Looked good. I'm looking to get another late 80's D50 soon to work on. Throw a new frame under it and a small block. I have a 4l60e that needs a rebuild I can use too.

phantom dually. what frame is that you are building. i mean is it a 196? or 197? frame. is it a pickup or suburban frame. the reason i ask is i am trying to get weight down and the pictures you have shown, show that you have a light weight front crossmember. just wandered what it was out of so i can get one. not sure if i just want to remove it completely but like the looks of yours. thanks andrew

The frame is for a 83 chevy 1/2 ton LWB truck. I am building it into a slammed PHANTOM DUALLY w 33x21.50 MT on the rear. The bed will be 4" from the ground at the rear!! The member is a modified stock piece. All parts come from Bill Turner in California. you can find his info in this post. Beware!!! I hope your not in a hurry!

Looks awesome. Still haven't got a chance to work on my 76 any. Been working on a 1990 extended cab I got just for a daily driver.

I still plan on simply making a new tranny X-member and slightly shimming up the front of my cab with some shortened body mounts. Shouldn't need any tranny hump (cabfloor) mods at all and will still come within 1/4-1/2" from laying body in the front on 27" tires.

crossmember

Dropped my crossmember 1.5" today. It was very easy using Captkaos' method. Fit back in the frame perfect, just gotta finish bolting it up and paint everything. Thanks to the info in this post and on Capt's website. Thanks

i was flipping through some of my old mags today and came accross this sweet ride. It doesn't say alot in the article, but it does say it has a modified x-member. If this is how low i could be with a raised front crossmember then i am for sure gonna do it now! SWEET!

Hey slammed I have that mag but not sure which edition it is. I also doubt that it is as low as the crossmember drop will get you. I had mine that low with hydros in the front. You can go lower depending upon what hits first the crossmember or arms. I laid my truck down with wheels the other night and the small part on the front cab mounts which holds the E brake cables kept it fron laying frame. Time to cut the mounts!!

Hey Phantom and everyone else. This is my first post on the board, and this is the only thread I've looked at, but I've been watching it from the beginning. This a great thread with great info.
Well, my bro has a 69 C10 and we bought the kit from Turner's about the same time that you started the thread. It's been a slow process, but it is starting to come together. My brother went with the standard notch on the x-mbr so he wouldn't have any problems with modifying the steering...but things didn't work as planned, as most of you know. He's on a tight budget as most of us are, so having to switch to a rack was an unpleasant surpise. I donated my rack off my Nova (it's a MII rack) so we can get this truck up and running soon. What I wanted to ask about your newest pics phantom, is that exactly how your motor is going to be mounted? It doesn't seem like it because there doesn't seem to be room for a pan or balancer. My brother also got the motor mounts from Bill, but we had to put in a 1/2" plate underneath it to raise the motor to clear the rack. We had the same prob as you with the shaft coming too close to the mount as well, but we just tilted the rack so the shaft went above the mount to clear it. Here's a pic of what it looks like.

I actually sent my rack back to Flaming River and had a 1 1/2" shaft put in. I also have added a pan since the pics and will have no issues. Also my balancer will clear as the rack sits in between the pan and the balancer . The balancer on a BBC may sit out further so this may be a issue with a SBC?? I plan to move the engine forward on the mount pad as much as possible. I do not want to run into distributor probs. Post us a few more pics of the project. It looks great!! As far as dealing with Bill Turner I am sure you have read my opinion on this post. It all started great but eventually for some reason he would NEVER return my calls?? I may have to space the rack out a bit at the mounts but I will do this with some solid tubing or something to get in in between the pan and balancer.

Ahh, I see. I didn't realize that the rack is actually infront of the motor. That's going to work out nice then. Are you going to run a short style pump as well? I ask that because of the pulleys coming off of the balancer. But that can be taken care of with the spacers.
The part with Bill is the same as my brother. From what I heard, he was a great guy at first, then just started taking too long and not returning any calls. We still have a bag with no threads, and a set of notches that need to be returned, but are scared that if we send them back, we'll never get new ones!
Yeah, I'll be over his house this weekend to take some new pics and get some more stuff done. We have it all mostly painted since the pic above. Just rattle cans with flat and gloss black, but it came out real nice. We haven't touched the rear yet, and hoping to get to that point this coming week. Here's just a pic of the whole front end. It's got the jack underneath it still, but with it out, the x-mbr sits on the floor, but I'll get some pics of that this weekend.

Here are a few updated pics with the oil pan and new shaft on the rack. It is close but should clear. I may have to space the rack forward but it should not be a prob.

I can see from pic 3 that you have more than enough room, I guess it was just the angle of the previous pic. That thing is going to look MEAN with a BBC in there! That short shaft worked out well for you it looks like too.
Yeah, it's coming together, slowly but surely. I just hope the rear goes smooth. I'll be sure to get the side view this weekend, as well as others.
This has nothing to do with the truck, but it's a link to my project:

get layed

Got mine front back together yesterday took a few days w/ all the painting. Painted a-arms body color, frame hammertone silver, and a few brackets etc. flat black. The sway bars front mounts are layed on the ground. Took the rear wheels off and let the jack down, drive shaft crossmember hit the ground and the pinch wells were about 1" off the ground. Should lay hard once I relocate crossmembers and bag the back. Started cutting out all the rear wood floor and tubs this afternoon. By the way this is on a '72 Suburban w/ 20's, 1.5" crossmember drop(Capt's way), 2.5" spindles, and 2600# bags w/ just the upper plates. Will post some pics as soon as I get them. Later
