Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Quote:
I set my caster to 6* (I think) using steel shims. I think they were 4* shims. I used a pair of shims on each spring, one below and one on top to make sure that the u-bolt plate stayed square to the spring pad on the axle. It might have been only 4* of caster, I can't remember exactly but I'm sure I have it written down somewhere. What do you mean by "loose" steering? I put a newer model PS pump on my mom's 64 and man that steering is SUPER TOUCHY, but still driveable. Anyway that is a 2wd so not exactly a good comparison. Are you thinking the "looseness" is because you don't have enough caster??

Jason--It just has little feel to it, easy to turn even while stopped. when i put in the 3.31's i will get some 4* shims.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Kimble, park the truck on a flat surface and put an angle finder on the bottom of the lower ball joint. Then compare that to the angle of the level of the ground and you'll have your static caster angle. Then at least you'll know where you stand. I just use a cheap angle finder from harbor freight.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Looks like you might be good with only a 2* shim. You don't want to get your pinion pointed down any further than you have to.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Big Ugly is lookin good, I believe that the color of your bed is the original color of the bed that's on my truck, at the front panel that's against the cab is peeling and looks like that same color blue.... your truck looks like a Beast and that's a good thing.....Your fenders and door looks good...where you painted them.....Of course I like the sea-horse too, I miss my 70 Burb 4x4... Here's a picture of it now when I had it it was 1/2 ton....
I'd say it's a beast now... It was factory 250 six 3spd 4x4 less than 1,000 were made with this combo, I wished I could have kept that one....Plain Jane version no power nothing... I added power-steering and upgraded to HEI... had 33's with 4" lift...

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Jason I also had a 72 Blazer with 33s and 4" lift. Right before I sold it I had just put 35s on it pro~comp all terrain... Talk about how much bigger a 35 compared to 33s wow...I think we've all had ones we wished we had back...

So this is what everyone does after the loss of a first gen blazer... they buy and build a 60-66 K10!

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
LOL,, Hi my name is Randy, Anywho I guess it started when I was looking at 4x4 trucks over on stovebolt.com. I would have loved to had a 56-57 Napco but there a rare piece and MO money So I thought the 60-66 trucks and burbs looked KOOL 4x4 of course then it was on. I saw one on the ole C/L and then it was on, but it's not a factory 4x4, it was still a 4x4. Oh one more thing it didn't help any when I was looking at your alls builds. I think the first builder I got interested in was Oklahomerduner Rock Tonka's son's truck, Then it was Jason's truck and then Rock Tonka's 58 truck and their Burb, then it was 61K10's build and then 63GenIII.. There are other's but you's guys are my favorite...When I find pictures of all my old rides I'll post them over on my build page so's I won't be taking up Jason's space on his build...

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Thanks, Kimble! I'm mentally preparing for a couple of projects on the 66.
1) Convert the engine accessories to an early 90s serpentine setup. I pulled this of a 454 sub at the junkyard a year ago. I just hate to pull off the brand new water pump and alternator. And with the switch to long water pump the fan clutch might not clear the radiator... 2) NV4500 + NP205 swap. Have everything I need. Just need to swap in the short 32 spline input to the round np205 and bolt it all together. Oh, almost forgot I need to swap in the twin stick rails while I'm in there. In the mean time I stumbled across this for a nice price on craigslist. The guy I purchased from has a sweet 61 GMC suburban. He also had a burb tank for 60-62 wider frame. Once I get this in I'll have 20 gallon behind the seat and 20 under the bed. I need to figure out how I'm going to switch between the two tanks.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Thats a pretty crazy looking tank Jason. As for switching, I'm sure you can get a selector for just about any dual tank set up and run that. The key is in the gauge switching. I'm running into a bit of a wiring issue with mine as well. 0-90 behind the seat and the later 100+ ohm in the back. Gonna take a few to figure it out.
