Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Pimpston65 saw the state of my ashtray front recently and then sent me a perfect one from his personal collection, refusing any payment.

Thank you very much mate. Hopefully I can pay it forward soon.

NOT SURE, BUT IT SEEMS THE SYSTEM IS TURNING PHOTOS UPSIDE DOWN AGAIN FOR NO REASON.... GRRRRRRRR!!

Also came home to another A4 Manila envelope today, opening it and expecting some drivel from work, I was pleasantly surprised to find two copies of the original electrical wiring diagram for the truck for Martin and I from Kerry "Disasterbus"

Going to be useful when the truck gets its new EZ wiring harness.
!

I started to look at fitting the Mercedes Benz tow bar to the truck when the new 67-72 rear bumper arrives.

I just need to either find out, or figure out what the spacing is from the body to the bumper, and also the spacing of the mounting bolts so that I can create the new mounting bracket incorporating the tow hitch.

I also want to weld in a US style square receiver for a removable tow hitch.

This is what I currently have.

Chilly again tonight, around 3'C, clearly nothing compared to other parts of the country and world.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Being my Birthday today, Nicola my sensible, sensitive caring type wife, gave me the day off for truck stuff.

Went down to Deptford in South East London to buy my white for the two tone the truck will be getting on its roof and the side flash.

I have really had a problem with choosing the white.

I wanted something traditional, like an Ivory or Old English White but it also needed to "pop" a bit against the Chrysler red I already have, without being a glacier white or pearlescent white.

In the end I chose an older Mercedes Benz Alaska White Variant Y which I trust will make me happy once on.

Weird colours mixed to get there, included Red Oxide, Blue, Yellow.

Yesterday I swapped out my headlights for some Hella H4's that board member theastronaut recommended. Wow, what a difference. I just used the 55/60W bulb that came with it, and it is amazing. Highly recommend putting this upgrade into your budget.

I took the guts out of an old 60s tach and put new guts from a newer tach in it, turned out pretty good.

Scored new rubber! 225/70/15's to go on some original 6 lug steel wheels. Going to wire wheel, prime and paint, then take the rubber and wheels to a shop for mounting and balancing.

Cleaned up the garage.. It was a MESS! I swept up several grinding and cutoff wheels

Here she sits for now. Slowly getting there one patch panel at a time, one part at a time, an hour here and there between work and family. Some day!

That was easy, 2nd side on. Now to get some antiseize for rack coupler, show in 45 min, time for chow. I would put tires on but need a minion to help move clip out of the way.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Finally finished the last of the wiring of the turn signals, man what a pain to learn to convert the new wiring harness over to the OEM turn signal switch, another member as well as Mark Brazelton helped me figure out the last of the hangings. I still have to tie the horn in and send the radio off for the iPod upgrade, but it's getting real close.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

I want to be able to park my car in the garage this winter. My options were to either drag all the parts, including the fenders and steps, down into the basement, or bolt them onto the truck. I went with the later.

And they really make a difference, even if the fenders are the wrong color currently.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Added the optional seat belt hooks to the rear pillar, these hang the male part of the seat belt so they do not fall out of the door and drag on the ground.
A 55-59 Chevy coat hook is what was recommended a stainless steel screw.

Cut and grounded frame /transmission crossmember. Can't weld... weld alot. That seems what my frame got from factory. Patched floor and new tunnels.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Came home Friday night and the neighbor brought around a parcel.

Contents........

Bumper bolts, welding clamps I had ordered and apple licorice from Ta2Don.

Last week Martin climbed into a large skip and like a circus monkey, hanging on one side with one hand, he managed to retrieve this heavy duty towbar, possibly Jeep Cherokee.
So last night I dismantled it, as it is a heavy old thing.

Once more the rattle gun paid for itself on all the rusted bolts and nuts.

Along with the A-Class Mercedes Benz towbar which together will be making a new removable towbar and fitting points for bumper mounts for the new rear bumper.

Next up, I bolted the side plates to the chassis, cut the end plates off both towbars and fitted the Merc one between the Jeep items.

Grinding the parts clean for welding, I set my welder on higher power and feed.

The Mercedes parts ball fitting tabs were left on till I have finished making the slip on/in removable parts, then it will be welded on to the original chassis support along with tabs to bolt it to the Merc cross bar.

Got to welding the corners to the new side tabs, but my welder melted its tips, twice...... and the thread on the tip is screwed, so I pulled the plug on the welding.

Seems I need to figure out the settings a bit more and replace the torch as it is a bit knackered.

Last thing. Today I fitted the pair of Sinclair stickers Grunty made for me years ago for the Taunus Transit, to the Caravan Shed.

Especially for ClemDaddy, who for those who do not know, lives in a 1940's Sinclair Service station.

TAKE A LOOK AT: www.tubatrucks.com to see the perfect home.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Despite the damp and miserable English winter weather I took the truck up to a small local meet at Krispy Kreme's drive through. There were some nice vehicles there today despite the weather......

then came back and did a few jobs on my truck (with no help at all from Henry the Basset Hound)

Thanks for posting up Disasterbus, always good to see cars out, despite the weather.

The hound seems very happy to be along for the ride.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Opened the passenger door to let the dog in and noticed my gas spill is getting bigger. Today will be the day I plumb in the new tank. Also after we left the beach my headlights would not turn on. Either the radiator support plug or the switch is bad. I had trouble turning them on before and I guess I should have taken care of it then. I just drove home with the parking lights on.

Motivation Mondays! Got bags aired up, truck off jack and on ground. Bumper on. Apparently at 5 inches at cab mount is ride height.

I saved some cash ( cob) and fixed my rattling doors.
I used the 2006 honda civic coup trick found on this site.
Thanks to the poster of that thread.
