Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

trying to be patient waiting on body work to get done, Paid for the Allison trans rebuild today and ordered a few more things like the remainder of the arp bolts for the frame and parts, ordered the class 5 hitch assembly. Friday I am going to drop the axle off for strip down and rebuild with 3.73 gearing, Also drop by the machining company in Olympia and start the process to get more of the disc brake plates made and see what they think the best material will be to use. Luckily one of their design people used to make nascar parts so may have some good input on the critters I started several years ago will be coming to a final build for other that may want them on their trucks

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well the body repair is coming along nicely should be getting painted parts back soon. Also went a on a lil spending spree and got a few more things off the purchasing list and more stuff coming in next week . Found a nice spindle lock kit that will work on my dana so I don't have deal with them pia locking collars they used on them originally. Also got hp tuners in and will be tinkering with that here in the near future when the bench harness is totally completed.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well the spindle lock setup didn't work on my 64 dana axle :/ so shipped it back to jegs and sent and email to the company that made it "they said oh yeah it will work just fine!!! yeah right!!!! Also got parts rolling in left n right while waiting on body work and finishing a friends truck repairs so tickled... vent windows, spare tire carrier, class 5 hitch setup, and a dirt cheap brand new mefi4/5 harness for the 8.1 (not sure yet what I am doing with that one but for a 100$ I wasn't gonna say no the frikkin relays on this thing are huge!!
The quality on the repop vent windows looks pretty good but will know for sure once they are installed in the doors of the truck and can give a full report on them best price on them is about 438 shipped I have found. Also the massive beast of a hitch 70 lbs worth. Need to get this other truck out of my hair so I can clamp this to the frame and start getting the holes lined up/drilled not sure what that's going to need just yet uses 9/16th bolts through the frame lol..

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

next on the list I have been being patient and thinking how to get a good spare tire hoist under my truck well I hate to say it f*** made the perfect setup for my truck I am just repurposing what they did to work in my truck. I removed the security lock with a screw driver and a 3/8 drive extension fits in the slot perfectly with a just a lil side to side maneuverability. and best thing is its 23 or so inches long.. the last two rear frame braces in the 64 are 22.5 inches apart front to back so will be clamping it to the frame mark the holes and bolt it in place once the holes are dilled!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

and last but not least another wiring harness to play with hehe.... Looking at an idea to mount the trans, ecm, and tac module on the engine and make some covers for them so far not quite happy with how the places I have them currently mounted in look. Looks sloppy to me so going to give it a whirl and see what I can do with it should have them marine computer mounting brackets in next week. Plus a guy in my 8.1 group is trading me out a modified 8.1 factory manifold for my oddball one that only has one threaded vacuum port on it where apparently most of them have 2??!!??
Hoping another 2 weeks I can get my coworkers truck buttoned up and out of my hair got lots to do and never enough time anymore :/

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

well got the marine harness all apart and new pcm connectors for the 8.1 computer along with a set of marine engine computer mounting brackets to play with so far the test fit looks really good going to have to fab up some lower braces for both sides and move and redrill the holes for the tcm a lil bit but I will be able to mount the tac module Allison tcm and 8.1 engine computer on top of the engine.. Lil work with some abs and will compliment the mercruiser cover quite nicely! love trial and error projects since I learn so much from them

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Got the braces fabbed and completed just need to paint them soon when I get the engine cleaned and ready for painting. Next up when the Allison comes back home will be to mount the wiring harness in place and shorten all of the wires down to fit the new configuration may have to make a few longer leads for the firewall plug in but have the wire making that and easy task .. Once that is all done will be time to make the abs covers for both sides of the engine.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

the replacement dana 60 axle is in the shop getting rebuilt picked up the housing from the powder coaters the other day should have it finished mid February and have it back in place so I can move the frame around as needed. Also started the final rework and build on the fuel injection harness setup still have a ways to go with it but coming along nicely. Body guy is taking his time so right now can plan things out and not have to rush anything

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

spare tire hoist is in place and working beautifully plenty of space for the trie to mount up without any clearance issues just need a longer 3/8 ratchet extension to clear the edge of the tire now and another project fully complete. Still waiting on the body guy to get along further he got all the patching done on the cab so soon will be getting body parts home and have to start building assembly frames to put things together on the bed.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

have not got a whole heck of a lot done been working lots of hours to pay for things lol. I did get hp tuners and my bench harness up and working today also got the interior fuse box labeling done today. Dropped the springs off to have the 2ndary rate spring pack put back in them ( last owner removed them for ride comfort :/ ) Will be picking up the axle this weekend as it is finished and ready to put back in next up experimenting with electric window motors out of an astro van lol will see if it is a strong enough motor for my idea to play with lol
Body parts should start rolling in in the next few weeks which means an unhappy mother in law since the other half of the garage is where there going! also once the frame is rolling again taking it by the pressure washer and getting it cleaned up lol

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well axle should be home next week from the rebuilder turning out very nice, Also got the second stage added back into my factory leaf spring the previous owner had removed to make the ride softer. Along with that the new differential cover came in and man is it nice!!! drain plug and dip sticks with an o ring seal on it. Plus heheheheh been playing with the spare tire hoist lol wait till ya see the video hehehehe!!!!!! Thanks to the UNT graduate mechanical engineering student for the Idea! Will post a youtube link in the next post works beautifully no major strain to lift the tire into place! I will however need to get another motor and have the gear machined to fit the tire hoist crank mechanism properly I didn't get it quite right lol the motor wobbled while lifting the tire rotflmao!!!!

Those differential covers are quite nice but sure are spendy!

It's nice to have a powered spare tire mount, but hopefully you don't need it that often.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Captainfab I probably wont need it that often but nice to have when I do lol still in the planning stages on it since I need to get all three parts to a machinist to machine the gear so it doesn't wobble inside the spare tire crank mechanism lol. already sourced a suburban window switch for inside the cab to mount in the center console someplace to lift and lower it The diff cover since I am going to be a significant amount of towing was a no brainer it carries an extra quart of diff lube so will help keep the differential a lot cooler and at 225$ for it I wasn't complaining. The G2 and the mag hytec covers are the only ones that have the o ring seal on them as I have been able to find

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well got the second stage put back in the leaf spring assemblies and back on the truck still have to bolt them in place seems I am missing a few of the thickened grade 8 washers from them so a nice trip to ace hardware tomorrow it seems. Also been working on the harness yet again for the engine and transmission. I had a major miscalculation when putting the harness together on the engine I forgot to make the fuel rails were in place so all the work I did went right out the window :/ oh well lesson learned lol :P Luckily I was doing my usual ebay perusal and stumbled across a shop in dallas that managed to buy up a bunch of new in box e38 computer harness assemblies from the 14 model vans. Picked one up for 175$ and am using it for the rework of the rework has almost all the proper connections for the 8.1 engine plus the trans harness wiring will crossover to a slight degree. I have to add about 10 wires into the harness to get it to the Allison setup. noticeable difference between the 06 harness flexibility and the new e38 one the 06 harness was pretty crispy..... but I have them almost all completed and ready for when I get my intake back from a friend. I sent the intake off for the modification of the air intake path so will get better breathing out of it should have it back next month along with the Allison. Once that all comes together I can drop this thing in the frame and get the engine trans harness layed out properly this time and start working on a set of exhaust manifolds for the engine that will clear the frame rails. May have to do the mod I have seen Captnfab mention in several threads from my research on here.

Here are some pictures ENJOY!!!!

Damn, and I thought the Moser aluminum diff covers looked nice. That thing is a piece of freaking art! Looks beastly.

Killer looking cover but don't envy you one bit on figuring out all those wires.
Can't wait to see the motor dropped in.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well apparently that nice looking diff cover turned out to be a bust it fits f250 super duties only grrrrr!!!!! Got into an argument with the parts company that sold it too me they swear it will fit rotflmao.. My response yeah it will fit if you make a 1/2 inch spacer to go between it and the mounting flange :/ So went through amazon and disputed the sale since they refused to reply about a return and got my money back and apparently get to keep the dammed cover lol think will try and resell if and if not hang on my wall as a reminder to call the company first lol. Went ahead and spent the extra money and bought the mag hytec version and it definitely fits. Come to find out the dana 60 70 and 80 axles all use the same cover.... also go the axle in place but forgot to get the correct length u bolts rothflmao so have to go the spring company and get some new ones made up that are 1.5 inches longer now. Once that turkey is bolted in can roll the frame out side and pressure wash it. Then comes time to start getting the engine and transmission ready to drop in and start the brake and fuel line getting done. Wiring harness is as far as I can get it till I get all my parts in hand on the engine should have the improved intake manifold back next week some time so ready. next month or too will be getting the body parts back as well and can start building an a frame to lift the cab back on the chassis. Also sent out the parts to my machinist friend in dallas to build the motor adapter plate for the hoist mechanism so that is another thing off the list few more to go and get this thing aligned and ready to drive got lots of parts to get broken in so going to be going easy on it for awhile
