Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

I dunno, maybe a motorcycle mirror might be a cheaper option, according to how they could be installed. $68.27 each. From motoleather.com.

Those mirrors are nice...now gotta find a cheaper version of them

Good thing is Jason will be doing the majority of the work on the drip rail...bad thing is he won't work for free for some reason

by the way...I can't let that last comment go either without saying.....psssst...
Okay, okay, I deserved it...

Here's the panel...it will go from right under the angled part of the tailgate to the bottom and end to end....basically looking like one of the flush covers but have the lettering in it.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Here's the concept for the tailgate panel...all molded into the gate of course...not applied to it like it looks in the picture...
I'm not going to paint the lettering a different color...I want it there, but want it to be somewhat subtle as well...

It's from the shop Mekdad works at Wayment Mfg. He's not a vendor but I had his card from the radio plate and they were very reasonable for this.

Got the last part of the support welded in....a little grinding and it'll be good as new

And the money shot of the rockers w/ the pinch weld shaved.

You'll note the upper cab support slightly shows....it will be ground down so that it won't be seen if someone leans down level with the truck at a show

Thanks guys. I've seen similar ideas, but not taken to this level... I have a few other ideas I'm working on right now as well....

Alot of what I'm doing are things that people have done before but I am trying to do some things differently and come up with a clean overall look for the truck that is smooth without being completely shaved...and simple with a little bling and detail here and there

I love the tailgate insert! I have been known to do a "govament" job in my time too. I have built countless custom chevy parts on vertical machines similar to what you used to cut yours. We just ordered a new 5 axis machining center. I can't wait to see what fun parts we can make on it. (when production slows of course). I really like your project.

Thanks. I't be nice to have that as a toy...I'd get into trouble though spending all my time playing on it and thinking up ideas...

Interesting idea on the tailgate insert - should set it off pretty well from the others that you see everyday.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

It is going to replace the entire area from under the angled part of the upper gate to the bottom and from the left to the right side totally. Will be welded flush with the face and the extra will sit inside the gate and not be noticed of course. Had to be that thick for detail to show up and still have good thickness to the panel.

If you look at the blazer picture where I threw the insert in imagine the lettering in the middle w/out being the metal color...the gate will look like that gate w/out the handle and smoothed out....just the lettering in it.
