Looks good. Please I hope you don't think I'm being too anal. I really like what you're doing a lot and don't want you to have any problems. I work in development, prototyping and PCB design, so my kids can eat (by no means an expert though) The only immediate potential issue I see is where the standoffs interface with the PCB. The solid green areas where the standoffs are resting on are copper plains. I have no idea without looking at a schematic, if the 2 planes are electrically the same, or what. You could trace the plains back to a component with an exposed solder joint and using an Ohm meter, see if they are the same potential or shorted to each other. If they are NOT, then the metal standoffs and metal connector case would provide a shorting path from one plain to the next if the solder mask were to be comprimised. Couple things you could do (if you want), replace the stand-offs with a non-feris type or plastic hardware. Or isolate the existing stand-offs with a material like mylar or some sort of plastic sheet under them. (I like to use old coffee can lids because they are flat and can be trimmed to whatever you want. ** also as expoxy forms because the 2 part I use won't stick to it**). Another possiblity might be to locate an appropriatly sized enclosure to house the PCB (Mouser or Digi-Key or some similar online place). With the PCB ridgidly mounted, you could use panel mount I/O connectors mounted in the enclosure itself and that would help protect the board from Vibration at the connection points. If grounded properly, then from noise as well(I didn't even want to get into injecting noise in the plains). Depending on the enclosure selected, might make easier to install in the Minx. Hopefully that wasn't too Nerdy. I you need more clarification, let me know. I had fun in both services

Too nerdy??? We are well beyond that!
Thanks for the suggestions. The the holes I put the standoffs in were pre-existing with metal screws holding the needle actuator at that position. I think I'll take your advice and add some plasic washers anyway. |

If that is the case, then it maybe that the 2 plains are the same potential and you'll be fine. It's hard to tell, not having the board in front of me. What your doing looks sound, I was just looking at it from longevity stand point if you planned to drive it hard or AutoX the car, but I'm sure you'll baby it like a Grandma right? Hopefully not with the redline that engine has. (I've breifly entertained the idea of mating a Honda engine to the transaxle in my wife's Corvair) Regarding your LCD package, are you planning on desoldering it and relocating or getting another display and jumpering onto the thru-hole leads on the secondary side of the board?

The LCD contacts are just pressed in so it's easy to remove. I am planning to simply solder leads between the back of the board and the LCD contacts with another DSUB arrangement in between. Thank you! Last edited by Frizzle Fry; 01-19-2010 at 04:09 PM. |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Thanks Ed
I've made some serious progress with the DS inner fender and frame rail. Same deal as the other side so I'll post pics when it's further along. I did get the itch to ditch the honda logo and VTEC lettering from the coil cover. Here's the direction I'm going with it (script is just sitting on there for now): |

Frizzle, that car is coming along nicely, way prefer the sunbeam wmblem over the V=TEC emblem. i SURE WISH THAT I NEVER SOLD MY s-2000 now. I had plans for it but needed the money. darn it. Darn caps lock also. to lazy to fix it.

Really nice touch with the emblem. Any other thoughts on giving the engine a Sunbeam retro look?

Yeah, wherever possible. ITB's would be a nice, yet expensive, touch. I'll probably do some satin black on some parts too. The valve cover itself will either be satin black or body color. Get rid of the plastic fuel rail cover, etc.

FF I'm sure whatever you do will be epic as with the rest of the car. The only reason I asked was the oil cap looked Fugly when next to the Sunbeam script.
But now that you mention it a pair side draft Webers style TBs would look choice

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
one of those round metal ones should fit nicely ......... sumtin like this one : http://www.kreidlerdatabase.nl/Afbee...egraaf%205.jpg (this is a gascap of a moped ) might be one on the original motor that came out the car , might be nice to cadmium plate some of the realy small parts too that gives the metal a greenish brass colour , they do that kindah stuff to carburators linkages a lot

It's the little perfectionist touches like this that keep me hooked on your build threads, FF. The script on the valve cover is a nice touch too.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
Thanks man!
I did some more clean up/wire-tucking on the engine. Permenantly afixed the sunbeam script (was just posed in the previous pics), and finally got the right length serp belt to run with A/C delete. Most importanlty, the frame rails are 99% done! Just a bit of clean up left to do and I'm on to the rest of the build. |
