Re: 72 k20 project

Nice work, I look forward to seeing your rear suspension. On mine I'm planning ultra cheap but heavy duty. Heavy duty semi trailer trailing arms with huge 1" bolts and I might use schedule 80 pipe. I have 4 new air bags from a trailer I purchased years ago. We'll see when if I get to this any time soon.

Re: 72 k20 project

i will recommend to stay away from pipe. it isnt built to withstand forces the same way as mechanical tubing. i can imagine the trailing arms will be more than enough, that **** is manly.

i need to order the bags, and ill have to build some dummy links until i get my ends, but i got a start. hope to put in a little time after work each night. tonight was burning out the parts. tomorrow is some bending and maybe a little welding. you can see my idea for weld washes in the pic. i still need to punch the holes. i prefer to use the ironworker for bolt holes so they are right on. we can scribe locate the holes on the plasma table so they are in the right spot too.

Re: 72 k20 project

The base material is .250" and the weld on parts are 10ga. total thickness at the stress area will be over 3/8"

Re: 72 k20 project

Man that is a lot of welding you have to look forward too! That thing will be over the top! By the way, "weld washes"? What is that? The double thick parts that hold a load?

Re: 72 k20 project

Weld washers are just metal welded over the bolt hole to add more material for the bolt to act against. helps keep the holes from getting ovaled. i just had to go all ritzy for mine. i had considered using a normal style stepped weld washer and 3/16" material. my need for adding weight bled through and i did the thicker material and cut out stuff.

got it all bent up and all the holes punched. tomorrow, Weld.

Re: 72 k20 project

sort of mocked up. as always, there are hurdles i figured id have to whack the body mount. so it was. but now i am considering longer links. not that its really neccesary, but since i had to whack the body mount, i have a little freedom to move a bit. i doubt i do since i will be lowering the AS of the geometry the further i move it forward. also, i loosened the bends up a little with my welding so i need to tweak those a little before it can be welded up. oops. i didnt even think about checking it before i left work friday. i may be able to borrow a buddies press tomorrow to fix them, otherwise its waiting till monday.

Re: 72 k20 project

i cut a few 1"x.120" sleeves to use as spacers when it all gets welded. i faced them to get them all square and equal length.

got all the brackets in order, tacked the inside on, and measured for the access hole for the body mount. now i have to cut the hole...

Re: 72 k20 project

And Josh, i am not sure how the geometry will work on a lower truck. you had planned to do a 2wd right? i saw your wedge for sale, so maybe you are gonna do a 4x?

it may not be all that reasonable on a 2wd with my heights and angles. i am pretty sure ryan will be OK since he and i are close to the same in height. his is a little longer, but that will be no big deal on the AS. in fact, he may be a little taller an that would help bring it back to the sameish
