thats great! what motor is it? my 230 runs 17-20 i've read recently the 250 and especially the 292 are nowhere close to the mpg a 230 can run.

Re: Tricked-out Chevy six cylinder engines

The trick is on the inside. I had it bored over .040 and about .005 to .007 off of the top of the block to clean it up - rusty and about .020 off of the head for the same reason. I ported and polished the head installing a COMP Cam similar to the Mercury Marine cam. finally I used 307 pistons and they are flat top not dished like the 250s are.

Your right about the 292 not gettin near the gas mileage, but when it comes to power look, out cause the 292 smokes them small block 6 cylinders. lol. The stock 292 gets around 15 mpg. When you hook it to a four barrel and ad headers then back it with a 5 speed some say you get around 18 mpg. Not bad, I mean that's better than my dad's 496 big block chevy( A woppin 8 mpg!)

yeah for sure the inline 6's will always be better on gas compared to a v8 of any kinda my dad has a 3/4 ton dodge with a 440 that runs 7-8 mpg to lol do you know since the 230 and the 250 are basicly the same can a 230 be bored out to a 292 since a 250 could?

No. A 292 is a taller block than the 250/230/194 sizes. 292's are about 1.5" taller due to the longer stroke. The size valley covers are the easiest way to tell the two apart. 292 are more square (tall) looking and the smaller engines are definitely very rectangle is shape (short).

ok thanks so it mainly has to do with the stroke that makes the 292 a bigger motor dose the 230 and 250 have the same crank/stroke?

I believe the 194/230/250 have the same stroke, different bore size.

IIRC the 292 has the same bore as the 250 but the longer stroke.

Pick up a copy of this book. It is "THE" bible of the Chevy inline 6 world.

Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual 2nd... Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual 2nd...

Nice & clean I like that color blue, did you install the lump ports yourself or have it sent out? Very purty with the finned covers and what's the skinny on the fuel injection?..Vernski

You can see two 292's at my house! The 230-292 share the same bore size of 3.875. The 292 has a stroke of 4.125 were as the 230 has a stroke of 3.250. That is quite a difference in size. The gmc 302 has a 4 inch bore and stoke making it the tallest deck 6 cylinder in the gm line. Why? It had 7 inch connecting rods! Thats long! Now think about the bore and stroke of a 900 cubic inch cummins diesel. Whew! Scary! If you were to bore a 230 .125 over it would go to a 245. Ad a .125 over stroke it( i think) would be around a 255. So it still has a long ways to go before it will catch up to the 292. The 292 has a pushrod cover size of 6 inches were as the 194-250 have four inch. Chevy would have been smarter if they did a bigger bore on the 292 instead of the long stroke. Put a gmc 302 up against the chevy 292 and i would bet money that 302 is gonna win every time. Also one more thing, the 292 has a connecting rod length of 6.700 so not to much smaller than the 302 gm.

Thanks Vernski, It's the F.A.S.T. fuel injection setup, Tom Lowe of Autowerks in Iowa built the motor.

Larry Page from t6racing and Kay sissel from Sissel Automotive were the inventers of the lump port. They are the ones who made the mistake of sharing their knowledge because now people like Tom Lowe are doing complete copies of their products and selling them for cheaper. To put it in perspective, TAKING away business and making it look like it was them who made this stuff by giving them different names. The t6g2 lump made by larry page way before tom came about is exactly the same as tom"s premium lump port. Tom even admitted that he did a direct copy and just renamed it! This guy Tom has come in and copied everything that Larry Page and Kay Sissel and all the others who wrote the power manual. I don't see him in the power manual anywhere. Now mind you I am not trying to start a riot. I am just speaking from research. Ya got to watch out for people like him.
