Re: 73-87 4x4s
Some recent pictures of my square from this past summer. Original post is on page 1.
These pictures were taken on our weeklong off-roading/camping trip around the Utah Canyonlands. Summer 2010 Doesn’t look like much in the picture, but this was a very steep 3 step off camber obstacle. The type of obstacle that makes your sphincter pinch holes in your seat knowing you are 5 hrs down the trail from the paved road and if you dump it you're really screwed! The trusty and nutsy 8.1L

Re: 73-87 4x4s
^^^ I love your truck. If I had the $$ I would go with the 8.1 L, and I have evil thoughts of a 7.3 or 6.0 powerstroke, just to be different.
I sat and looked at this whole thread one day when I was supposed to be working, very inspiring. Sarge

Nice flex. What suspension are you running on that rig?

How does that 8.1 handle and such?? Is it lighter than the old Gen IV BBC engines?? I know it makes more power, but would it really be worth the headache of the computer controled units?? (big brother is watchin you!!!)

Re: 73-87 4x4s
Sarge,
You would be crazy to install a Navistar 6.0L engine in anything other than a junk pile. 99% of the 6.0L VT365 (Powerstoke) engines give the rest a bad name. I can freely say that as I work for Navistar. Desert Bob, The front has Superlift 6” softride springs, ORD shackles and sway bar disconnect. The rear has the ORD shackle flip, HD long shackle and 56” spring packs from a ¾ ton LWB 4x4 that I added two arched springs to (mainly to help with the weight the truck often carries off-road). It flexes well and rides surprisingly well. Rides much better than my two stock Silverado HDs with IFS! Truckerboy, Now that I have the 8.1L calibrations dialed in, it is awesome. Unbelievable HP and torque from a stock engine. This truck goes on trips from sea level in Arizona to 14,000 ft elevation here in CO, a carbureted engine is a hassle to deal with when it comes to such extreme elevation changes. The 8.1L is indeed lighter than the 454 I pulled out but not by much….maybe 50 lbs or so. This 8.1L system is pretty straight forward. I had the tuner turn off the power robbing stuff that takes away the fun on newer engines. EGR was turned off, Torque Management was turned off, Electronic Throttle was turned off (running a L29 454 mechanical throttle body), downstream O2’s were turned off and a 425 HP 91 Octane hot tune was added. It runs an in-tank Corvette/F-body fuel pump on a 87 fuel sending unit. It has not been on a dyno but the tuners estimates feel about right the best I can tell. It can be a difficult at times driving a hotrod engine backed by a dump truck transmission (SM465). The engine wants to run like hell and the ancient trans doesn’t like to shift fast! A NV4500 is planned this December.

Re: 73-87 4x4s
Dirtylarry,
Thank you. Just wondering as my K20 rides..well...like a truck. My 98 1 ton Dodge 4x4 Cummins rode much better than this rig. I wonder how well it will flex when the time comes. Hmmmm BTW. Love that blue. Might just have to paint my Baja Bug that color.

[QUOTE=DirtyLarry;4207372]Sarge,

I can freely say that as I work for Navistar. I dont know, my 6.0 has been real reliable and its been modded. I think the 6.0 is a great power plant, but I think the Ford techs that work on them caused most of the issues. My 06 has 63k on it and its been in the shop about 5 times in all that time. 1 time was caused by me. Thats a debate for another pace and time though. We all like what we like and thats what makes the world do circles. At any rate. I will stick with the TBI 350 I have from my 87, maybe do soame upgardes to it, and later down the road do something else. I will say this though, IO red every post you make and your trucks have been my inspration. Sarge
