Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"

Far closer to perfect than what mine will be. I'll be tackling that in a week or two, as well.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"

Last night I got one of the shock mounts tacked in. Of course this was after I was in a panic because I thought the shocks were too short. Turns out I just so happened to grab the boxes for the front instead of the rear

Here's the temporary fixture I made to hold the tab at the right angle

All tacked in!

Today, I need to finish grinding off the old mount on the driver's side (which I swear the po used an entire case of welding rods on). Then I should be able to tack the driver's side. From there, I think my next course of action will be to disassemble the frame for the top coat of chassis black. I will also use that opportunity to get the axles all cleaned up and painted.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"

I was able to grind all the gob welds off the old shock mount and tack the new one on. I think all frame mods are done, so it's now time to tear her down again so I can paint the frame!

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"

Last night I ran across a post by see ten that had a trick using a socket over the studs on the steering arm to "shock" the cone washers out so that you can get the arm off the knuckle. I honestly thought it was BS but I just had to try it. Guess what!?! It worked like a champ!!!! I had it off in about 10 minutes (after hours of heating and banging and cussing prior to that). Of course I destroyed my 1-1/8 deep Mac socket, but you know what that was a sacrifice I was willing to make.

Looking really good Mike! Should go back together pretty fast once you finish painting the frame.

So what did you do with the socket? I've got a 4x4 now, too, and may need to do that at some point.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. How I used the socket or what I did with it after? It makes a great paper weight now

I was more asking about the trick you talked about doing with the socket, not so much about what you are doing with the socket now that its toast...

Lol...no, I haven't even worked on it this weekend. I did bring the engine hoist home so I can pull the motor.

Got it I placed the socket over the studs and gave it a few good smacks with the BFH.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"

Well, progress is being made, just not on Mustard. I've been getting Blue Bell (the 87 K20) up to snuff. I ended up replacing a stretch of brake line, and I gotta say that your's looks much better than the hodge podge job I did. I think I'll be getting a better bender (like yours) when I do Mustard. The one I have just can't bend a tight enough radius to look decent.

I actually really like the 87 you picked up. Those 6.2 diesels aren't real power houses, but last forever. Man, I would recommend that bender to anyone. It worked really well for me. Almost made it look like I knew what I was doing

Frame painted and chassis reassembled yet? No pressure at all here, but you've had a couple of weeks now

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"

I haven't had a chance to work on the truck. I've spent the last few weekends trying to get our motorhome ready for Memorial weekend, then camping, and now next weekend I have to go to SK, Canada for work. So hopefully the weekend after I'll get something done. I should get out there and work on tearing my front axle down, but the motivation fairy hasn't spent a lot of time around here

Thanks for checking in though...I think it helps me lure that bugger in here.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"

Hottest day of the year so far here. Nothing like a light baking in the garage

Today my suspicions were confirmed. I tore the front axle apart and found a broken shaft. Damn...oh well, with the axle ripped down this far, it will be getting new seals, u joints, ball joints and a fresh coat of paint.

Missing something here
