Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

Hey all;
Update on the Headers.
Doug Thorley screwed up the shipping adress so after 3 days it went nowhere, and since customer service isn't what it used to be they won't make up the mistake by overnighting it at their expense, I don't expect to see them untill Monday or Tuesday.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

Hey man I am faceing the same thing with the shipping. Still no gas tank. Maybe this next week. Oh by the way, I am going to raise my bed I think 4 1/2 inches maybe more. I seen it in Classic Truck this month issue. I have been wanting to do this from the get go. Good luck with the headers.

The gas tank is like deleted e mails. They are flooting around somewhere.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

Hey all;
The Headers were delivered today so I set about installing them.
I had to rebend the brake lines from the proportioning valve down to the T connector so they would clear and also not be within an inch of a header tube or the steering shaft.
The fitment was excellent, the finish is outstanding.
Bubble wrap for the win!
Here are the obligatory photos.

The headers look real good. Better on the engine than in a picture. I like the chrome look.

Been a while since I looked at this. Your progress is awesome! I feel like I got into a time warp or something, lol. The truck is looking great, and that engine is really going to be something. I can't wait to see more!

Thanks fellas, they are very nice, as are the CPP engine perches, however if I had to do it all over again I might have gone a different way because of cost.

Thank you for the kind words.
The next step is just getting it running, I am having motivation problems at the present time but I assure you it is just temporary.

You have worked thru all the other problems and the motivation problem will work itself out.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

Hey all;
Today I drilled the holes in the frame and crossmember and installed the supply line from the filter to the tank.
It is so hot outside that I can't stand to be out there longer than 30 min at a time so the supply line from the filter to the fuel rail will have to wait untill another day.
Here are a couple of pics.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

I know about the heat. Lucky I have the canophy to work under. Are you going to install a rubber grommit where the gas line goes thru the frame just asking.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod

I have two layers of shrink tubes around the lines that I haven't shrunk yet a 3/8" and 1/2" working in concert with fuel line clips that should keep the aluminum from chafing.

I got up early this morning and installed the other half of the supply line from the filter to the fuel rail.

Depending on what fuel system the engine uses, return or returnless you have to buy different styles of filter.
The returnless style used commonly for swaps is the corvette version which is the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter combined into one.
http://secure.ultracart.com/catalog/.../ACC-1028.html
The return style uses a EFI fuel filter for high PSI fuel flow, the one I have is made by Aeromotive.

I don't know if I would trust the shrink tubing. a grommit would do a lot better job. Don't you think. just asking. grommits can be found in any parts store.

Not necessarily. Most part store grommets are made of a very soft rubber compound. The typical size that fits the fuel line would have around .060" to .080" of wall thickness between the line and the hole it is passing thru. I used comparably sized rubber grommets for the stealth latches on my tailgate and they failed very quickly. The heat shrink tubing, on the other hand, is a very scuff/wear resistant material. Brian wisely used two layers where it might come in contact with the frame. As I recall, I think he also plans to use Adel clamps to minimize any vibrations which will mean less work for the shrink tubing. There are plastic grommets available that might afford more protection than the rubber type. However, the large oblong hole in the frame also presents a retention challenge. I think he'll be okay with his current setup. Of course, nothing precludes him from using both. Sort of like using a condom after a vasectomy.

This is the first time I have ever tried to bend and instal my own fuel lines and on top of that I'm making it even more challenging by running it through the frame.
I bought an extra 25 feet of fuel line just incase I totally screwed it up, so if it fails I can try something else more extreme to protect it next time, but I think the Adel clamps will work just fine.
