So the last job on the BBQ refurb, was the job that started it all.

Lay out, plan, measure.....



Cut !



Mix a strong cement and fine sand mix.

Prep



I also wrapped the wood in klingfilm.....



Last job left for later today is to scrub cement stains off tiles, polish them and leave them alone after that.



Yesterday morning Mickey brought around a lifesaving tool.

Well, hopefully back saving.

For tearing down the wall at the garage.



Sunny outside again today.

More hedges to cut inbetween other prep jobs.

They look lovely when cut and tidy, but man I do hate doing it all, and I tend to do Mickeys as well, 8 foot tall from his side as his property is lower than mine.

So Friday my day was filled with meetings and web based work from 09.00 to 17.00

I had ordered two tons of sharp sand, 6 x 25kg bags of cement, 4 x Maxi bags of 20mm Shingle and a pallet of 100mm dense concrete building blocks

My biggest concern was managing the delivery, as I wanted to get the bags put on pallets so that I could move them down to the bottom of the garden from the sidewalk where the delivery lands.

At 08.15 the hijab truck stopped outside in the street.

By 08.30 he drove off, having delivered.

Mickey helped me with a wooden pallet rested on some 100mm beams for the building blocks as they do not come on a pallet......

Nd I really did not want to have to wheel them all down little by little on the wheelbarrow.



Bloody heavy at over a ton, pulling uphill on the drive out front.



My £5.00 pallet truck bought years ago as the scrap recyclers, came in bloody handy.

All pulled through to the back of the house.



Next move would be downhill, to the garage where they would be used.



During lunchtime, between webconferences I got the precarious loads up on the pallet truck and carefully got them down the slope to the garage.

I was pooping myself that the loads would end up off the concrete strips and spread on the lawn.

After doing the bags of sand lith cement and stone on top, on my own, the blocks bottomed out and I needed to call Mickey over to help me shove and guide the blocks down the path.

Dece[timely heavy and too heavy as loaded.



And all done.



Weekend ahead will be garden, yard work and a lot of preparation for making foundations, and also relaying a meter of paving.

I got to scrub the tiles with a wire brush on Sunday, and they came up good.

Job done now, other than wanting to replace the large wooden lintel at some point.

Amazing, how time flies.

Especially when you are busy doing stuff.

A lot of what I am doing in preparation for building this 6m Meter by 6 meter carport in front of the garage is appearing from the left field.

Stuff like having to cut back my shared hedge with Mickey some more.



Moving my steel cabinet of garden tools away, clearing the proposed wall to be demolished.





The woodwork shed is getting new roofing felt later as storm Dennis tore the top sheet off earlier this year.
Also painting it and of course clearing growth from around it.

Tight fit



Discovering an old nesting box that was habituated last year and having to repair it for reinstallation.





New position.



Painting the shed at Mickey side which is 2 foot below my ground level was interesting.





Front and left side Done.



More dismantling next and clearing the secret garden somI can get in there to paint and do the refelting of the roof.

With a house and lot, there is always something to be done. I have been neglecting a few issues around my house, but last weekend we got a couple accomplished.

During this COVID time, I have been working like normal as we are an essential company. Well, yesterday it if finally hitting home about lost work. We were informed that we will ALL have to go through a total of 2 weeks of furlough. So now I am planning what work has been neglected at my house and farm that I can take care of with little or no money out of my pocket as I will have to loose a total of 2 weeks of pay over the next couple months. I have the time off of work, but no pay so I have to get some things done. Your pictures have been a motivator for me to put some work time into my own place. Thanks for that!

I have a lodger and he does not seem to be able to understand why I go out doing all this stuff.

Guess he won’t be buying a house soon.

Sorry to hear of your financial knock, that sucks.

But like you say, it does release some time for you to do important stuff

Quick photo dump today.

Dennis in St Louis has been getting on with his 1966 C10 on a 2015 NASCAR chassis, motor and transmission build.

They have seen unprecedented rain and bad weather this year, so shoptime becomes a natural option.

The dogs are always in the shop with him, and Son Adam’s dog Cinch hates thunder and lightening.



Loads of panels made, shaped and welded to bring the C10 and Race truck bodies together.

Galaxy to the rescue, again.

Had it been the Focus, not so easy.

Went looking for some decent 100-150mm castor wheels at scrapyard to build a cab trolley for the C10 cab.

Failed.

But scored a free galvanised home gardening wheelbarrow for Sam the neighbour who usually borrows mine.



Paying for itself every day.

So next job, done on Thursday, between meetings and customers.

Oh, and helping Mickey.

He loves a fire.



Windy outside, but I decided to start the long overdue refelting of the roof.

Having added that little piece out front changed,the dynamic of the job, plus making it a bit more awkward to reach onto the roof with the flat head nails.

This piece of felt landed on the floor three times before I threw a length of Used decking on it to keep it in place till I got the first few nails in.



When I had the shed built, I specified it to be made two lengths of shiplap taller than standard, in order for me to be comfortable doing woodwork in there.

Add a concrete plinth and it gets taller.



Used a ladder to get on top, and of course when I had done the last sheet, my back refused to let me get back on the ladder....

Managed to after a bit.



And finally, done.

Well, almost, as I need to remove the wall down the right side wall which has collapsed over time.



When I got back up at the house, there was a knock on the door and Mickeys wife dropped off two packages, one for me.

Sent by Craig’s wife and decorated by his daughter.

Sally came over after 7.00pm as another potential lodger had messed her around, not actually coming to look when she was waiting to show the room and house.

I was knackered and ordered a SMALL PORTION OF FISH ND CHIPS.that Sally picked up on the way to me.



Yes, it really is a small portion, and we still did not finish all the chips.

Mr Fox got his share.

It’s full speed now for Dennis and his NASCAR truck build.

With the bedside panels and tailgate fitted, more fettling followed.

Tailgate fitted.



With the amount of power that’s going to be put through the rear end, Dennis decided to add the rear spoiler to add to downforce and also stability.



Adjustable supports to fine tune downforce to suit different race tracks.



Lovely



Smaller units above the closing chains.





Rear will get closed in for aerodynamics and also looks.





Next job up for today is to go buy some new plugs.

You may ask why would you need power inside the truck.

Maybe I will leave that for you guys to answer.........



Pretty obvious ehh.

So for the clever engineering and applied geometry types out there.

I am sure this is not a difficult thing, and if you add in CAD then even easier.

Right....... I will try explain and hope it makes abstract sense to some of you.

Simply put, I want to build an approximately 5 meter Long by 6 meter Wide carport, in front of and to the right of my existing garage.

Part of the 5 meter “depth” has to overhang the existing garage door without impairing its opening

Then........ I have a woodwork shed, built on a 200mm high plinth, and also slightly taller than average where the 5 meter side, away from the garage wall, needs to overhang the shed roof, while allowing a sloping drop off for rain and melting snow that tapers from the entrance side. It also faces into the majority of our wind and rain direction at that low end.

I want the 6 meter wide front end and entrance span to be as non intrusive as possible, so uprights need to be against the sides of the overall area.

Which means a potential upright support pillar at 4 meters against the garage front gable wall between the doors, leaving as much as a meter overhanging at about 2.6 meter or 8’6” off the floor and supported from an upright post with cantilevered support outward. Make any sense yet?

Right.

The rear post, next to the woodwork shed is near 5 meters from the garage rear corner, but needs to still overhang the shed to create the 6 meter width that I am looking to create.

Out at the front of the carport, the 4th upright pillar is going to be about where the brick red colour wall is at the moment, that wall plus the grey wall are all coming down and the wall is getting rebuilt about where the red wall is now, including post no 4 the front one, which is at 6 meters from the garage.

I am happy with a short lifespan roofing solution of ply and glued down felt roofing which one would hope will make 8 years before needing replacement.


So......

How do I address the weird geometry on two planes as well as ensuring the energy/mass transfer is done sensibly?

Out at the front of the carport, the 4th upright pillar is going to be about where the brick red colour wall is at the moment, that wall plus the grey wall are all coming down and the wall is getting rebuilt about where the red wall is now, including post no 4 the front one, which is at 6 meters from the garage.

I am happy with a short lifespan roofing solution of ply and glued down felt roofing which one would hope will make 8 years before needing replacement.


So......

How do I address the weird geometry on two planes as well as ensuring the energy/mass transfer is done sensibly?

I would be worried about the overhang by the garage door and the one corner by the shed. Most carports I know where there is wind, the posts are at the extreme corners to not allow flexing from the wind. You just planning a flat roof I assume, which makes the possibility of flex and wind sailing a bit more.

Ahhh yes Bill.

I agree.

Flexing could result in energy transfer where you don’t want it.

I agree with Bill, I would eliminate the cantilever overhang stopping it just before the garage door, if it is not a must have...

Overhang equals 15 foot or 5 meters.

Minutes after posting about going to the scrap merchants to look for some trolley wheels, in order to build a cab trolley, but only scoring a wheelbarrow for neighbour Sam,. A buddy, Fil “Sparkplug” from Cambridge posted up these pics, offering free home delivery...... This week.

Yup, life certainly is good





Wood is rotten, but I was only looking for wheels to reuse.



Suddenly more pieces were falling into place.

Getting the paving corrected as part of this carport build is necessary

The camera loses some of the damage perception but a plank gives you the idea at least.





While out at at the shops and in the scrapyard on Saturday, Mate PaulF whose hydraulic press I used for the Chevy Blazer suspension parts and whose brake line making kit I got to use to make up the C10’s new brake lines And I were chatting on Messenger Video, as you do, when he asked me what job was next, so I mentioned that the paving, posted above here, has to be repaired and the base compacted and redone.

“Do you have a whacker plate or compactor ?” He asked, of. Course I did not, so he offered to go fetch his from a friend who had used it and deliver it to my place in an hour or two.

Plus have a coffee and a chat.

Bargain !!


Couple of hours later a Nissan Cube reversed down my drive.



Giving birth to this handy tool.



The weather turned in the afternoon which stopped play, but a good weekend in all.

Saturday evening sunset.



Sunday rolled in and I had planned to get started on lifting the paving and repairing the subsidence

Facebook said it was 6 years since the last MOT on the C10



But Sally who came over by 08.00 had other ideas as the weather still sucked.

Also, I had managed to get a second short term lodger, a welder on a maintenance contract at a local power station.

So it may just be 7 weeks or less, but cash ion the bank is cash in the bank.

So Sally insisted I clear out some space for the new guy. She also has a new lodger, which will help fill the hole her cars engine blowing up had made in her savings.

So it seems I was stuck indoors all day.

Found some food from 2009 and more recently.

Not impressed with Sally Poking the Bear.



Chatting with Craig at one point, he was photobombed by Lilly.



Back to cleaning the house, every surface, flor etc washed and cleaned.

Sally is a menace with a camera.



Eventually got it all wrapped up, and to be honest, I am pleased, and thankful for all the help she gave me too.

Hope to find time over the next weekend to sort the paving if the weather plays along.

There is an old traditional saying: “Never drink with a Russian unless you are a Russian”

Last night, through the wonders of Whatsapp and technology, I joined Vladimir and friends Oleg and Yelena in Olegs garage for a drink or two.

Vodka, Beer and Bacardi flowed for over an hour.

Between our broken Russian , English and Google Translate, we had a good visit.

As we know, if you have no photos, it did not happen.



Yelena was hostess, pouring vodka and matching the guys all the way.

Charming lady and mother of Olegs three daughters.



Following my previous visits with Vieux and guided tours of his shop and his neighbors shops, I would absolutely recommend you reach out to him via PM to exchange numbers and have a chat or text conversation.
Whatsapp is free after all.
