Got plenty of those stores in Colorado now too. Haven't been in one yet, not really my style...

Yeah, the perspective gained from driving coast to coast will get you thinking. Basically, both coasts are very different, but both are where most of the people and big cities are. It thins out in the middle with an occasional hub city that supports a larger area...or not much of anything at all, people wise. I've been places where it would take a 1/2 tank to get to the gas station. That's where the idea of a second tank came along I figure. Most ranchers store their own fuel, too. The East is older and more filled-in and by the time you get to the west coast it hits you how different it is, although much is built-up as well. Since way back there have been those who got off the boat and didn't venture far and those who needed to see what was beyond and didn't need nobody's help. That's the pioneer spirit. More independent. But with time the bigger cities in the coastal stats have generations who also have not ventured far and rely on infrastructure as well. Gets you thinking with all that time behind the wheel and all you see

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
This whole trip
We have been through a bunch of college towns They always seem to have an up beat vibe to them Also good used book stores Whenever I see one, the kids always say "How long is this going to take , an hour or 2?) And it usually does!! This was another good one But you had to watch your step |

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
On your way south from Bend, near La Pine, if you have time, consider checking out Newberry Crater and go up to Paulina Peak. There are great views of central Oregon, East Lake and Paulina Lake.

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
Back to the trip
We dove over Santiam pass to Bend today Emma had told me to check out The Blue Pool So we gps'd it and made our way to the hills I guess there was a fire recently, so we got diverted to a diferent Trailhead to start our hike Brad wasn't to excited to here from the park ranger that it was over 4mi. Just to see a blue pool But he declined to stay in the truck, when I said "I'm going" A great hike through lush forest understory |

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
The phenomenon is when get you to the end
You don't see where all the water is coming from There is only This blue pool No water fall into it or anything I guess the water travels underground into it And some how that also creates its blue color It looks to be quite shallow But I guess it is 20-30' deep in some areas |

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
I agree that the debate had the most viewers than any other in a long time, if not the most in history.
But it's such a distraction from the real beauty of this country, like the pics you post. These are the types of places I would like to spend my days; they make my soul feel complete. I just like to enjoy the silence and feel a part of it. |

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
Loving seeing the pics from back home in Oregon! When I was going to school in Corvallis I always looked forward to the trip over Santiam when I'd go back home to Prairie City for a weekend. It can get a little hairy sometimes in the winter, but no less beautiful! I miss that part of the country every day!

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
I guess that's a nature artesian well (spring fed). Talk about pure water! Huh, spell check doesn't even know the word "artesian". Stupid computer .
What a wonderful area the north coast is. Mystical is what comes to my mind. If you're running down 101 through Humboldt Co. make sure to check out Fern Canyon. Might see the herd of Roosevelt Elk. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...RCuPDmpUWqR2vQ I don't think it'll be too far for Brad to hike...heh heh

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
Wow this is great, my family used to own Paulina Lake Resort! We owned it in the late seventies. Beautiful place to live and visit! I forgot how many states but on a good day you could see quite a few, plus the road leading up to the resort is a fun drive!!!

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
Beautiful stuff, Eric. You have a pretty good eye for photographs, too. Incidentally, I don't know if there are any pictures including the 'Burb, but it was at Crater Lake in about '97 or so. 20 years later, who knew paths would cross like they have.

Re: 72 Super Roadtrip-Coast to Coast
Thank you sir. Definitely one of the best threads I've read.
Can't wait 'til my son gets a bit older. What you did the last three weeks is exactly what I have in my mind. Either here in Europe or in North America. Unbelievably more valuable/memorable than any $5000 tourist trip to some upper level resort with John Q. Public. Just take your time. Your time. And life is good. |
