Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

Bedliner just doesn't seem right to use on the frame to me. I would paint the frame and maybe bedliner the underside of the body, the cab floor , or inside the bed. Thats just my opinion......and you what they say about opinions.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

You better be WELL thought out if youre gonna bed line a frame!! I wouldnt do it in case its a mess to drill thru or something. What if you want to add some new shiny clamps or lines, ya know what Im saying?

yeah i hear that!
think i might bedline the under side the cab and fenders.....
still can't decide what to do on the frame.....i was even thinking about the DIY bed-liner stuff. cheap, and i could touch it up if needed.....
any one have long term experience with coating their frame (with any type of medium), as in 5-10-15 years?

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

On the vette I used that urethane bedliner stuff...."Raptor"...good stuff...and its tintable !!!! (that would give your truck a unigue underside look)

Came with it's own gun and hardner....easy to use.

I would paint or powder the frame, and use the liner stuff on the under side, and even the inside before the carpet goes down......It'll act like a sound deadener too !!!

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

The dirt is amazing...my truck was full. I must have had 5lbs in each side. No wonder they rot out the way they do.

I ve had good luck with my spotweld cutter. Ive only broken one blade and it was when I was really trying to hog out the welds on my control arm bumpstops. I oil it up well when drilling, too.

Instead of buying cabsupprts, did you think of just welding up some out of plate? It crossed my mind looking at my truck once. Also drilling holes for better drainage.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

yeah, i too have thought about building the supports......
it was certainly not a good design, but guess it has lasted decades.
wonder what a '08 will look like in 2050?
weird thing is the passenger supports are good, but the driver's are toast.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

Glad to see an update Joe. Your inner rockers and floor pans don't appear to be real bad. That rear brace is toast though. FYI, I ordered a front passenger side brace from Classic Parts and it was a Tabco brand. Nice looking piece too. I figured it would be Triplus like all of the other metal that I have bought from them.

Now aren't you glad you cut those rockers off before getting it blasted? What type of blasting did you decide to have done(soda, sand, media or ??)?

Glad the HF spot cutter worked well for you. I'm kicking myself right now for not knowing about them.

Hey thats what mine looked like. When mine was fixed I filled up the rockers with expanding foam. Have you done anything with the frame?

glad to hear it, i'm planning on buying all that i can from classic parts

i'm very happy that i pulled the rockers first.
it will be plastic blasted where it is rust free, and aluminum oxide on the rust. the company comes highly recommended.

oh well, i'd like to have the kit you got, but i'm a cheap-bastard

dunno yet, one thing at a time......gotta get the cab handled first......
speaking of, gonna need to prime/seal the cab soon after blasting, how long before your shop is tied up?

what kinda primer do you guys recommend, gonna do etching primer under the cab and inside on the floor for the Raptor lining.......

oh i did find out that the "cups" (for lack of a better term at the moment) that the lower control arm shafts sit in and the u-bolt goes through are welded to cross member, and the u-bolts are welded to the shafts......so something else to cut apart

Not trying to sound dumb.....but is it normal for all the components to be welded like that??
