Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Dave,

The computer controls the engine ignition timing by receiving sensor imputs such as a knock sensor on the block.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

The trucks front clip is back on and alignment of body panels turned out good.
A few photos of progress are below. The truck still needs to be trimmed out on the outside, along with interior work.

The truck was brought to the alignment shop this evening. Alignment of the rebuilt/modified front end should be completed early next week. The effect on alignment specs. of moving the lower control arm forward will be know soon. The alignment results will be posted. The front tires in photos are trailer transport tires, the actual ones are same as rears.

A few more photos. The front clip body panels look a different color because the are covered in body shop dust. To cold to wash with current artic blast.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Jeff,

Thanks, I am getting ready for it to be drivable.

Should be done at alignment shop tomorrow. The "Caster Mods" discussed here on the site, that I did, will see the results, how much addition caster I was able to gain.

Also, will see how the truck sits, it will be first time I see the "Slots" with 275x60x15s at all four corners. Up to now have kept the 7" rally wheels with 205x75s on front for ease of trailering.

Still I really like how it sounds at idle. Hope to find a way to post a sound clip.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Truck is back home tonight from alignment shop, exhaust install, and front clip install, with good news on the "caster modification" . The caster is now plus 6 degrees, a max of 6.64. The original modification was a move of 5/8 to 3/4 of an inch. May be a while before a driving report will be available to complete "caster modification" report, because of the winter weather. Will post image of alignment report. Below are earlier photos of modifications.

A more detailed discussion of caster modification is detailed earlier in build. The bottom photo shows how much the bottom control arm was moved forward, by changes in the shaft holes. In this photo, middle shaft is the origional shaft positioning holes. The lower shaft in photo, is the modified one, by rotating shaft 180 degrees and drilling new holes, that move the lower control arm forward. Please read earlier discussion for more complete explanation of changes. Also, their are other good discussions, that reference this change.

I'll be interested to see how the caster mod helps. Also, very pretty! Mmmmm, slot mags.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Flyin' Low and Stepside83, thanks for the complements. Do like the slots too.
Not too much more to do on outside, before I can drive it. Washed it today, so here is a photo of it nice and clean.

Also, this is the first time, I have seen how the truck looks, after lowering. Appears to be a small rake towards the front. Initially like it, will check it out more, in a bigger open area.

Next is figuring out installation of the HD cooling fan shroud. Plan to use the two mounting brackets vs the metal cover.

Love the slots. Wish they would start making a 15x10 though, 9's aren't enough.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Last time I checked the 10 inch blanks were on back order, once available they can be drilled per request. The rear slots are new.

The fronts are origional American Racing wheels from the 80's AR111s. I was only able to find two. Keep looking for 10s with needed back spacing.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

LSX408 and Flyin Low, thanks for encouragement,

On the slots- fronts are 8.5s, I just got them on the truck for first time. Need to check them out for fitment/ clearances. With moving truck only around in driveway seemed good. Current and forecast cold weather and snow has slowed truck work. Will give full summary report on all the front stuff once driven some.

The rear slots are new American Racing, they maybe temporary. Thinking seriously about 10s. Been looking for about a year for 5x5 vs unilug, along with about 4 1/2" back spacing (BS). No luck, closest were 10s, 3 3/4 BS, with holes drilled for slicks. For all the looking, I would purchase them now if I could. Also, need to look at current rear rear/tire fitment to see what max wheel/tire combo would be, especially BS vs extending beyond fenders.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Low Elco thanks for photos, yes, the dish looks deep on your truck, maybe, BS is in the 3s. I will drop some stings from my fender edge to see how much extra depth I have. Back of envelope guess, I will need about 3 inches, for 10s with 3 1/2 BS.

HD Cooling 4 Core Radiator - Brackets for Top of Radiator/Fan Shroud

Test fitting top brackets that holds radiator and fan shroud. Using the two brackets vs the one metal cover. The brackets fit core support and hold 4 core radiator with rubber insulators correctly. The spacing horizontally is also correct for attaching the top of the big block fan shroud. Media blasted them and will coat them before install. Not sure what sheen of black to use.

The big block core support is from LMC. A couple of photos are included.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Where does that hose below the radiator cap go on your truck? My radiator support came out of a diesel truck and the radiator that was on the support has the same outlet. I'm planning on using that radiator but I don't know what its for.

Edit: Just saw one of your engine bay pictures, guess its for heater core circulation, good to know I can block off the outlet on my water pump.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Test upload of my first video, showing truck idling on YouTube. It is unedited, have not researched/tried editing program yet.

It is a little rich in this cold weather. Normally will not be driving in winter, just got it out to do the video.

Not much done this week, hope to do more this weekend.

Link:

http://youtu.be/dP6cG9r5s5M

In the video the exhaust is a little louder then when standing by the truck, it is more mellow. Also, where I had camera, likely has a effect on sound. This is just a first attempt, much more for me to learn about making videos.
Still need to do a little more work before, first drive.

I still like to just hear it idle.

Les

Tried to edit above message, but could not do it????
Also, not sure why YouTube link is not just my video, rather then continuing on to another one at end of mine??? Maybe because I added link subjects?? More research on my part to learn how all this works. Will contact Rusty to see if he can delete, above two posts.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Finishing HD Radiator Install, Continued

Today worked on installing the fan shroud for the HD four core radiator [same as BB radiator] for a 350 CI engine. This is an upgrade for this truck, non original. Review of parts, fan shroud is for a Big Block {BB} from LMC Truck, top two radiator/fan shroud brackets are for a HD four core radiator, non BB. Media blasted the brackets and paint them gloss black, and ceramic coated the bolts. Have the fan shroud aligned, but not fully bolted down. So it does all fit. It took me a while to find the right parts for a 350 with this cooling system. Last part is to install the plastic cover between the two top brackets, next time.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side

Starting to install the wiring harness for the front lights. Been a while so had to review where it all goes. First two key markers for harness are 1). the windshield wiper fluid container pump motor wires fit at second harness plastic clip( it is kind of hard to see the pump wires leave the harness); and 2). the left side front lights and ground at next clip. This is as far as I got today. A few photos of what I did today.

Wanted to take it for first drive, however, worked on getting lights legal first. It was 60 here today .

If you look close in bottom photo, you can see that I am still waiting for front shocks, they have been back ordered for several months. I keep getting new dates for when they will be shipped.
