Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
Last night, I put the 2nd reman steering box on it. The Lares unit was junk and I voided the warranty trying to fix it... So NAPA took it as a core and I put a NAPA box in it.
Also added spark plug wire boots to it and got the steering stabilizer bolted on & 90% there.

New weather striping on passenger door, new latches and strikes, will get to driver door tomorrow, wife willing. Look at the old green paint and flames I found when I sanded the panel down. I wish I can blame it on somebody else but I've owned the truck for 40 years and my youth was a little on the wild side.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
Drove my truck to the gas station, 1st time in 20 years. I have spent the past week working on it to get it back on the road. It was just awesome!!! It is amazing how we get caught up in our daily lives and forget some of the small joys.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
I have the frame mounted master, power booster and brake pedal. Fixed my brake problem(after two years of fooling around) I installed new brake lines to the rear and added a pressure relief valve. I opened the proportion valve all the way and put more pressure on the front disc's. I then installed a vacuum reserve tank and voila!!, brakes work.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
After 9 years of messing with cars I finally bought a one-person brake bleeder / diagnostic kit. One of the best tools I've picked up: brakes are now bled, truck is back on the road.

Is that Omaha Orange! I painted my truck an orange like that back in '77, that is the only other one I have ever seen, cool!

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
I finally swapped tires and pulled the truck out of the barn. It hasn't been out since before my daughter was born and she's turning four this summer. I spent a couple of hours washing it and taking note of the signs of aging, then left it out in the air all day before parking it back inside. I need to bring it in for state inspection and do some tuning. I truly hope to drive it this summer.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
finished up weather stripping the windows, putting in new latches and strikes on the doors, new door rubber, installed new glass ( dropped the old glass when I was taking it apart and put a crack in it) Now it doesn't sound like a handful of nuts and bolts going around in the dryer, that always endears me with the wife when I forget to take the spare ones out of my pockets before laundry day. It now sounds like a truck! Installed a headliner while I was at it! Busy couple of days

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
I don't have a name for the color. I picked it out of a paint "chip" book from the paint we use at work. Glasurit paint, Code is CMO 612. Sorry, not a very exciting name!

Installed the rear window. Amazing how much road noise that eliminates!

Got the front end back together (finally) and drove it around the block. It steers a bit better with a rebuilt steering box, new pitman arm, drag link, steering arms, straight tie rod, and modern style tie rod ends.

Got my cab painted today.
FINALLY
It seemed like a long time coming to get to this point. A real milestone. All in all it went pretty well. I'm pleased. I sprayed a single coat of 25% reduced epoxy for a sealer/adhesion coat and then 3 coats of the green. The instructions say to mix it 3-1-1 but I like to reduce a little more so I mixed it at 3-1-2. All was done with my Iwata LPH-400 set at 23 psi at the gun. The paint is Pro-Spray single-stage urethane in RAL-6009 Fir Green. Here's what I do for my air setup: I removed the glass from the windows in my garage doors and tape filters over the openings. On the back wall, I mount 12V fans in the window and they blow outwards. |

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
Looks outstanding, Roger. Congratulations!
Since it's a single stage do you plan to color sand and polish or will you leave it as is? Doesn't appear to have much orange peel, does it up close?

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2
Thanks guys!
Quote:
I does not have much orange peel. I did get a little around the rear window on the back of the cab but the rest has very little. I think the Iwata gun and the extra reducing helped me get it pretty darn smooth for single stage. I used a slow reducer too and I think that helps some. I did get a few dust nibs. I'm not intending on doing much color sanding. At most I'll just knock off the dust nibs with 1500 and run the polisher over it. Last edited by roger55; 05-22-2015 at 08:48 AM. |
