Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
9-15 Well not much to report this weekend. Only got about 8hrs in. Blocked down the epoxy, got some high build on. Blocked that down, got some white on the inside. Waiting on my paint to show up so I can mix up a darker more brownish gold for the firewall and dash. If it turns out how I'm thinking, I'll be doing inside of doors and door jam the same color. I'll be doing white vinyl roof and door covers if all goes as planned.
Got some powerstop front rotors in. Chipping away at the brake system. So sick of not having this cab done, hopefully next weekend I can have it on frame.

The paint is nice! And of course only 8 hours on it is 8 hours closer to your goal. Keep at it 99 you are getting there.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
thanks guys, AD yeah 8 more hours on the cab. That thing is eating up the whole build!!! I got a little more in today. Paint came and I mixed some up and shot the firewall. So far its too dark now. So I'll have to scuff and redo that. Just keep adding more work for myself!!! I wanted a metallic goldish/bronze look. My rims are ok and I painted them. But sometimes in certain light I feel like I want it darker. Same with the dash and firewall. I want to have good contrast inside with the white. Hopefully I figure it out this weekend, which is drastically cut short on time again, family matters...

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
Hey billy, you'll get there man. I think the same thing. I look back at a year ago when I was just finishing up this shack of a garage, had no electric, didn't have half the crap I got in there now. Its been 10 months since I yanked this body off frame. I went from 1 day a week to 2-3 days a week now since my gal lost her job. Man I would be really behind if that had not happened!! But... now I'm spending money I don't have like water. I have put about 400 hrs into everything so far. Most of dash and engine I worked on during the week after work, so I'v been squeezing every hour in I can. It's tiring and to look back on all the stuff you have to do to get them on the road, well its overwhelming.
Just gotta take it one day at a time, order what parts you can afford and hope it all falls into the timeline of what your doing. I spend hours everyday looking for parts, the best deals I can, and alot of researching on the net. I just want this thing done and i won't half step things so its not like I can just finish it quick! I'v had a vision for this thing about a year bf I started it, so its been a long mental and physical battle. To make matters worse I have 2 projects for my friend I'm suppose to do, and way more of my own to atleast start on, would like to do one just like this after I'm done, in between all the other stuff. Some days you'll feel like it will be done in no time and others you'll think of all the little things that still need done and you'll be doing circles in your head. Just chip away and it will all come together someday.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
I know man. It just seems like every time I get a free minute someone else or something else needs my attention. Ive gotten a little done, but nothing post or picture worthy just yet. I got the 65 Impala and Im going to get a 68 Impala next weekend so that shoots any parts budget out of the water. But unless a killer deal on another truck comes along, Im done buying projects until my 49 is done.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
billy, totally feel you man. I could write a book about how much crap I have to do! The key is, be disciplined in your money. I purposely won't go on CL cause every single time I will find something. Its funny all the things you'll tell yourself so you can go on and check stuff out. I do still browse just incase that way to good of a deal comes around and or if something is gonna get scrapped, I'll try and buy it. Other than that, I know all these parts laying around are gonna be worth something someday so I look at it as an investment, but you need cashflow to finish stuff so its a tricky balance. Then throw in time and space and tools!! lotta variables.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
9-19 Well here is a shot of the rootbeer metallic with some gold in it, way too red looking and dark. So I scuffed it down and remixed some of the original colors I had and came up with this. Much better, I'll know if its a hit when I see it in daylight. I'll continue the color on into the cab. This is just summit's single stage paints. I used SPI epoxy primer and summit's 2k high build.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
9-21 Sunday. Only got a couple hours in today. So here is a pic of the firewall in natural light. I still think its a bit too red. So....I shot my firewall and got the tint I been looking for the whole time. Just needed something with more yellow in it. so I'll prolly reshoot firewall and eventually the rims. Got transmission on finally. Snagged a Hobart 175 off CL, so now I got two 220v welders which is nice incase one goes down.

Right on 99! Is it just the pictures but the firewall and dash is the same colour right? That shade looks awesome on the dash. Looks like you did a great job spraying it.

Hard to believe that dash was sooooo chewed up when you started. Looks great, will look even better with everything back in it. What you gonna do for gauges?

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
9-28 thanks guys. 49' I'm using stock gauges that will be cleaned up and will light up. However, multiple reasons why I'm not using them as functional gauges. I'll have oil, temp, volts on its own gauge on a console I'm making under dash. Air tank pressure, and fuel gauge will be inside the hinged speaker cover on dash. air bag gauges will be on their own. I want to make the speedometer a tach, utilizing the stock look. I'v seen it done and by glance you can hardly notice the numbers.
So I fixed up this nasty inner fender. You can see the slew of parts I had to strip down by hand so I can get some epoxy on them. All these parts will get paint. I have some bottom door rust to fix. I still have to strip other inner fender and doors. Unfortunately I underestimated the time it takes to get this stuff ready for paint and since we have already had some really cold days, I fear missing the window of opportunity to lay some paint. So thats my main goal as of now. Not getting cab on and getting it ready to drive. Though that is still on the list and hopefully I can still drive it by end of Oct. Don't think I ever posted a pic of the gas straps I made. Much beefier than any stock strap, and alot cheaper than to buy them. BTW loving the Hobart welder I got.

Nice repair on the inner fender 99. Did you make a replacement piece or work the ends of the tear together for welding? Heavy duty gas tank straps! Keep going!

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
AD thanks, yeah I put a patch in it on the bottom half, you can see the start of it in this pic. top half I just stitched back. There were a couple other areas that just needed some minor welding. Gonna paint tops and do chassis saver/por15 on bottom, then coat bottoms with hurculiner. I have much better inner fenders, but I used these for moch up, then started trimming them so I just thought I might as well fix these up. I only got an hour into this patch and probably another hour or so into some other fixes and stripping the top half.
I have access to a blaster but its an hour away and I never seem to have enough time to go up and do all that. I blasted some parts on my 52' I'm doing, blasting is nice but still takes a while. Next project I'm hoping to gather all the parts that need blasting and do them all at once, and have another place do the frame.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA
So I missed a couple of questions you guys asked as the thread started out on a new page. So, Iowaboy. the eastwood I have now since they sent me a new one is doing ok, the gas valve got stuck once I noticed, but has been working since. The gas stays on a bit long after you let off trigger. As opposed to the Hobart. I personally have alot more control with the Hobart on the fine sheetmetal. thicker stuff I can't compare the two yet. bottom line I would avoid their migs if possible simple because they are a price point that is hard to beat, but stupid things will break on them. Its caused me enough headache sending one back, getting a new one and the gas valve went out in one weld, so they replaced the valve, but my down time doesn't matter to them. I also don't like their cords. It does weld good though.
Sid, no the dash and firewall are different in the pics. I'v since reshot the firewall. it was just a tad bit too redish gold as is the rims. So it suppose to be more on the yellowish gold with touch of bronze metallic. I'll probably reshoot rims after everything is done. thanks for the comments guys.
