Re: Another Blue Chevy

Took the truck to Cars and Coffee yesterday. Only had 4 cars show , or should I say 3 pickups and 1 car. Not surprised since it was Easter Sunday.

Re: Another Blue Chevy

Had the truck at our usual Tuesday Cruiseday and we had a friend set up a tent to do pinstriping. He did our truck . I thought I got a better picture. I guess I'll get a better one tomorrow.

Today I put my bed side boards and tailgate back on and added a new metal sign I picked up at Hobby Lobby.

Re: Another Blue Chevy

Well I went down the rabbit hole. I tried my hand at AI after looking at this thread https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=858605 It came up with this AI picture designed from the picture I submitted after I asked for a Hotwheels blister pack with my truck displayed. It's a pretty close copy.

Re: Another Blue Chevy

On May 31st the rear wheels locked up and I had to bring the truck home on a roll back After a couple days of trying to chase down the problem I opened the rear axle to find a nasty looking mess in the bottom of the housing. Obvious that the pinion bearings were shot and I began the tear down. Things looked pretty bad and it was looking like a bomb went off.

Re: Another Blue Chevy

In my search for parts I found out that the carrier and cover gaskets as well as the wheel bearings and seals are the same from 1933 to 1963. So those parts were easy to find. The torque tube bushings, pinion bearings, lock collar and lock nut were new old stock I found on eBay.

Re: Another Blue Chevy

Great that you found the parts still available.

There are some old Model A and Model T stuff up the barn.

They had a snout on that rear axle also.

Re: Another Blue Chevy

I was told by quite a few guys to update with an open driveshaft but with mechanical brakes that would lead to a snowball effect with all the other needed changes. I'm trying to keep her as stock as posible for as long as I can.

Post Torque Tube Final Drives

Ouch, that didn't happen in a vacuum, I can only imagine how noisy it's been for a while now .

Been there and done that, I be I still have a spare 4.11 torque tube in the weeds out back for my long gone '46 3100 .

I hope you're using magnets on the drain & fill plugs ? .

I do both and I change the gear oil once a year, it's amazing the SWARF that collects the first few times .

The filler plug magnet gathers very fine SWARF , the drain plug's magnet gathers the larger stuff .

Sad to see such low participation at the shows .

I love the "Super Service" signs .

Not knowing which noise was normal and where certain noises were coming from I worried alot about another transmission issue or throwout bearing and Ujoint problems. Apparently noise was travelling up the torque tube. It made enough noise the morning of the breakdown that warned me that I needed to get home. I just didn't make it.
I do have a magnet laying in the rear diff now. There is no drain plug.
The carshow picture I took was after more than 1/2 the participants had left.
The "signs" match the paint perfect.

Post Final Drive Failure

Understood and agreed, I had similar issues with my old '46 3100, I was SURE the tranny was failing so I found and installed an N.O.S. one, it shifted much better but the awful noises continued until I found and installed and torque tube assembly .

My comments were because it obvious this thing wasn't serviced for a long, long time .

The brown color of the oil and parts residue plus the visible pitting of the ring and pinion gears indicate there was water in there and insufficient gar oil to boot .

As I so often say "oil is the cheapest Mechanic", I change every lubricant in every vehicle at least once a year .

This along with the small rare earth magnets I use on both fill and drain plugs, warn you long in advance of repairs needed .

I'm curious as to how much noise (whining, howling etc.) it now makes .

Re: Another Blue Chevy

I'll admit I've never changed the gear oil in the rear, although it was full. It now has very little noise for a 90 year old truck.

Re: Another Blue Chevy

This Reminds Me Of

Warning Old man story below.

There was a Guy that lived a Mile up the road from me in my younger years that had a 1976 Chevy K20.

We went to school together (Of Course)
He was a couple of years older than me.

It had 31" Mud tires on it.

The mechanic that worked on his truck rented the shop in front of the house I was raised in.

Here's were the story starts.

The Suspected tire Roar seem to get Louder as time went by.

My Freshman year I asked Junior (His Mechanic) Are those Tires really making that much Noise?

Well, a Couple years went by, and the truck was towed to Junior's.

The Rear End Locked up in it.

Junior asked him a simple question.

When is the last time you checked the fluid in the rear axle?

He said (Well it started leaking around the rear u-joint a little bit over the past couple of years, but it Quit leaking several months ago).

After seeing that I do not know how it lasted as long as it did.
He did not drive it far at a Time though.

I don't drive the '35 very far either. We live about 6-8 miles from where ever I may be going in a single trip and only take it out 1-2 times a week. I bet I've only put 4500 miles on it in the 5 years we have had it.
