Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
That looks awesome!!! I have to say I love the tach pod and want to say thanks for sharing that tip! That is sweet! I may have to buy some of those dimple dies. That sure is a fast way to add strength to a bracket or panel.

Thanks Kim, your constant support is very cool!! Thanks Rick, I'm anxious to start reassembling already!! Very nice of ya AD, thanks! The finish is a black hammer tone powder coat. We were initially wanting a black silver vein finish but it was a little too light and would not have had the UV resistance that the hammer tone did.

I would have ever thought of that powder coat on the gauge panel but it looks great.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
We kinda struggled with whether or not to powder coat that panel. I ordered it black anodized and liked the look, but we made a snap decision the day after we dropped the other parts off to go ahead and coat it also...figured that if nothing else, it would at least match!!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Yea, it kinda was. I'm looking forward to bolting everything back together...for the last time!
Not much to add tonight, stopped early and took the family out to dinner. We did build out a simple dolly to roll the cab around on, stout enough to climb all over the cab, load on/off trailers, etc...gonna be on this until the cab goes back on the chassis.

Nice cart! Looks like a 57 Chevy in the background. Another project?
What color for the cab? Everything is looking really good! |

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Thanks AD, the cart is working good!
My son picked up the 57 as a possible project, but it's going to need more work than we want to undertake. Great parts car or even a project for somebody more familiar with it than we are. He's got it up for sale. We had been thinking of keeping the 58 white, but have decided to go to a light silver on it.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
In its prior life, the front fenders/inner fenders/cab had been welded together in a couple different spots in addition to rusty areas being poorly repaired and covered up. It's solid on the surface but kinda ugly underneath in areas.
If we had another cab/front clip, we would swap this one out...but we don't, soooo, we're going to move ahead with this one, patch where we need to and make the best of it for the time being. Since the front clip was basically permanently attached to the cab, we thought we should finish the job. While we're finishing out welding/smoothing the firewall/inner fenders we are going to fill most of the front clip seams...starting with the inner to outer fender seams.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
That's a lot of welding.
I've seen a couple trucks at shows with the fenders welded to the cabs. They look pretty good without the seams. Kim |

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Yea, there was a little bit of welding...there was a lot more grinding though!!
I did the welding, my boy did the grinding/smoothing!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
We wanted to keep part of the original straight six on the truck and came up with this cowl panel...

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project
Bit more smoothing and it'll get the same black hammer tone powder coating...

Nice work on everything! Those filled seams look killer and so does the upper fire wall plate.
