Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

Those tires look pretty beefy back there! I hope you plan on getting steel spacers for it, I would get 2" so you have room to grow...

BTW that wasn't a wallowed out hole, the older budd wheels have the oval hole like that. All of mine were like that and it was fun finding 6 new valve stems like that while in town one day. Good job on closing it up though, I came real close to doing that to mine.

Well for the spacers I have to run a hub centric spacer so that the outside wheel is centered. The only ones I found where 2" and made of steel. They were like $350 a pair tho.

As for the wallowed out hole I am 100% sure that it was wallowed out. For some reason that wheel has a good amount of rust around that area. You can tell something had rubbed on the edges because they where not flat, they tapered to kind of a point on the inside. All my other wheels have a standard size truck valve stem that uses a 5/8 hole on the wheel.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

That wheel was rusted real bad because of water setting in between it and the tube for (who knows how many years) and they put a tube in it because they couldn't find any of those style valve stems. Ask me how I know...

Well fine mr. Smarty pants just playing man. It makes sense but all my other wheels have the standard 5/8s valve stem so idk, maybe that wheel is older or something, I know that the truck sat with that tube in it for 10 years or so. Need to find me some 16.5s!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

This is what it is looking like with 285/75/r16s on the rear and 33x12.5s on the front. I have decided that I am going to box the front part of the frame to the back of the cab. I am doing this because at some point I plan on having more hp and tq so by doing so it will cause less tear on the frame and I have also noticed that the frame does flex quite a bit the way it is. I am not off roading with this truck so limiting the frame movement will not really hurt the truck in any sort of way.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

Well I have a somewhat small update. Oh wait, I mean a big update. Met up with Ryan (DieselWrencher) and finally picked up my motor and trasnfercase. I also got a cracked NV4500 from him that he is letting me borrow it so I can get the mounts made and then I will go get the good transmission from him later.

CUMMINS!

NV4500 and NP205

Still have to find a bell housing for the transmission. I did get an adapter plate from ryan also but we are not 100% sure if it will work or not.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

I'm not real sure in the intercooler but I think i'm gonna use one from a powerstroke, like this I guess: http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-3-powerstr...add61f&vxp=mtr
Ryan will know what fits. A chevy 4 core should be good but I'd try to squeeze a mechanical fan in there first and use electric fans as a last resort.

I think he said that the dodge mechanical fan would not fit on this because it was out of a freightliner, and their fans wont fit into a regular truck.

How far apart are those bolts on the front pulley, will a chevy fan fit on it?

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

you can always get a dodge fan bearing off ebay or something so you can run the dodge fan. I have one from a 92-93 intercooled dodge as they were a little bit shorter, and gave more room for the fan. they are hard to find though usually.

I was told that I would have to get all the dodge brackets for that to work because it moves the belt closer to the motor so all the brackets would have to change.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

Well I picked up some steel monday that was scrap to use to box the frame. Itsf6 pieces of 10" by 5 ft 1/4 in steel. Should be strong enough.

Last night with the help of a couple buddies and my dad we were able to get the cab off of the frame so that i can box the frame easier. Just gotta move some stuff around in the shop and push the frame back in.

As for an update I should have some pictures some time this week with all of the frame boxing pieces all in place. I replaced the front cross member because all the cummins conversions I have seen on these you have to cut the cross member, so I just cut it out and put a new one up toward the front of the frame. Ill be using 4x4x1/4 inch tubing for the cross member for the motor so I dont see a problem with having the front cross member mounted in the very front of the frame.

Yes, if you switch your fan hub for a dodge version, you might as well get the dodge alt brackets too. Because yours won't work with the dodge fan hub.

Nice progress and keep it up man!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

Things have been busy with school so things have not been going as fast as I was hoping but I did get some shop time today.

Got the sleeves for the steering box and got them welded to the frame. Still need to drill out the boxing plate to fit around the sleeves.

Also made a new cross member for the front because the stock one has to be cut up to fit the 12v in so I decided to make a new cross member so that I can try to mount the motor lower in the frame some.

Got more plates tacked in the frame. Getting close!

That is all for this update. Hoping to get the frame done the next time I get to work on the truck. Then it will be time to put the cab back on and start making the mounts for the motor.
