Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Just ordered up a new Hayes H.D. clutch kit. Researching flywheels now. Not sure what flywheel I need to swap in the 383 stroker to my 465 manual transmission?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Got a Hayes super brute 12" clutch kit p/n 490-90-102 coming from JEGS. After researching the flywheel needed for the 383 swap, I just ordered a SBC400 flywheel for the manual transmission with external weights p/n FW102 from Northern auto parts. Hope this will be the right combo? I am really in the dark here, anybody got any thoughts on this swap?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

No help here, but kind of an interesting story. My Dad is friends with Bill Hayes, the original owner of Hayes clutches. Neat old guy. He sold off Hayes clutches long ago to some other company then founded Centerforce Clutches which his kids run now. He's in his 80's but still tinkering and inventing new stuff. A little off subject but a little history for you on Hayes clutches.

Cool story DB! Got the hayes clutch kit today, looks real nice. Flywheel should be here tommmorrow. Anybody else running a 383 stroker with a 465 manual trans?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Allright, I have come to a crossroads on this 383 buildup. It is not top priority right now, just trying to figure out what I need to do. Got the clutch kit today as stated, and new flywheel tommorrow. After doing research on 383 motors, I am going to have this entire motor tore down before buying any more parts. The "friend" I bought it from failed to provide any build documents, so I really do not know what has been done. I need to determine what I actually have here, and what it will take to balance everything right! When motor was pulled from his corvette, it ran good but had some top end noise problems. Sounds like it was not set up right in the first place. Might as well start from the machine shop and do it right this time! Gonna get with my partner from work and start to dissect this stroker!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Well I just ordered up a engine stand so I can pull the pan off. Get the numbers off the crankshaft so I can ID it. That will tell me what Scat crank it is, and I can go from there. Sounds like a plan to me?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Engine stand came today! Now I just have to put it together. Thinking about getting a cherry picker next to aid in moving the motor, and swapping them around.

Weather is getting better here. Snow and ice almost all gone in front of pole barn door! John has been in the shop lately, so it won't be long before I fire the K5 up and get going!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Anybody got some pic's of the seals for the top to bedside seals?Double wall vs single wall would be great. Double wall top here, but single wall pic's would help also. Bought a set from a member here, and just want to make sure they are for a double wall top. These came from Brothers P/N 617618. Mine never had any seals there when I removed the top way back once, so I used a 1 sided sticky 1/4" thick x 1" wide rv tape. Didn't really work ! I want it right the next time I do it. Thank's!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Thank's VA! I am really stoked about getting started on this, and my friend John is the key here. He has time on his hands right now and just really wants to help me get my K5 wheeling again. I have gathered up a lot of parts getting ready for this, and now is the time to get going on stage 4! I will post up some pic's asap!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Rainy day here, spent some time indoors working on K5 parts. Reworked a pair of visors I picked up from Sharpie a while back. Visors were in good shape, but one had some issues, fixed. Original visors are still there, but these replacements are way better! A little glue, some paint, armour all, and 43 year old stuff looks real good again!

T-case painted, semi-gloss black, adapter also. Gonna leave the aluminum frt and rear output housings and the rear aluminum cover that way. Looking good, get some pic's asap. John said tommorrow is the day to start tearing out the original axles! YES!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Ripping has begun today! The Dana44 frt axle is out. Also removed the front leaf spring upper bushings and brackets to make way for ORD's FUSH kit. While we were at it took out the stock front spring bump stops, which where useless anyway. Got a lot done in about 4 hours this afternoon. Pulled the 1972 4x4 steering power steering box off, making way for the rebuilt Brothers quick ratio 2wd box. Also completely rebuilt the steering rag joint to go back in. Wow! Pumped to see some actual progress! Here's some pic's!Name: 100_0315.jpg

Thank's Turp. Things are looking up here, starting to make some progress, taking advantage of Johns time off. Should make some major advances by the end of the week. Have a bunch of parts stashed for this ready to go. Thank's guy's!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Good day today! Dana60 is under the front of my K5! New steering box with rebuilt rag joint installed. Crossover with high steer mocked up and ready to finish welding the DOM pieces. ORD's Fush kits installed for the front upper spring bushings. Just need to weld on the driver side spring mount to the axle housing and tighten down the u-bolts! Very happy, John really got a lot done today and it is looking really good! Here's some pic's!Name: 100_0322.jpg

You say you have to weld on the driver side spring pad? Did you have to replace yours? If so where did you get the replacement?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Thank's VA! Litebulb, I think I got it from DIY, But I'll check my records. Way pumped on getting going on this! John is really ripping on my project the last couple of days, wanting to get it be a rolling chassis again! This is what I have been waiting for a real long time!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!

Yes, liteb, I got the dana60 single front spring perch from DIY4X. Back in 012 it ran me about $26.00 shipped. Yes, John cut the original mount off, and getting ready to mount the new one exactly where it needs to be for my 8" superlift front springs.
