Re: Daverods 52
If tacks will hold then why weld anything? My penetration was very deep.

I dont think you understand young grass hopper. I said GOOD tacks will hold. But you weld it all up to withstand the punishment.

Oh, I see master. Learn that at welding school? I guess they could have been better. They won't be come off any time soon. Unless I have to cut them off.

Re: Daverods 52
alright fellas, don't rock the boat.
the dog pics are killing me. I want my rot back! I gave up a female pup to my friend not long ago. Are you gonna fire that engine up on the stand or put it in and do it? If so I would wait to put the front clip on, that way you can access the thing a bit easier.

Your right Dave, your welding does look like scattered rocks, But your grinding is awesome!

Least he knows good grinding when he see's it. Test fitted my engine. Upper arms are hitting the headers. Might have to notch the upper arms alittle?

Re: Daverods 52
Think I'll just use the s10 trans cross member. I'll just have to make it more narrow and change one of the ends alittle. Need to get some metal for a tran hump.

Dave you should live next to my neighbor, he thinks he's Kid rock. Grew his hair long and made it blonde, wears all the gold jewelry. Mostly every song he plays is Kid Rock's old stuff.

Re: Daverods 52
Used the old s10 trans crossmember. Had to move it back alittle and change the ends. Put the old steering column in and figured out how to hook that up. Go some less wide tires 215/75r15 had them on my horse trailer so there were like new and did'nt cost anything. Thay should fit alittle better. The 235's where way to fat to use with a zr2 rear end. They'll work on my trailer though.

Re: Daverods 52
Trip to the junk yard got a slip yolk for my 700r for $15. Even came with a driveline attached. The driveline was out of a van looks like it could be close to the right size. My driveline guy is out of town for 2 weeks. Sells little gaint ladders on the side. Guess I got other stuff to do.

Re: Daverods 52
daverod, I use poster board on the more harder shapes like the tranny tunnels. It is much cheaper than steel for screw ups. I made the lower piece first in metal and put it in, the cut the poster board to close the shape for the upper part of the tranny tunnel. Then took my dirty hands and rubbed on the edges of the metal and it puts a dirt line on the poster board. Then just cut on the dirty line and check to see if it fits, then make out of metal. Hope that helps.

Re: Daverods 52
I'm sure there will be some screw ups involved. Good idea. I like how yours is arched. I've seen some that are more angled.

Ran out of cash. Guess I'll have to go work or go do body work on my 66. Waiting for some steering stuff and stuff. My 66 needs like 4 steering u joints.

Re: Daverods 52
I want to use the orginial steering column. I need to put a bearing on the end where I cut it. Classic wanted 40 plus ship for the bearing. Found one in town for 8. Gets here friday. 3/4"X1 5/8" A hair big but I think I can make it work. Not sure how it gong to slide on? Now if I could find some steering u joints for 8 I would be set. Some guy told me he used a swivel head for a socket wrench. Do the smooth bore u joints just weld on? Do you think I could grind the shaft and make it a DD or is smooth ok?

Re: Daverods 52
If it is a tight fit try freezing the bearing so it will get a little smaller. Works for getting them over shafts too.
I have broken more than one 1/2" universal by applying to much torque with a cheater, one area you do not want to compromise. Grinding for DD would be preferable but you can use a smooth shaft, just pin it. I pinned and spot welded mine except for the slid part, it is a DD. The overlap is about 4" inside, the slip joint has 3" travel to allow for body to frame flex in the hills. The set screw is tapped and threaded thru the outer and halfway into the inside shaft.

Yes the smooth bore u-joints just weld on, and yes you could grind the shaft to make a DD. The most important part is to make sure the u-joints are in phase.

Re: Daverods 52
I was wondering how I was going to get the bearing to fit. Exhaust shop great idea. It's only about 1/16 to big. I guess I'll just tack it to hold it in place. I'll put it in the freezer over night. Thanks Guys.

Re: Daverods 52
dave,
im in the same thought process for my project. About the same place you are. The freezer won't help much for a 1/16. Exhaust flaring sounds pretty good. I have seen someone on here score it in several places, then drive the bearing in, swelling the column shaft in the process. Looked like that would work as well. A search should help you find those pics. stan |
