Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

O man I don’t know if I put up any photos of the 2nd and 3rd row benches I got. Out of a 65 suburban, the full bench was used and in rough but very usable shape but the 2nd row was hardly used and stored in the garage so it’s mint!

Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

I have some more progress to report, a few weeks worth. I keep getting a error message every time I try and upload photos. It’s saying that I am missing a security token. And contact the administrator. No response yet. Any help would be appreciated

Just about wrapped up the quarter panels!

You need to resize your picvtures. The are too large for a non administrator to load up.

Thanks Bill, I’ll have to give it a try. It seemed to be working for a while with the photos straight from my phone. It started happening after my post with the bench seat

Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

Here are the suburbans I have been getting parts from. The one up front is a 66 and the one in the back is a 60 or 61. Thanks Brad!! Don’t ask, he’s not selling them, just parting out. I was able to get the back corner off the 66 so I could have the stock reverse light hole placement figures and transfer it to the other side

Here is a few more. Cleaned up that rear corner, worse then I was hoping. Ended up being pretty rotten and that all was hidden under a half inch of bondo. Got it patched up and fitted

Thanks Nik! Want to drive it bad, but want it solid and safe first...

Well I’m all but positive this will be putting a damper on this build progress.

Welcome my new baby girl!

Thanks Nik! Isla has been amazing! Pretty awesome little girl.

Got out to the shop for a few hours last Sunday. Finished up the metal work on the passengers side quarter finally Just need to get some warmer weather and I can lay down some epoxy primer and paint.

Spent some time messing around with the speaker cover design. Got this fabricated and like the design. Putting 2 together for the 6x9’s and 2 for the 4”. Trying to go with the same theme for the build. Modern parts with the era look. Took some beauty fabric the wife picked up and wrapped it around the frames I cut out and trimmed it with some wood veneer. Running the Alpine SPS-619 and the SPS-410

Thanks Paul! Have been having lots of fun learning to be a dad.

Getting things checked off the list here and there.

Now that the quarter panels are finished off I have been moving forward with other parts of the truck.

Got the last wood floor support in and most of the body mounts installed. The wiring to the tail lights reverse lights and plate light are just about cleaned up. Filled the holes for what may have been for a stove pipe on the passengers side. Finished filling all the holes in the fire wall, installed the dome light mount I picked off that parts suburban and repaired the hood around the front where the hood bumper rubber mounts up. Lots of little things but it is really coming together.

Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

Started working on the passengers side of the hood as there wasn’t much left, got that figured. Then had a look at the drivers side and saw a few small cracks. Further investigation revealed that the metal was all pushed up under the old bumper and the metal was quite thin. A few more patches on that side as well

Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

Hey Guys,

Been pretty quiet on my end, just healing up after some surgery before Christmas. As per usual, I always find something to work on.... so I did some light duty stuff. Managed to finish up my custom speaker covers, not to much but it’s another item checked off the list. Pretty happy how they turned out. 2 for the 6x9” Alpines and 2 for the 4” Alpines. Still figuring on where I want to place the speakers, I am thinking of putting the 6x9”s behind the front seat, where the PO had installed some 4” speakers, will be a proper install this time! I am thinking of putting the 4” speakers, either in the doors or kick panels, I am a little apprehensive about putting the speakers in the doors due to there not being A proper flush spot to mount to and then running wires into the doors. What do you guys figure, doors or kick panels?

Cheers,

Anthony

Thanks Bill! Digging your new rig! I have been daily driving a 97 GMC squarebody for the last while, ever since I took the 1992 Dodge doner truck of the road for the Panel.

Some progress this weekend!

Cut out some backing plates out of some 1/4” stainless plate for all of the rear body mounts and bolted them in nic and beefy now. The. Moved on to installing the door jam switches for the dome light, took some 1/4” by 2” steel flat bar, drilled and tapped the hole for the switch, cut a hole in the door jam l, ran the wiring into the cab and welded it in. Did one on both sides.

Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

Been working on the cab wiring harness here and there. Finally got some time to reall get it fitted. Mounted the fuse panel on the kick panel below the dash. I also did some dry fitting of the Old Air Heater I picked up over the summer. I spent some time running the wiring for the rear speakers and some light. Really had me thinking of what to do. I’m not putting in carpets, at least for the foreseeable future, so no where to hide the wiring loom and I didn’t want to run it back outside the cab, so this is what I came up with. 3/4” copper pipe soldered together then the wiring ran up the b piler. I think it looks pretty funky. I need to install the transfer case shifter in the trans tunnel cover, figure out my parking break, finish putting in a few more bolts for the top piece of the trans cover and figure on a place and install the front 4” speakers then I can spray some epoxy and the lizard skin sound deadner.

Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

Here’s a few more.

Also figured out my grounding issue for the headlight switch and got to incorporate some more of that black walnut! I figured I will be going with the original panel side saddle fuel tank for now, it’s 66 litres which is not ideal, I figure I can get it reconditioned and fitted with the Dodge sending unit for less then getting a custom tank made and mounted. That’s it for now

Thanks for tunning in,

Anthony

Re: 1963 GMC C30 panel truck

Bit of an update.

I have been reworking the stock side saddle fuel tank for the panel. I want to re-use the Dodge sending unit, filler neck and fuel over fill systems. This means more fab work and custom fitting. I began by welding some 3/8 nuts on the tank mounting straps, to replace the loss nut and bolt configuration, to make the tank easier to bolt in and out. I cut up the plastic Dodge tank, taking out the area where the sending unit mounts and drilled a bunch of holes and installed rivnuts, I will seal in between the the two pieces after I get some POR on the outside of the tank. I reworked and spliced together a filler neck that will fit the stock mounting location, made a plate to bolt up by the fuel door and welded it to the filler neck. Then I could figure the length of overflow hose needed and where the hose will hook up to the tank. Needed to get all the cutting done on the tank before I take it down to a radiator shop to be boiled and resealed. I really wanted to have a tank set up with a larger fuel capacity, I approximate that the stock one holds 66 litres. I want to get the truck rolling and using the tank that I have saves me loads of cash over having a custom one built. I figure I will look into getting a second tank in, but that will be down the road. I will need to shorten the sending unit to make it fit, a few bits here and there to do on tank and it will be done.

More to come,

Anthony
