I'm working at getting mine road legal Today I took the big wire wheel to the cross sills. Primed and painted them with the help of a heat gun. The bed risers are from my scrap pile. I cut to size, drilled a hole, and welded the 3/8 - 16 nut on them. It was quick and easy and will look better once some bed wood is on. The cross sills were pitted in some places as you can see. You won't see them either. My bed sides and front panel look like they have been in a train wreck. At this point I don't care. Most of it will be covered by the fender and fleetside wheel house for tubs. I will build a new bed or find a better one later. Now I can practice on this one. My original bed was a long bed and it is on a trailer frame waiting it's turn. I am having trouble getting the headlight switch out. Pushed the button on top and got the knob and shaft out, but I can't seem to get the bezel off. Maybe an M-80? Don't look at my fuel hose it was all I could find. I'll go to Goodyear and get the real stuff soon enough. That is if they are still there. . |

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
Got the risers tacked on the chassis and the cross-sills bolted on.
The bolts that hold the cross-sills will be hidden by the bed strips. Also screwed the angles on and it almost straightened the bed sides almost... Forgot to place some wood between the angles and the cross-sills. More holes to fill. Bolted on a fender (ugly) to check tire clearance. I got the bezel off of the headlight switch. Sprayed a little penetrating oil on it and then hit it with a small ball peen hammer. Didn't leave a mark. I like the way the rear is sitting now. Hope it doesn't drop much once the tailgate and wood and bumper goes on. Still need to raise the fuel tank about 4". . |

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
Last Wednesday and Thursday I stripped the bedsides, front panel, and rear sill.
Got some primer on all the pieces with the help of a heat gun. Pounded on the front panel and bedsides with a big hammer and 2X4 to straighten them up a little. Tried to get smaller dents with hammer and dolly. Metal doesn't want to move in cold weather. A friend that owns a cabinet shop has some bed wood for me. He thought he had enough white oak but I had to settle for Sapele. I cut off the risers I had tacked on. Changed the way the cross sills bolt to the risers. It will make removing the bed easier (for me anyway). . |

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
Here's a little patina for you. Thought this one may have been a wrap but it's air brushed. "Swamp Thing" Pro Mod - google it for more pics.

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
Never heard of a patina wrap.
They can do just about anything with wrap so why not patina. Got the new risers welded on the chassis last weekend. I messed up on the cross sill alignment so I had to correct that before I could continue. Made an adjustment to the bolt holes. You know what they say "Hurry up and **** up. The rain let up today so I got started stripping the steps. I don't like to strip paint and rust inside the shop. |

real "patina" is actually turquoise in color, but lets not start that conversation on Jims page - I was only joking about the Patina Wrap - I dont really like the turquoise color at all.... maybe back in 1970 it was ok, - but not today. Jim are you painting yours or just leaving it rat rod for now? I think thats what Im doing for the first year - I just want to drive it!

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
I was going to drive it as is, but since I painted the bed with red primer the cab and front clip might get painted red primer also.
Seems that a lot of trucks are primed in black or grey. JJ's truck looks good in red primer. Most likely I will wait until summer to paint the cab and front clip. Still undecided on a color. No metal flake. Original color was yellow. I want to drive this thing! . |

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
Yesterday I cut the bottom 3 inches off the front panel.
I flipped it so the angle would be under the wood but you wouldn't see where it was welded back on. Also installed temporarily the new bed angles with self taping screws. I will secure them with button head screws later. Don't want to weld them permanently to these beat up bead sides. Today I finished stripping the steps and primed them and the bed angles. Also did some metal repair on the tailgate. Still need to strip it and prime it. Started prepping the roof of the cab for primer. Just a little surface rust so far. I should pickup the bed wood this week. Is there a reason why the bed wood has narrow pieces next to the bedside angle? The only thing I'm going to be hauling is a** and sailboat fuel. I have laid mine out evenly with each board being 6 3/4". |

I hear that you need a special permit from the EPA or the Army Corp. of Engineers to haul "sailboat fuel", Herd tell it's very toxic! Build looks good Keep on keepin on NC

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
Thanks guys!
Nut Case the sailboat fuel where I live isn't too bad. L.A. has the toxic sailboat fuel. Installed the passenger side step and an ugly fender. I had to cut the step support and extend it 4 3/4" because of the raised bed. Tomorrow the fender will be removed and stripped and primed. I might try to beat some of the ugly out of it while it is off. |

Re: Roadkill's 58 Chevy Stepside
Picked up my bed wood this morning before the rain hit.
No finish or milling yet. Because nothing is stock on the bed I wanted to mock it up before doing anything. The cross sills in the front and rear are the only ones in the stock position. The other two I spaced on each side of the wheel so I could tub the bedsides without the cross sills interfering. Then there is the board width. I will have to drill new holes in the cross sills. . |
