Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well axle should be home next week from the rebuilder turning out very nice, Also got the second stage added back into my factory leaf spring the previous owner had removed to make the ride softer. Along with that the new differential cover came in and man is it nice!!! drain plug and dip sticks with an o ring seal on it. Plus heheheheh been playing with the spare tire hoist lol wait till ya see the video hehehehe!!!!!! Thanks to the UNT graduate mechanical engineering student for the Idea! Will post a youtube link in the next post works beautifully no major strain to lift the tire into place! I will however need to get another motor and have the gear machined to fit the tire hoist crank mechanism properly I didn't get it quite right lol the motor wobbled while lifting the tire rotflmao!!!!

Those differential covers are quite nice but sure are spendy!

It's nice to have a powered spare tire mount, but hopefully you don't need it that often.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Captainfab I probably wont need it that often but nice to have when I do lol still in the planning stages on it since I need to get all three parts to a machinist to machine the gear so it doesn't wobble inside the spare tire crank mechanism lol. already sourced a suburban window switch for inside the cab to mount in the center console someplace to lift and lower it The diff cover since I am going to be a significant amount of towing was a no brainer it carries an extra quart of diff lube so will help keep the differential a lot cooler and at 225$ for it I wasn't complaining. The G2 and the mag hytec covers are the only ones that have the o ring seal on them as I have been able to find

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well got the second stage put back in the leaf spring assemblies and back on the truck still have to bolt them in place seems I am missing a few of the thickened grade 8 washers from them so a nice trip to ace hardware tomorrow it seems. Also been working on the harness yet again for the engine and transmission. I had a major miscalculation when putting the harness together on the engine I forgot to make the fuel rails were in place so all the work I did went right out the window :/ oh well lesson learned lol :P Luckily I was doing my usual ebay perusal and stumbled across a shop in dallas that managed to buy up a bunch of new in box e38 computer harness assemblies from the 14 model vans. Picked one up for 175$ and am using it for the rework of the rework has almost all the proper connections for the 8.1 engine plus the trans harness wiring will crossover to a slight degree. I have to add about 10 wires into the harness to get it to the Allison setup. noticeable difference between the 06 harness flexibility and the new e38 one the 06 harness was pretty crispy..... but I have them almost all completed and ready for when I get my intake back from a friend. I sent the intake off for the modification of the air intake path so will get better breathing out of it should have it back next month along with the Allison. Once that all comes together I can drop this thing in the frame and get the engine trans harness layed out properly this time and start working on a set of exhaust manifolds for the engine that will clear the frame rails. May have to do the mod I have seen Captnfab mention in several threads from my research on here.

Here are some pictures ENJOY!!!!

Killer looking cover but don't envy you one bit on figuring out all those wires.
Can't wait to see the motor dropped in.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well apparently that nice looking diff cover turned out to be a bust it fits f250 super duties only grrrrr!!!!! Got into an argument with the parts company that sold it too me they swear it will fit rotflmao.. My response yeah it will fit if you make a 1/2 inch spacer to go between it and the mounting flange :/ So went through amazon and disputed the sale since they refused to reply about a return and got my money back and apparently get to keep the dammed cover lol think will try and resell if and if not hang on my wall as a reminder to call the company first lol. Went ahead and spent the extra money and bought the mag hytec version and it definitely fits. Come to find out the dana 60 70 and 80 axles all use the same cover.... also go the axle in place but forgot to get the correct length u bolts rothflmao so have to go the spring company and get some new ones made up that are 1.5 inches longer now. Once that turkey is bolted in can roll the frame out side and pressure wash it. Then comes time to start getting the engine and transmission ready to drop in and start the brake and fuel line getting done. Wiring harness is as far as I can get it till I get all my parts in hand on the engine should have the improved intake manifold back next week some time so ready. next month or too will be getting the body parts back as well and can start building an a frame to lift the cab back on the chassis. Also sent out the parts to my machinist friend in dallas to build the motor adapter plate for the hoist mechanism so that is another thing off the list few more to go and get this thing aligned and ready to drive got lots of parts to get broken in so going to be going easy on it for awhile

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Been concentrating on getting that dammed motorcycle out of my hair so I can get back to work on the important stuff lol. I did manage to get the new leaf spring u bolts in hand and they are finally cut down to get painted then installed on the truck. Also got a complete 71 3/4 ton front suspension cross member I am tearing apart for an experiment as soon as I get a ball joint reaming tool shipped in from California. Ifn my idea works it will be great if it doesn't welllllllll learned something new

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well got the axle bolted in finally u bolts are painted with rustoleum and torqued to 100 ft/lbs for now (that nearly killed me getting them that point :/ ).. Also got the frame pressure washed and cleaned off so that's done and ready. Started working on the front to rear brake lines cut the front to rear length a bit longer than needed until I am for sure on the prop valve placement. Then today 6 stops later I found the rear Silverado hose fitting grrr what a pain in the ass they use sae and metric fitting at the same time on some of the 08 trucks but found it and about ready to get the rear hose mounted in place and one of the fitting in place.

Started on the front to rear brake line this evening just need my transmission dropped back in the frame so I can make sure the brake lines are well away from the exhaust on the engine now

Love that flaring tool less than 5 minutes and it was a perfect flare

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

waiting waiting waiting lol so started another tinkering project the chevy trucks have led lights aplenty available for them bot so much for the front of the gmc trucks. So got online and ordered some LED strips to see what I can make with them for my front marker lights.. Still a few more tweaks and plenty of strips and will have them finished soon then one I made is the test piece will be getting more strips in the mail soon and can build both of them and get them finished up and fitted into the housings still looking at how to secure them in place thinking some clear silicone if nothing else ...

Enjoy!!!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well got the led strip double row led lights in and started getting to work on designing the front and rear tail/marker lamp led setups for smurf. Things still yet to do: Make a seal for the rears, glue the strips in place, wire them up, get dual intensity harnesses for them, and lastly figure out how to hold the front plates in so they don't fall over while driving lol

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

all jacked up and nowhere to go!!!!! got the frame up off the ground for the brake work. Dammed ifn I didn't order the wrong wheel bearing from rock auto :/ apparently my spindles are froma 79 gmc with the 8600 lb front suspension so got the right bearings ordered tonight for it. Turns out I can use either the 9/16 inch lug rotors or the later 98 14 mm stud rotors as they use the same bearing kits for now using the 9/16th set until they wear out then move to the 14 mm stud set since those are what the 2006 rims use factory.
Also got my steering box today and its a work of art!!!! nice paint job red head steering gears out of auburn Washington provided me this gorgeous lil gem bit more expensive but tight as hell looking forward to getting it on the frame and ready for work!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

waiting on a few lil things to come in for the front marker lights to be finished so started on another project I have been thinking on. I don't like the material the original glove boxes were made out of so I cut my repro gmc glovebox up as a template for an abs made one. Currently got everything cut out still a few more cuts to do but coming along nicely. Will have my bearings and brake brackets back in next week so I can start on that on my few hours between work and sleep every night.

Here are some pictures I am using 3/16 inch abs for the glove box panels.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

stumbled across another interesting find from the jeep cherokees I am looking into right now got to get my hands on some of the rear wiper blade arms off them and see if it is a possible mod for our trucks. F*** Broncos use the same mounting method for there front wiper eg 1/2 splined post and I have seen a few thread where guys have modified the jeep cherokee arms to work . talk about making it easy to buy blades. Also some of the arms have washer sprayers built in. Will post mnore when I have some time to gather some parts from the junkyard here locally. On another note getting frustrated with the trans guy, yeah I know he is having a lot of **** happen lately but he has had the trans for 3 months grrrrrrr. kinda stalled on the brake lines till I can make sure the proportioning valve is going to be well away from the exhaust, also stalled on doing my engine n trans wiring finish up as well. GAAAAAHHHHHHHH I have patience but GEEEEZZZZ!!!!! Also my body guy was asking when the trans was doen so he could start getting the body parts ready to go back on the frame :/ /sigh more waiting and other projects to start now. Front marker lamps should be finished soon still need to drill out the housings for the grounding straps and get the casings blasted n either powder coated or chromed have not decided which yet.
