Re: A '54 named Busty

but I pressed on and went to the other side, here I did two things that made a world of difference:

1. I cleaned multiple spots to put my ground clamp on, maybe 3 or 4 spots on this angle iron, where I only had one on the other side, this allowed me to move the ground as close to where I was welding as possible

2. I twisted the other knob (despite of what the recommendation chart told me) so in other words I increased my wire speed, just by a notch as your spark box may differ, and oh lordy now we was cooking with propane, and it sounded like bacon frying on steroids
LESSON LEARNED:

Don't think of the knobs as wire speed and voltage, just think of them as Knob A and Knob B and twist them a bit at a time until you find the combination that works.
yes the close ups are the good ones, ha ha, hey I'm learning and I am honestly proud(ish) of those welds

Re: A '54 named Busty

I'm not sure I am going to fill in all the gaps but I did the ones closest to the tailgate (one on each side) using scrap metal

and keep in mind all of this still needs to be ground down and sanded flat, I hope to put a nice rounded edge all around that angle iron

Bed looks good. Good luck on welding through the angle.

Re: A '54 named Busty

I was hoping to finish the exhaust today but after a little touch up welding on the angle iron bed sides I was completely out of welding gas, so after hours of welding flush the spot welds and making the other beads look decent here's what I did instead

Re: A '54 named Busty

with the bed sides masked off I shot some primer on the angle iron and on the bed sides below it

Fun Fact: Did you know that this RUST-OlEUM primer is the exact same formula as the automotive one you buy at AutoZone and other car parts places, yet costs half as much?

Re: A '54 named Busty

so sprayed the bed side rails with some RUST-OLEUM Satin black today, honestly as you will see later when I paint other bits that there's nothing Satin about it, it comes out Semi Gloss, so rather disappointing, but on here I don't care

Re: A '54 named Busty

then I made the other sides of the grille and headlight bits black, not happy at all with this so called "Satin" paint from RUST-OLEUM it is more like their Semi-Gloss than satin, that's for sure, luckily a lot of this stuff won't be seen so it's just there for protection and I have an idea for the headlight bezels and grill pieces

Stephan

*Hillbilly Tumbler: Bolt an electric palm sander to the bottom of an old paint can. Toss in your cruddy parts and some sand. Hang the paint pan by its handle, turn on the sander, walk away for an hour, return to perfectly clean parts.
Hi Stephan tried a new media today and thought you and others may get a kick out of it, don't let the pics fool yeah it cleans the clean stuff, ha ha, doesn't really do much on the heavily rusty bits, also it breaks down and turns to powder

and to be fair to the walnut shell and the blue moon rocks, I only ran this for a fraction of the time so like 3 or 4 hours

Gregski, that "satin" coating looks just fine to me. As for the new tumbler media, nice try!!! Eventually we will find something that makes those overprised gizmos actually work. As much as I love the results from the hillbilly tumbler, it's horribly loud. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Hey, isn't this paint for your other truck? That's what it says anyway.

Although acquiring paint named for this truck might be kind of awkward. The shops that carry it are probably in another part of town and it may well have glitter in it.

In my experience with paint, both hobby and commercially, satin and semi-gloss are often close to interchangeable. In their gradations from flat to high gloss some companies list satin before semi and others list semi before satin. Are you picturing matte finish in your mind Gregski? If you remember that satin jacket you had back in the 70s (when you were like three :), it's definitely shiny.

Hey Stephan, maybe you can figure out a way to mount that paint can inside the housing for the shaker that didn't work very well. Stuff some batt insulation in there around the can and let 'er rip. Should cut down on the noise somewhat.

Re: A '54 named Busty

so as I move through these projects I go from wanting to do mechanical work and then growing tired of it and wanting to do something else like fab and weld, so I do that for a while and then I want to paint and then I get sick of that, as I am at the moment so I look forward to doing something else, well its sorta back to fabricating (and I use that term loosely) and welding the dual exhaust

I am quite please with the way the passenger side turned out granted that i made it all out of remnants I had lying around (looking at your Corona) no pie cuts here - ha ha

started out by using zip ties as a third hand
