Thanks AD, I was thinking about powder coating that piece with a silver vein black...probably just back up and paint it white like the rest.

Yea, I can't look at a flat piece of metal without thinking...damn, that needs some holes in it!

I don't think these trucks came with radiator support rods??, but the core support had some angled holes at the upper, outer edge that started me thinking.

They really don't need the support, but I've always thought they looked kinda cool.

Sooo, I cut down and dimpled a piece of 2" angle for a firewall plate, welded a couple Al. tie rods together, and bolted them into those holes on the core support...straight bolts at the core support and heims at the firewall.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

they do look good.
my 59 3800 1 ton has them, i thought they were standard on 1 ton and up.
all the core supports are the same and have the angled holes for the rods.
i believe the engine hump has dimples in the cab where they were drilled out when making a 1 ton

Sure nuff, Ogre! Our firewall is dimpled, but not drilled out.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Not getting much done, but still knocking out little things here and there...finished out the firewall/pedal/column mount support and fit in a engine oil cooler up front.

Thanks AD! We used some 1 1/2" x 1/8" angle for the support.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Similar AD, but I use this set from Barbed Wire Offroad in TX...4140 material with a center hole so you can use a bolt instead of press if needed.

http://www.shop.barbedwireoffroad.co...3-4-2-8001.htm

Compare the pricing...bang for the buck, it's hard to beat!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We were kinda struggling with where to dump the exhaust and came up with this approach.
Cut up a section of 4" tubing, slash cut the front and capped off on the back, welded some brackets to them that bolt up high on the rear of the box.
We'll run the exhaust between the frame and box into holes cut at the rear of the "tips".

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks again Kim!

My boy and I both like a tach up on the dash but the matching one to our gauges only came in a 3 1/8" OD. There's only one dash mount cup made for that size tach and it's plastic and expensive.

Soooo, we had a local exhaust shop stretch a section of 3" tubing out to 3 1/8" ID...nice, slight, press fit for the tach.

We pie cut the back side of the tubing, hammered it into shape over a ball hitch, welded it up, and smoothed it a bit.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Our original plan was to smooth all the welds and make a nice, perfect, little, round, end to the cup (it's going to be powder coated a black silver vein...all the interior pieces we're making will be), but then it would look like we just bought it somewhere.

We decided to leave the seam welds exposed so that you knew it was homemade. If I would have figured that part out initially, I would have laid prettier beads!

Anyway, made a simple mount for the cup and bolted it to the top of the dash.

Not much to add, pulled the bumper to add some traction details for when we've got to climb up and check the oil or something
