm.... I could splice them at the firewall and then run it all the way over to the carb and hook up in the traditional manner. I had not considered a splice, I had thought of a bellcrank mounted over by the heater box ,OR a bellcrank on the firewall and just running the detent cable straight to the pedal.
Adjustment of cable is a problem with that idea.
Thanks geezer, for the idea

It sure runs better and accelerates smoother and quicker and the cable is a major improvement over the old stiff throttle linkage

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Hi Nic, I stopped by Jalopy Jungle friday and the 65 or 66 has been crushed
And Ken at the radiator shop will pressure test that 4 row radiator no charge.
I still need to find some upper and lower radiator saddles for that wider radiator,
I wandered around the junkyard looking at the Hydro boost brake boosters found on the Astro's and diesel trucks. My brakes are still darn stiff and with the light throttle pedal it is now time to get the brakes working a little easier.

Drives a whole lot better, It went to school yesterday and I just saw daughter and truck leave on their way to work tonight at the racetrack.

Took the 4-wheelers up in the timber today to find snowline and we had a lost Walker bear dog follow us back to the truck. Dog was tired, thin and glad to see somebody.Spent all afternoon finding the owners and getting the dog back to them.
The transmitter tracking collars quit and they lost 4 dogs last weekend and only had found the one dog so far. Hope the wolves did not find the others.

Headed to the Saturday night cruise at Patty"s drive in.. Pictures to follow

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Glad you helped the one dog. I'll bet he was happy. That would really suck losing all your dogs, and the collars. I think it happen's often. A guy I knew lost his dogs he threw his jacket on the ground came back 3 days latter and they were there. I lost my horse for a couple days bear hunting thought I would never find him. So whats next for the truck?

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Was at the local car show today. Guy had a 250 in his 54 chev truck. With offy and edelbrock 4 barrel. Here's some pics for how he controls the tv cable for his 700R4. Says he did the same set up when he had a turbo 350 in it. Another bell crank method for a kickdown.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Hey Bubba, our kids have made classics contact at school. He's been driving the 63 there. He got hit a couple of weeks back in the parking lot. Got a text saying the front got hit. I thought for sure the nos custom cab grille I recently installed was toast, but it only got the bumper with a hitch. Whew! Bumpers at the chrome shop now.

Just realized that sounded like our kids hit each other rather than talked trucks. It was a dodge truck that backed into him. Whew again!

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Hey Idaho guys , I am really sorry I cannot make the BBQ. Really good friends/family having a graduation party Saturday noon . I have been assigned to help so I am committed with no options. But hey,! food and beer is involved so I am OK with that. take pictures please.
Here is the thread for the BBQ!
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=452411

Only 1 knee-knocker was at Patties cruise , the band was good but the rains came early. Imperial Kustom was at the cruise,so I told him to check the Idaho meeting thread and come to BBQ if he is still in town.

I met a classmate at Patties cruise from high school 30 some years ago, We had a great time catching up. He has a blown Hudson that is really nice. I cannot believe we have not seen each other in all those years.. we both have missed the re-unions for one reason or another.

R-bar -I am glad nobody was hurt but the bumper, That is why I have held off so long on the body work on daughters truck, I remember the high school parking lots were always having some kinda fender bender.

I had a panic attack the other day down the road in next town of Eagle.
I saw a young man driving in a nice 63-66 blue and white short box and at the distance I was at, It looked like our truck!! Where is my daughter?????
Steal my truck will ya !! SOB- Here I Come!!!!

As it turned the corner towards me ,,,A small rear window became visible so I calmed down.

So ---There is a almost identical truck around the area but with the small rear window , Same blue and white two-tone, short bed ,
I need to find him someday and apologize for turning the air Blue -- and check out the truck!

I have been watching the terrible destruction in the southern states by the twisters. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you affected by the storms

I love the Westside Drive in . The owner (Chef Lou) grew up working there as a kid , Went on to become a famous 5 star chef and went out and saw the world . Then he came home, bought the the old drive-in and the food there is outstanding!!
He has a catering rig as well . I cannot say enough about his cuisine. It was profiled on the Food Network TV show Diners-Drive-ins and Dives a little while ago

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Not much to report on the truck.
Daughter is going to summer school and so is the truck.
She is Student Body President and Co-Editor of the yearbook her senior year so she is taking Government and English this summer to lighten the fall load of Advanced Placement classes and open up the fall schedule .

The truck is running sweet with the Holley, no mechanical problems at all,
I have not built the aluminum adapter plate yet , or the transmission kick down yet either,I just put gas in it and watch it go.
Getting approx 15 MPG after 300 miles
I love old trucks.

I accepted a new job as a Building Safety Official/ City Electrical inspector.
Friday is my last day at my old job as a master electrician.
It seems kinda strange to be cleaning out the service van, knowing I am hanging up my tools after 24 years in the trade.........
Wondering what I have taken on and what the future holds......
Bubba

Congrats man!!

You'll be a shoe in. I'm sure its a bitter sweet transition. Being a technician myself, a little less physically demanding job sounds very appealing from time to time. Especially when in some of the dirty, nasty, confined job locations I find myself in day to day. All the best!!
