Re: And so it begins................

Well I got the wife to go for a ride in it the other day. Is that progress?

Oh yeah, my primered hood is rusting again. Scott won't help me paint it....................

Actually here's an update for ya: I really do have a lifter tapping now and the rear brakes are apparently leaking. There ya go.

That is definitely progress! You and me and only a handful of other guys can get their gals in their trucks to go for a ride. Haha.

How does a primered hood rust???

Bummer on the tapping lifter and rear brakes. Sounds like an excuse for a new motor and rear disc brake conversion!

Re: And so it begins................

Yeah, fortunately my interior is in pretty good shape now otherwise she would have run.

Primer doesn't seal the metal. It's basically just a fill and sand step. I never got the sealer on it.

As for the engine, I did want to rebuild it with some power additions but I wasn't ready to do it. The rear discs are definitely on my list but again, wasn't ready. Fortunately, my proportioning valve is doing it's job to a tee!! Pedal is still firm and front brakes are working fine.

Haha. Very true.

Ah, yes. I forgot about that small detail. Well paint it already.

I hear ya about the upgrades. A little at a time. Glad the prop valve is working for ya!

Just giving you a hard time buddy! Take it easy!

Re: And so it begins................

Personally, i would shop around for a good used Edelbrock Performer or similar intake, a new RV/ Torque type cam and lifter/ timing set and swap them on. My brothers and I did this with two different 402's back in the day. It makes a WORLD of difference, more so than bumping the compression up when we eventually rebuilt the engines. Those stock cams were really weak!

Re: And so it begins................

Well that's what I've been wondering. Exactly what cam they put in the engine. All I know is they dropped the 402 in '72 down to 240hp. I'm pretty sure they used the large chambered heads which aren't bad if I ever get a blower for the engine but I'd like to boil tires in the meantime. And my rear tires aren't easy to turn

What year model were the 402's you did this upgrade on? And do you recall maybe what specs were on the cams you used?

I know where you live!

On a further note, my lifter quieted itself down this morning.

I love a vehicle that will fix itself. Now I'm gonna check the rear resevoir on my master cylinder to see if it has filled itself up with brake fluid too!!!!

Both were '72 1/2 ton LWB. Not that it matters, but one was an all black Cheyenne, the other a yellow C/10. I don't recall the exact cam specs, but they were Comp Cams, something from their RV/ 4x4/ torque line. Nothing radical. I'm not exactly sure what it was in particular that made the difference, but it sure did. I swear by Comp Cams. i have never run anything but their cams, and have built or had a hand in 10-12 engines, SBC and BBC. i like the fact that they have a cam line where you can give them a few specs and what you want to do with the engine and they give you a grinf number that is always on the money (IMO).

Re: And so it begins................

Awesome. I wish you could locate the info on those cams though!

So all you guys did was the intake and camshaft? No shaving the heads or boring the cylinders?

I'm sure he will be more than happy to help you cut the frame. It's getting it back together that may be the tricky part.
