Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

Here's my "before pic's". I had planned on getting some wet sanding done. But I ended up getting to sick to play. No telling when the "after pic's" will get taken...haha Just thought I'd share.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

Hey guy's, I'm having some problems with a new ignition switch I bought from classic parts. It's the stock 59 ignition switch. I'm try'n to wire it up to my 1988 wire harness and I'm not having any luck. My 88 harness has a green wire that is a ground. The 59 switch doesn't have the ground. It cranks over but the inj. arn't squrting. I can plug it back into the factory 88 plug that I removed from the keyed igniton column and it fires right up. Is there another year truck that has the ground switch in the igniton that will fit the 59 dash hole?

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

I'm digging this truck more and more. Jeeeesh.
As for the stock ignition. Can you post what all the OG switch has on it?
Should just be BAT, COIL, START AND ACC the only thing I can think of is, you'd need something to trigger your fuel module (I don't know much about) so maybe that is what that green wire is all about. Some pics would be helpful.
I'd def like to figure that problem out, because I'm sure others have had that problem, like when you do and LS swap or something, how do you keep a original looking ign switch when you need to power the fuel pump.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

Thanks guy's for the kind words.

99 to Life- The ignition swith I bought from Classic Parts has. sol, acc, ign1, ign2, and battery. I checked the 88 wiring diagram and the green wire is the ECM ground input. I think the newer ignition switches from 67+ trucks and 81-91 dash mounted van ignitions had a ground input on the ignition switch. I need to make my way to Napa and look through their ign switches one of these days. I'm thinking that will start it up.

_Ogre- It fits the conture of the seat pretty good. The only issue is releasing it from the up position. You have to use your pinking finger to push the release or turn your hand. All I did was tack on a peice of 2x2 ingle iron on one side. I guess if you buy or make a shift/brake boot it would improve the look.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

newer ignition switches have lights in them
lots of plastic in the dashes too,
maybe the ground is for the light?

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

All right fellas, finally made my way to Auto Zone and found the fix for my ignition switch. I found an ignition switch for a 82-90 P30 Chevy van. It uses a dash switch that is the same size as the stock 59 switch they also had the key cyl with key. Part #'s are Duralast LS411 ($17.99)for the ignition switch and Lock Smart LC14220 ($8.99) for the lock & key. They couldn't find the wire pigtail in their system for this P30 van. So I asked to see one from a 67 and it's the right one. However, they didn't have one in stock. I'll have to check NAPA later. By the way the stock 59 screw on ignition trim holder fit's this new switch. I hope this helps someone out. It has Bat, Acc, Sol, ign, ground 1 (which I needed) and ground 2.

Re: SGTUSMC '59 build

That is good news, seems like about once a month there is a thread about finding a newer switch that will fit the stock TF hole. Someone might want to add it to the tech articles.

[QUOTE=sgtusmc;3931131]Okay my pig has finally arrived. Thanks guy for allowing me to join the 4 holer club. I'm not sure which way I'm gonna take this truck. I was thinking about going stock, however, my wife really likes it. She was bumping her gums about a pink and off white ratrod...lol

Can I join the 4 holer club as well? Looks like you're on your way to a great project!
