Looks like my C10 parts chaser is getting to come together

Right Retro Riders and other knowledgeable folks.

Tire time in the USA and Tyre time in many other parts of the world.

After work I quickly got the jack out, used the rattle gun, and removed the original 7J 215/55 16” wheel and tire.

Then mocked up the Mercedes Benz 8.5J 245/40 17” wheel and tyre to see how much poked out the side.

I did not lower the car on the jack as I just needed to see how wide the wheel looks.



From the rear.



From the front.



Then actually tucked it against the hub properly and took a pic from the top.



Last pic.



Now I am no police officer, or enforcement person.

But to me, despite a bit of wheel sticking out from under then wheel arch, I would like to believe that this would be tolerated

Educate me differently.

Or show me small plastic arch extensions to bond on.

Great looking fit to me. Not sure about your laws, but it would pass pretty much anywhere here that has a law about it.

Been having that exact discussion here.

Always a killjoy telling you how bad you are, breaking rules etc.

Add small deflectors or trims.

The Mercedes wheels are ET36 for the 8.5 and 34 for the 7.5, a 234 45 will work ok on an 8" wide wheel and be nigh on identical to the diameter of the original wheel, just a bit extra poke there as you have seen.

I would get them bolted on and weight on them as they might tuck in at the top as the suspension moves up.

ULTIMATELY NOT MY CAR ANYMORE.........



But came home and saw this on the drive.




Followed by this a bit later.



And the other side later.





We knew the car had been repainted along the passenger side rear quarter and door before when it belonged to the 84 year old who gave up driving.

Looking closely, you can see the stickers had now pulled away some of the paint.

Loads of glue has stayed behind too.

Guess winter and in temperatures around 5’C is not ideal.

I am guessing Mickey will clean it all off, and then do a DIY paint job down the side as I am out of stickers.

the new wheels will look great on the van !! very happy for you to find a great deal on the wheels too. that is one of the first things I do when I get a new car / truck change the wheels to ones that I like ..

So back to the largest and also hopefully last hurdle, bar new tyres for this change to the Galaxy.

By now we know 14 x 1.5 lug bolts will not work on 12 x 1.5 holes in the Mercedes Benz Wheels.


So at Stupid-0-Clock @Johnnybravo and I were chatting about options, Harley of course being her usual self, security and QC.



Deep holes....



13mm at the rear.



Front view.

60 degree chamfer down the bottom.

Base depth 25mm plus whatever comes up to the surface.



So with JB’s advice this was where I took my search.

Studs sunk into the Galaxy hubs @14mm with a 12mm shaft.

Set with an Allen key and Loctite



And at a silly affordable cost.......



From the top, holding the wheels in place, will be these open ended nuts.





Again, sensible pricing.



So the debate is lug bolts through drilled wheels or lug nuts onto new studs from the hubs.??

Happy to hear opinions based in real experience and science.


Today included collection of the 5th seat back in Sheppey, and a visit to Darren at the shop and a chat about his laser cut sign business.

Like the stud idea myself. I have only had one car that used bolts (Mercedes). Never did like them. Guess I am too use to the American way of wheel studs.

I kinda like the new nuts n studs idea too .
I was thinking if you drill the wheels
what if the socket and lugs are to fat to fit in the hole in the wheel .
I buy some cool bullet lug nuts on ebay for some of my cool projects.

If I use a 15mm drill, then these 14mm threaded bolts should work.


I would love some silly bolts with extra detail.

Interesting day.

Went to Sally’s uncle Bobs yard to get some pics of the Bedford TK cab for an interested guy.



Then headed home to move a load of firewood from behind the garage to fill a wood shed, another firewood box at the back door, and also the pile of firewood and kindling piles inside the house, Sally doing most of the hauling.

I Dennis has been working hard at getting his NASCAR chassis sorted, welded and trimmed for the 66 C10 truck he is building.
Engine mounts and various other attachments now sorted.

So the chassis was rolled outside to await a pickup to go for sandblasting and powder coating.



This things is goi go to rock for sure.


So after the firewood session, I went to fetch the jack, impact gun and an extension cord from the garage and brought them up to the house.

Removing the fist Galaxy wheel bolt...........


Surprise !!!!!!!!


Domed and loose face, I was expecting a 60’ degree taper.




13mm shaft.



Threaded shaft - 38mm



Total length..... 62mm



Alloy wheel bolt hole base..... concave.



Thickness of Ford mounting surface 11mm versus Mercedes Benz at 25mm



And then lastly, depth of threaded Ford front hub 27mm



Lastly, mocked up, just put in place after checking.

Mercedes Benz front wheel fits comfortably without fouling up anywhere.

I had not lowered the car to get the body and wheel arch closer to the ground.



But it looks OK to me.

Would work with the shape of that as well.

Currently still not decided which route to go.....

Studs other bolts.

My friend Andy in Tulsa suggested helicoils to go from 14mm to 12mm

Need to investigate more.

Spigot rings to reduce 66.6 to 57.1 arrived in the mail yesterday.


Good look and feel.



And offered up, not yet installed as I want to flat back the inside of the faces.



So one problem solved.

Next unsolved is finding good, high quality adaptor studs.

I am known for doing things the difficult way.

Was chatting to a cousin in Cape Town earlier.

He suggested using Wurth Time Sert inserts to drop the thread size in the hubs to M12 so one can use standard wheel bolts.

Obviously need to find the right insert to give the right thread result, ie. 12 x 1.5 to take the bolts.

I have used them on a gear shift handle to put on a custom knob, but nothing so torque dependent as a wheel stud

does the socket for the original lugs fit inside the lug hole on the new wheel ?
if you were to drill the wheel for the fatter bolt.

what happened about the adaptor studs you put a picture of ?

I really liked the adaptor studs, but could not get a decent high tensile spec that would make me happy.

And yes, lug bolts fit inside, and would work, but they are too short by 15mm or so in the thread department so I would order longer, new bolts.

Had @PaulY over here by 09.15 today.

He needed to go look at a Mini Cooper S for his son about 25 miles from my place, and 80 miles from his home.

If he bought it, the car would need top come back to my place to wait for recovery to his place in Essex.

So we headed out to go look, Paul with a torch, thick insulated mat and a wad of cash.

Short story, the seller was not 100% truthful, and Paul walked away.

He did also bring along an almost new hardly used double DIN radio to sell to me for the Galaxy

After a couple of weeks of researching and trying to get some answers as to how I was going to get the Mercedes Benz wheels onto the Galaxy, I happened on a guy who specialises in Alloy wheels, attachments, and adaptors.

I was really keen on the stud insertion idea as it’s done a lot for racing applications which surely tests stuff more than a school run.

Anyway, after about 10 exchanges, he suggested I machine the M12 bolt holes to accept M14 wheel bolts

With vernier in hand I had established that the existing holes were 13mm anyway.

Having ally spigot rings fitted to keep the wheels in place, the lug bolts only exert energy to keep the energy centralised.


I liked this diagram, helps me understand what the parts are about.



So......


Action.

Cheap enough drill bits to fit into a 13mm Chuck, Tool,Station only 5 miles away.....



Two bought, just in case.

Wheels ready to be worked with trepidation



Sally on standby, camera and her critical eye on my trueness of attack.



I was amazed at how little material came out of the 20 holes in the end.



Result.

Spigot rings also seated with help of a wooden block and mallet.



I did remove the front wheel after lifting the Galaxy up to trial fit one of the wheels.

However, it became apparent that the Ford wheel bolts are too short to safely get purchase in the hubs.

So I went back to my searches and bought a set of:

20 X M14 X 1.5 50MM LONG RADIUS ALLOY WHEEL BOLTS FIT MERCEDES VIANO VITO

THREAD = M14X1.5

HEAD SIZE = 17MM

COLLAR = RADIUS

THREAD / SHANK LENGTH = 50MM

Lastly........


A bit of fun.


This car will never be Prozac with a full NASCAR livery, but maybe a wink every now and then.


Ordered replacement centre caps to replace the Benz items.


A nod toward Harley my loyal helper.
