Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
Thanks guys! It was good to drive the truck again, but it needs a good tune and I am having some issues with the truck dying immediately when I try to put the truck in R or D. It idles perfectly in P or N, but as soon as I try to put it in gear, it dies. Any ideas? Just a tuning issue?
Thanks Josh

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
Other than a tuning or too low idle, is there a vacuum leak?

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
I have a drive by cable setup so I tried dialing up the idle. didn't help. I'm almost sure I don't have any vscuum leaks but I'll definitely check

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
Years ago, I had a truck that would do the same thing. It turned out to be the converter was to tight and would load up the engine enough to kill it.

Had the same thought...converter applied. Maybe lift the rear tires off the ground, support safely and try putting in gear.

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
The truck is coming out great man!
I had a question for you about this picture, I too have the Porterbuilt firewall filler panels welded in and I just got my Vintage Air kit. Did you fabricate a custom bracket for the evaporator where it meets the inside of the firewall? I don't see any mounting hardware on the engine side of your firewall. Any advice on using the VA filler panel as template and drilling the 4 holes in the firewall is greatly appreciated.

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
I was afraid of it being the TC. I'm going to get the truck tuned first and go from there.

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
there is a chance you have a bad idle air control solenoid, it may not be adjusting for the load put on by the transmission. it is a quick fix.

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
Welp, swapped the lockup solenoid and pwm in the trans and the engine stalling issue is still there. I'm pretty sure it's the torque converter itself now. Getting a new one and hopefully that'll do it. Gonna be fun dropping the trans on this truck...lol

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
What do you have the idle set at? I'm sure with your cam it should probably be 850-900 rpm. Can you email me a copy of the tune?

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
I had a professional tuner work with it for hours and could not overcome the load put on the motor when put in gear. We tried all sorts of options for increasing the idle and park and then drive and everything. There's definitely a trans issue.

Gotcha. What torque converter do you have in it?

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
no the same converter, they wanted $500 more in difference to get a larger stall 2500-2800 so I said screw it, just send me the free replacement for now. If I am not happy with it, ill buy another one later. I just want to be able to drive the truck now.

Re: "Old Olive" 1970 C10 porterbuilt build
I would try to flip that converter and just get a 2800-3K one. Or you're gonna be swapping it again. Not telling you what to do, but just one of my lesson's learned.....
