Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Speaking of Longhorn Custom Camper Highlanders - this is truly THE "one that got away"... I went to see it in Scottsdale when I lived in Mesa - I'm embarrassed to admit how low the guy came down on the price to sell this and I still didn't bite. I had just sunk an arm and a leg into my white 72, so couldn't justify buying this, even though it was also a big block with tool box and YG8. I called him back a year later (just like I did on the one I currently have) and never got a reply. It was TRULY a great truck and it was for sale for $4500. Yes, that's what I said, $4500... I've never forgiven myself. I even already had a set of steelies to go in it with the PO3s... Ugh.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

SS Tim, Could you give your opinion if this is a Highlander? It has an order number so I am thinking that is what the customer wanted. Going to pick it up tomorrow.

It sure is!
Nice SPID with good basic options that compares very favorably with another (124 units higher and a 618 Highlander) built there at Flint.
Notably your truck also has both the chromed front and rear bumpers that are so often added on.
Lower bodyside molding and full wheel covers round out the exterior.

618 Orange Plaid is of course what makes it a Highlander, an upgrade for the Z62 Custom Deluxe trim option.

We of course expect more pictures very soon and right here is a good place to start. Hope all goes well tomorrow!

Yes that is a Highlander! 611 Blue Plaid is the identifier.
More to the point this truck is the reason for this thread. That is to weed out and identify the "Hidden Highlanders" (like this one) that have been almost or completely changed out. To many people the white belts would be the question. To us its why did they change it? :-)

Thanks for digging this up!
But somehow I don't see you shipping it home to Ventura.
Lets find this a home guys.

Could very well have been ordered that way. Since they are shipped loose inside the cab it would be no problem at the factory end. In my files I do have trucks ordered with both a spare whell/tire assembly and a spare bare wheel too. IIRC both were 16" front and 16.5" rear wheel optioned trucks as well.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I've never faked anything in my life (other than an orgasm) ( ) but I am going to check on getting yellow plaid for my ochre truck. My dad had the black vinyl seat redone in 1990 and it's so full of cushion that my thighs rub the steering wheel. When I get that fixed I am going to try and go with the yellow/black plaid and white (parchment) vinyl seats I see on here.

Since my dad made his own bed out of 1/8 steel my truck will never be original so I might as well make it look a bit nicer.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

The original owner just turned 96, his son filled me in on the history of the truck. The truck was on the showroom floor at Ande Chevrolet in Lawernceburg, Indiana. The dealer had Cincinnati Bengal Tiger Stripe decals on the sides installed. The Father bought it the next day and had them change out the chrome bumpers for the rear step and the painted front. Steering wheel was just replaced but he saved the old one, as well as the rocker guards. Carpet is like new. No radio in the truck (radio delete)? The dealer installed that one. He grew tired of the stripes and peeled them off. The white paint is original with very little touch up. Hope I'm not boring you guys, I think the history is pretty cool when you can find it on these old trucks. I'm putting another 72 Highlander together and this one gives me an exact blueprint. Thanks for all the good comments. The owners son is a disabled war vet and he will appreciate this.

Does anyone know what this part is? Mounted right side on the frame, has two holes in the top and is shaped like some sort of scoop. I forgot to ask the owner.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

That is a great find and a great story.
To clarify some points about the original build.

This has to be the first case I have ever seen of chromed front and rear bumpers being replaced prior to first sale. The factory painted front bumper would have been white in this case.

The rear bumper is typical of a dealer sourced and installed example. Many, like this, are positioned lower than the factory option rear step bumper.

Radios were an option and this truck was assembled without one. While the term "radio delete" is commonly used it isn't actually correct for 67-72 trucks. Only in the case of a base build, line item not being installed for a credit is it then truely a "delete" option. Heaters, bumpers, spare tires and hub caps come to mind here. Though on later vehicles, when radios were standard, they could be deleted for a credit by law. Same goes for the "radio opening cover plate". :-)

On this particular radio it appears to be later than a unit the dealer would have installed new in 72. In fact with the box speakers it looks like a late 70s typical "boxed set".

Finally since this is your "pattern truck" the arm rests to be correct are white "as built".

Thanks again for sharing these pictures of your new truck.

Those were factory installed on the small blocks (350s only?) to help cool the manifolds. They ran hotter with the emission controls working corrctly and apparently the air flow reduced cracking. Somewhere I have a passing mention in a service or training bulletin. Most of the time they are missing or bent back.

If you are in picture mode some of the evap system, idle solenoid and related harness would be appreciated. its so nice to see a truck correct in so many ways.

Cant post pic but my codes don't have 613 in them.
1YG720 SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL
1Z6260 CUSTOM DELUX EQUIP
160410 GRAY HIGHLANDER PLA

Its a '72 Orange and White with the orange plaid design and white door panels. Tilt wheel 350/400 combo fleet side long box with steel floor. It also has some special hub caps apparently also. Well only 2 now. Will post pictures when I figure out how to.

Designed to help prevent damage like this I suspect (pic from Tbone1964) but will add as an aside that I do not believe 4wds were so equipped...
