Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I finally got around to replacing this POS upper bed trim piece with a nicer one I bought in the Parts Board.

Nice driver quality. I had to straighten it a little, fill a couple of holes, and repaint it.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I actually worked on it. New front brake pads, packed the wheels and replaced the passenger side upper control arm shaft and ball joint. Now everything in the front end and steering is new except the lower control arm shafts and right inner tie rod end.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I replaced all three u-joints and the carrier bearing. Got a question though, while pressing in one side of the u joint I broke the outer ring on the yoke. The ring I'm talking about is where the retainer clip fits into. How long can I expect the u-joint cap to stay in without the retainer clip?

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

sjarrett71 : if you are home stay there, if you are a little ways from home drive real slow and go home....if the u joint did not want to go together , you let a needle bearing fall down into the cup and it want go together....pull it back apart and see how many needle brg, are broken inside the cup. if you have a few old good ones you can put it back together and get a good clip...or go get a new one, and put it in....the secret is put a some grease in the cup with the needle brg. to hold them in place while you install them, best to use a vice to start both ,then and socket, the right size....to get them in all the way ..checking while you do this for alinement and if its binding up....hope this helps.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Ran all over town buying a new set of wheels & tires (at least new to me) for my ride and then getting them mounted, balanced then cleaned up. Also bought new shocks and a new set of gauges for my weekend project.

I will try to add a pic with the new rubber...not sure how to do that from my phone though...

I appreciate the info but the u-joint is in correctly, no out of place needle bearings or anything. My problem is the outer edge of the yoke broke off so I can't install the retaining clip. I was trying to get just a little more space to install the clip and pressed too hard, snapping off that outer ring.

Ok..did not know your yoke was broken....i have seen guys spot weld them in until they wear out again or have time to get a new yoke and replace the parts at a later date....that would be up to you...good luck on you truck...

(Yesterday, actually.) I had my older son wash the truck, and I waxed it after supper. No pics yet.

I was actually thinking about doing that. Gonna have to replace it anyway, might as well get as much use out of it as I can!

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Started trimming ther cross brace on my bed to clear the new blazer tank. Also skim coated some filler of the welds of my old gas filler, filler panel.

Thats about all I got done yesterday, 111 with the humidity kept me in most of the day.

When I get home today, I'll finish cutting the brace, and install the LMC headlight wiring harness that the UPS man should be dropping off.

I took my trailing arm crossmember out it took me three hours but the mother bleeper is out. Only having a drill sawzall crowbar and hammer made it interesting.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Kinda of a catch up on the last couple weeks on my 72. I pulled the blown 307 out of it last week and started cleaning up the frame and decided to add power steering since I had all the parts laying around. Today I started replacing the hardlines to the front brakes that I couldn't get to easily before, that and the drivers side one had rusted through. I then pulled the door on the drivers side and drilled and cut out the old rusty rocker and mocked it up with the new one and clamps to check fitment. Got started welding in the inner rocker, but heat and a storm moving in kinda stopped me. I've got to cut out the rusted floor and need to order my cab supports and cab corners and most of the drivers floor board.
