Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Yeah, I duct taped all the main areas...painters tape in some....just put the newspaper in the random sized holes where I might rip the tape off while grinding. I will tape it up better before paint.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Got some CPP parts in today...and of course, the main ones I needed were backordered. Will be at least a week with shipping and of course again...they won't expedite the shipping even though all was supposed to be shipped within 3-4 days after I ordered...two weeks ago...

I knew better than to use them, but found some sweet deals on ebay, they priced matched some competitors and did a package deal that I couldn't beat so you take the good with the bad....

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

I've had a pretty good run buying cheap and selling parts and making a decent deal without too many issues...then in the last week, this happens (probably 2 weeks before I get them -3-5 business days till in stock and 3-5 days to ship)
Then, I get my booster in and it's supposed to be "show quality" chrome and it is rusted in several spots
Then, I get the posts, im's and emails about the NOS outer grill being dented during shipping. Had to refund the 600 I had already spent out of paypal on other parts....then today, the inner I sold on ebay comes in to the buyer cracked with pieces all in the box. Oh well, win some loose some. As long as FedEx honors the insurance I had paid I will come out with minimal loss.

I am going to work on some small things while waiting on the front end parts to arrive and will be ordering paint so I can get the block/tranny painted soon.

It's all good...just frustrating but if this was easy,....everyone would do it, right?

I was just thinking of all the "little" things that need to be done....it's certainly not a little list

Yeah, I have a notepad I take with me....actually I have a box I take back and forth from home to Jason's garage...has the notepad, mechanic's gloves, pen, gum, bottled water, and small parts/tools going to/from the truck.

I will make a list each day before I leave the garage of what I will need to buy if I thought of anything. And I make a list of ideas that I update as well as a to do list for the next day I'm over there. Have to stay focused

Looking good, and no matter what do not let it discourage you. Just think of it as a challenge for yourself, day by day you better yourself that little bit and get better at everything that comes your way. that is how i look at life.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

I learn something every day. I did a restoration to an 80 Z28 about 12years ago, but had a friend who did the majority of the work while I watched and learned. By the end of the build I was helping more and then finished up a lot of things and made changes after that. Customized some newer vehicles after that, but this is my first frame off so I am definitely learning. It's challenging but I enjoy a challenge and have had lots of fun so far. It's a real sense of accomplishment to do things by yourself. I want to learn to weld so my next build can be 100% me, but for now, it's nice to have a little help so we can get things accomplished twice as fast as just me doing it.

If only you were a little closer

I will be going over to work on the truck for a little bit this evening. Got the beadblasted intake from Phipp as well yesterday and got my repop gate today. Came from Mike's Bump and Grind. The one with the lettering for $200 SHIPPED
It has damage on the top edge but is repairable. We'll be taking the entire front skin off pretty much so we'll be able to get in there and fix it. I will be selling that front skin so if someone needs the lettering from a chevrolet gate for a custom job let me know

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Ended up getting just a couple hours over at the shop to work on the truck. However, spent the afternoon working and potentially earned a couple thousand to put into the project so that was worth it to me

Got a glovebox door mocked up for my gauge idea...but not ready for pictures yet...

Spend most of the night prepping and painting front suspension parts. Also painted the rear bumper brackets.

Had to take a couple pictures so here are the upper and lower cross shafts being painted and the adjustable wrench I got for the shafts

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Brainstormed with Jason to come up with a good solution for a few ideas I've been working on. Got a few more tricks coming on this one...hopefully will be a show stopper when finished!!!

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

See that you’re working on the front suspension. I did my front suspension a number of years ago and found that when you take the “A” arm bushings off, that when you reinstall them you should use the replacement torque on the charts because the threads are already cut in the “A” arm (if your using new “A” arms use the new torque in the chart)

Included front suspension torque charts from a 1972 Service Manual. As far as I’m concerned front suspension bolt torque is very important to driving safety. (don’t want anything coming apart going down the road)

Not to indicate that you haven’t already thought about this or have already gathered the torque requirements just want you to have a safe front suspension.

Good luck on reassembly and keep up the good work on the truck and build thread.

Thanks for that. I was going to have to look them up. I got the specs for the rear u-bolts/rear suspension but not the front yet. I always hear the guys on here saying to do it by feel...

Well.....on to the build

Nothing going on other than my custom tailgate panel is made...waiting to see pictures....

Tailgate came in with shipping damage so I'll be dealing with that.

Got wrong cab support so have to order it.....for the third time

Jason is busy with other work so no work on the cab recently

But I sold some parts to fund the build and am back at work and things are going well

The good thing about the build taking longer is I am coming up with and implementing more custom ideas....the bad thing is those ideas cost money

Got my one piece windows in today

Now gotta find a good passenger door fast so I can get these installed before paint. I don't want to risk messing up the paint so I'm just going to tape them off extra good like

Will do! Anyone got any ideas for mirrors that look good on the little triangles?

Also, I am considering a wood bed now...with the hidden fastner stainless strips...

...and shaving the drip rail...

discuss.....

that is where I am at with mine for sure... at least my line of thinking

I wanted to get this truck reliable and running and going and then move on to making it nice!!!
once I have htis truck reliable and running nice Ill be buying a SWB frame and adding a nice cnotch and powdercoating it. Then buying all new steering and suspension stuff for it. Add an LS motor, and wood bed and shaving all rails and seams
