Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I put some much needed new rubber on the 'ol girl (Goodyear LT245 75/R16 E1) and the rear shocks (KYB Monomax) that my wife bought me for my birthday last year. She rides sooo much better now!

I neglected to get a pic, but I hauled about a half dozen 12' long 2x10's and 75 feet of garden fence...she rode on the overloads & got the job done like a champ!

"Dirty Laundry Time", Mud.

For the first time in "I don't know how long", I jacked up RAT and attended to some needed stuff.

That expen$ive battery now seems to be about five years old. Won't take a charge.

"Off with your head!"
Should have kept the trickle charger on it.

I scoped out a starving problem a long time ago and bought a better Carter electric fuel pump.
It's been sitting on the top of my tool box for XXXXX months..

Battery's out and will be transplanted tomorrow.

Starter's toast. Ordered a new mini. Should be here in a couple of days with some brass pump
fittings and a couple of electric push-on connectors for the terminals on the Carter (must'a lost 'em).

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I've had my truck, 68 step side, for nearly a year. I recently found a frame to build so I can keep the truck together for the time being.
I degreased the frame today. I hope to prime and paint it this week.

I hauled the passenger front outer fender back to the painter so he could hit the insides he couldn't spray with some POR 15-like anti-rust paint.

Slowly, slowly.......she is getting done.

One day, I want to do the same thing with my truck's frame. Totally degrease, derust, and clean it up, epoxy prime it, and follow up with some hard core anti rust paint.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

The 72' finally got towed to body and paint.

Been in deconstruction mode the last couple of weeks.
I learned alot about the inner works of our C10's by tearing down the truck.
Been taking photos of everything, bagging/tagging, cleaning/polishing and refurbishing as many of the original parts possible.
Engine and all underhood components will be pulled for paint and detail also.
Alot of fun work ahead.

Ugg!!!

Installed the new fuel pump: No issue.
Installed the new battery: Broken positive post. No problem. Had a couple of extras.

Installed the new starter: Started right up. The first click.

PROBLEM: Didn't need a starter. Fot the first round, the starter must have mated with some
GOOD teeth on the flex plate. The grinding I was hearing was a bunch of bad teeth on the
flex plate. That's what she does now...grind.

FIX: Guess I'll have to take out the tranny.

I traced a trickle oil leak to the rear main seal. Never changed one of those before.
Should have, I guess. I'll read up on it.

If anyone has any suggestions re: flex plate purchase, I'd love to hear it.

PROBLEM 2: Haven't been able to ever get a totally dry Turbo 350 trans. Always has leaked.
Too much. All the usual suspects addressed (pan gasket, speedo gear seal, cooler hose fittings,
o-ring at the filler pipe.... PLUS took it in to a tranny shop earlier for seals and a general "going over").
Still leaks. This one bums me. But, what the Hell. It ain't cancer. I'll get it.

Thinking of taking RAT to a shop. Rat's never seen a shop before. But I'm getting old.

Before you yank the tranny, google ' chevy starter shimming ' and check / adjust that .

Thanks, Nate.

I tried with 0-1-2 shims provided.
I took your advice and watched some YouTubes, read more than a dozen articles.

I bought another shim set which is on it's way, a remote switch so I can lay under and watch "the action",
and I'll watch and measure the run-out on the f-plate.

Also, the torque on the starter bolts calls for 35fp. I'm pretty sure I had that, but I didn't measure it with my torque wrench.

Quite a few of the flex plate's teeth are gouged ...but only about 1/16" to 1/8" in from the point of the initial impact of the bendix gear.
I'll check the (up and down) engagement clearance...they say a paper clip works for the feeler gauge....so the beat goes on.

I bet I had some movement in the other starter that fubarred the flex plate. At one point my timing was advanced too far and I had that
"kickback on ignition". That can't be good for it. But, that was for a very few starts. Still..

The set up worked for (light use) several years before it started grinding. And, Bad Boy Magwa, as long as it caught without it sounding
like steel marbles in a blender more than a couple of seconds, I waited. Too long.

I'd rather just be wiping RAT off. Rather than crawling under her.
